I've always loved the music in darkest dungeon, it's spectacular - but going through youtube, listening to various soundtracks, I only just realized you're *also* the composer of the Prince of Persia music!! Incredible damn job, man, probably makes you my all-time favourite composer. Damn good quality of work, spanning from then to now!
I have a d&d character who is tied to a place called Calimshan. I hope thats spelled correctly. But that place reminds me or prince of persia. Man! Aww the memories.

I had to retreat and Dismas chose to stay and hold them off resulting in his death. He didn't die horribly by the eldritch or the beasts. He died protecting the hamlet, our home.
I like to imagen that all the shop keepers, service providers, and everyone in my roster is fighting their own battles somewhere desperatly defending the Hamlet as best they can, I also like the symbolism of you, your party, and others offscrean fighting Vulf and his brigands in the town square under the watchful eye of The Ancestor. Loved this mission.

Darkest Dungeon wouldn't be half the game it is without the amazing narrator and soundtrack. I hope there's some new areas and encounters down the line just so we can hear more great music.
The animal they named themselves after is fitting. The curs and brigands are miserable little creatures, their biggest strength being sheer numbers. Prove superior strength and the survivors will flee with their tails between their legs.
When I heard this song for the first time, I remember thinking, "This town is a shithole, BUT IT'S MY SHITHOLE DAMMIT SO GET OFF MY LAWN YOU ANIMALS!!!" *edit* one of the songs that makes you feel like an actual hero. Fantastic job, looking forward to more music in the next game.
That's how I pictured this whole event playing out, badass walk coupled with fire-forged true companions and all (mostly). Oh, and sending Vvulf landing on top of all his bombs taking him down in one big-ass BOOM! Bonus points if Vvulf voluntarily throws himself onto the bombs himself while his goons are nearby.
The brigands are swarming everywhere, looting every house, barrel, and building they come across. The townspeople have fled over the hills, praying that they will have a home to come back to once the smoke abides. The brigands are cheerful, thinking that they are wolves descending on lambs. But suddenly, the cheers turn into shouts of confusion and pain. Out of an alley steps a masked man, in a fools hat and garbs, his bells jingling with every step. He stares down the overwhelmed brigands. One of them dash towards the man, swinging his sword. The masked figure deftly leaps to the side, and from his garbs comes a viciously curved sickle - he swings it at blinding speed, gashing the brigand, causing blood to sputter over the street. The screams of pain induces a soft chuckle behind his mask. The brigands, too shocked by what they just saw to move, finally attacks, but suddenly, a dagger whizzes through the air from the shadows - lodging itself into a musketeer, the brigand slumps over with gargling sounds. Two more daggers finds two more throats, as a pale lady in a long hat and blue, simple robes steps out of the dark. She easily sidesteps a sword thrusting for her, then draws a pickaxe from her back - she steps away from another swing, then brings the pickaxe around to bury it in the heart of her attacker. The brigands are rallying to meet the counterattack, but without warning, tentacles appear seemingly out of nowhere, gripping the legs of several bandits. As they struggle to get free, a globe of glass whizzes through the air and shatters next to them, spreading a corrosive acid. Their screams die on their lips as their expressions of fear melts away with the rest of their bodies. The bandits are converging. In a corner of the street, they see a woman in an armored nun's robe, holding her battle mace high - flares of light seems to focus and shift as injuries on the towns defenders close themselves. She is cornered by the brigands and their bloodhounds, but from an alleyway, a massive man in full armor emerges, wielding a terrifying mace and a broad shield. They break off to attack him, but he blocks their every attack and forces his way through them to their quarry. As a lumbering taskmaster swings his whip, it is met by the thud of metal - before he can recuperate, the man in armor swings his mace and it meets his head with terrifying force - THE GROUND QUAKES! As the bandit tries to recover, a figure taps his shoulder from behind, and the smell of gunpowder and the sound of a burning fuse is the last thing he knows, as a pistol fires straight into his brain. The highwayman have joined the fray. The brigands realize that they cannot win, and are retreating in force - but their retreat is cut off by a terrifying sight. A man clad in metal, and a terrifying mask, red with brigand blood. He swings a massive greatsword, easily cleaving two brigands in twain with force of impact that sends the brigands reeling - A DEVASTATING BLOW! They have nowhere to run now. The defenders encircle them, and as the swordsmen form up to defend their musketeers, they suddenly start falling. The bandits spin around to see a barbaric-looking woman in a long fur coat, moving at impossible speed, cutting them up with a long, terrifying glaive - she spins around, faces the bandits, and lets lose a battlecry so terrible that it completely dazes the brigands - AAAHKLORAAAH!!! As she cuts into them together with the other defenders, a terrible voice bellows, commanding the bandits to stand their ground. The bandits leader have entered the scene, bringing with him a great shield and a gigantic barrel of bombs. As the brigands form up behind him, the town defenders does the same, both sides preparing for a final battle...

A smile spreads across the bandit leader's face as he lights his first bomb. Throwing it, the infernal weapon detonates upon impact, shuddering the few buildings that are still standing, throwing up a cloud of earth, broken wood, and the blood of the fallen that momentarily obscures the vision of all on the battlefield. The defenders of the town scatter as more bombs rain upon them, the brigand leader letting loose a deep, sadistic laugh. Under the cover of his fire, the brigands under his command renew their assault. Among the defenders, the man with the shield and mace takes point, defending against the barrage of incendiary destruction. The highwayman and the woman with the daggers stand back to back, knife-fighting the brigands who dare to get too close. The fool and the barbarian team together, their blades parting flesh from bone and drawing inordinate levels of blood with every strike. The greatsword wielder cleaves brigands from side to side and up to down, the one with the plague mask lobbing globes of infectious gases that burn the skin and melt the bones of her enemies. However, the brigands are many and the defenders are few, and though the priestess and the occultist use their magicks to cure even the most grievous of wounds, they cannot staunch the flow of their allies' blood forever. As wounds mount, the brigands, like wolves after their prey, sense fear in their enemies and press their advantage. As all seems lost and the brigand leader readies another bomb, the cry of a hound echoes through the shattered remains of the Hamlet. As all turn their heads to see what the source of this noise is, they see on the far side of the town square a man clad in a gendarme's uniform and holding the leash of a snarling wolfhound. Next to him is a man in leather and scale armour, in one hand a hatchet, a grappling hook in the other, and stun grenades attached to his belt. On his left is a woman of African descent, clad in metal armour and holding a loaded crossbow before her. Closer to the heroes appears a man in crusader's armour. He produces a long piece of parchment and, calling out the brigand leader's name of Vvulf, reads his many crimes aloud before rolling up the parchment, unsheathing a great broadsword, and holding it in a ready position. Seeing this, Vvulf laughs long and richly, followed by a mocking question of if this is all the defenders have. As he says this, the sound of rattling chains is heard in the square. On the right of the square is a sickly man with an "A" branded on his forehead and heavy iron manacles wrapped across his body. Vvulf and is brigands are incredulous upon seeing this. Vvulf demands to know if they have gone mad thinking that this pathetic excuse of a man is going to save them. Suddenly, the veins on the sickly man's wrists glow with a poisoned green colour. It spreads to his arms and legs, then his neck, then his head. His pupils obtain the same colour, the rest of the eye turning black as coal with lightning-streaks of bright red shooting in every direction. The manacles that once weighed the man down now clatter, strain, and shatter. His skin turns a dark burgundy and spiraling black goat-horns, immense demonic claws, and long sword-esque teeth sprout from his head, fingertips, and mouth, and his size and bodily mass increases to thrice its normality. The brigands are now staring at a monster, an abomination, poison dripping from its elongated jaws and murder in its soulless eyes. Vvulf, now more satisfied with the sight before his eyes, lets loose a mighty battle cry before lighting the bomb in his hand. The abomination responds with an animalistic roar the likes of which only a monster of his ferocity and lethality could produce. Vvulf lobbs his bomb at the abomination, who merely swats it aside. Lettling loose another roar, the abomination opens into a gallop, poison sliding off his bladelike teeth, massive claws throwing up dirt with each stride, and his soulless eyes locking on Vvulf. As this happened, the bounty hunter throws his grenades at the brigands, which detonate with a blinding flash. With their enemies momentarily disoriented, all the defenders present launch a counter-offensive, striking at the brigands with renewed vigor. The battle has begun once more.
Send these vermin a message; the rightful owner has returned and their kind is no longer welcome. - This game and music are inspiring. keep up the fantastic work!
I love how the most difficult enemy in the game is just a man.. compared to the myriad of horrors your party has faced, the countless number of undead and abhorrent monstrosities.. And yet here you stand, in the face of oblivion. Not at the steps of Hell nor at the precipice of darkness.. but in your very own town. Your safe haven. Not even the terrors would dare launch such a heinous and, should I say, daring raid? You've all forgotten who you are. Men and women with human souls, human wills. These are your strengths. You have ironed them on the pain of failure, the agonizing madness that has made you more powerful than any Eldritch relic could ever make you.. You face that ten-fold now, in the form of just a man. A man with a will, a man with a purpose.. if even so simple.. *To destroy everything you hold dear. To end your quest. That is the harbinger of your demise.. a man named Vvulf.*
this is probably my favorite song in the game for three simple reasons 1. it sounds desperate and gives the player the feeling that if the player cant even defend their own home then how can they even hope on taking on the darkest dungeon. 2. it starts with a really sad tone as the destruction around the hamlet is shown in game then it ramps up filling the player with a need with revenge for the destruction caused by these monsters. 3. the song has a multiple of different tones like i said its starts of sad then it sounds desperate then angry and hateful and finally a combo of the four as it just keeps building right until you fight the boss behind this mayhem and the last 2 minutes play as the player makes his final stand to defend his home i love this soundtrack all together and i'm always thrilled to hear more music from Stuart Chatwood
Thanks for the detailed review. This is one of my favourite tracks in the game as well. I'm very glad to hear people are enjoying it as much as I enjoyed making it.
I've always wondered how it would work out if more than four heroes could be sent on one quest, especially with the Vvulf bandit invasion. Shouldn't *all* the heroes be involved in defending their home? That would be a truly epic battle. Maybe it would be like the Vvulf in his summoning of endless bandits, where if one of your heroes suffers a deathblow, you can choose another hero to take the fallen's place.
I like to think that during this quest most of your heroes defends the Hamlet, but a group of the most qualified ones must stop Vvulf himself. I know there is no sign about it, and it's just my opinion.
@@xxzmaster04xx29 Also since there's no casualties among your heroes other than the 4 who take on Vvulf, one can imagine that your group of 4 are taking on the most dangerous concentration of bandits leading up to Vvulf while the others are fighting lesser battles elsewhere against weaker and less-organized brigands without Vvulf's direct orders. Meanwhile the ones you fight are highly loyal and motivated to defend the man who has led them to survive against the horrors of the estate

@@PxHDB The way I see it, the characters would focus more on cutting down any raider they see than focus on the safety of the commonfolk. They rally in defense since these brigands have the gall to attack the only relative safe haven in the Estate, but they're not out to save anyone.
"Hey guys, I know you slaughtered three Necromancers, two Swine Kings, three Hags and completed two stages of the Darkest Dungeon but kek I've got the highest crit in the game and broken-ass damage with my bombs. Oh yeah, did I mention my fucking barrel *parries* attacks? Neat, huh?"
Thankfully it only parries for 6 damage and can easily be taken out by a Houndmaster and have the damage healed by an Occultist whilst your Abomination and Hellion go to town on the Vvulf.
As if the prophet doesn't have broken damage. Take a man at arms. Buffed he takes GREATLY reduced damage with defender, and he can "catch" the bombs that the Vvulf sends out, unlike the prophet where you're guaranteed to have at least one death's door on most heroes.
i took your advice and went for the barrel. it was a terrible idea. even if you can deal 25 dmg to it each turn Vuulf just resummons it straight away.Thanks for getting dismas killed for the 2nd time buddy, i shouldve listened to darkfury45 :(

When they started, my group contained a Vestal, a Houndmaster, a Bounty Hunter and a Leper. The Bounty Hunter was the first to die, suffering a critical explosion and bleeding to death when it was his turn. The same fate awaited my Vestal. And with noone to heal his wounds, the Leper did soon join them. Now all that was left was a critically wounded Houndmaster, standing at deaths door, expecting to soon be another entry in the graveyards index, while Vvulf sat at 5hp. But he resisted. And then he resisted his minions. Then it was his turn, his last chance - and he delivered the critical blow. He and the bestest of doggos is my favorite character since that moment.

Once, I used this track in a D&D game I ran. The fight took place inside a clock tower, and so the clangorous bells signaled the moment where the disused gears and sprockets creaked breaths of life. This is the only track I’ve found that has bells in a combat-themed piece.
A bright glow looms over the horizon. Turbulent war cries bellow in the distance. The whiff of sulfer, ash, and blood hangs uneasily in the air. The wolves are at the door.
So i just tried to complete this quest, and failed, here's the story -oh damn a quest town event how cool! -ok got a nice team setup let's go -man this music is awesome -briganders appear -wins -man that fight was easy -next fight -ok these guys look new, with their masks and wolf fur -ok they were a bit tough but nothing i couldn't handle -next fight... -a madman and some tough enemies, oh well, can't be that bad -ok so my vestal is stressed out but all is well -another fight -another madman? what is going on? -well, now my entire team is stressed -get ancestor's bag -good stuff -yet another fight -ok so now my entire team is afflicted that's nice -ok so now 2 of my party members died of a heartattack -fuck this im out -houndmaster dies to ensure retreat -what a great soundtrack -cries
This game is difficult. Sometimes the dice roll does not go in your favour. I've been there myself where you must make a hasty retreat. Hope you have better luck next attempt. At least you get to hear the music again..:)
My Bountyhunter almost died while protectong the Town, i swear to god, if i hasen't have found the ancestor's coat, he would have died, i swear, he dodged the explosión of the bombs twice
This song brings tears to my eyes. Hearing this as an army of bandits charge at your hamlet, and all of your adventurers stand ready to face them. They fought gods and monsters and they will not let their home get taken away from them without a fight. Pure genius, well done.

The first time I fought Vulf, three of my four people died and one escaped. I was awfully pissed, and I sweared to avenge my friends. Among the fallen was my original Highwayman that the game starts you off with. Many ingame weeks later after I had gotten much stronger, Vulf attacked the town again. The party I had this time included my original Crusader that the game started me off with. It was an awfully close fight with my Lepar dieing and with my other three characters all being on death's door, but my original Crusader avenged my original Highwayman when he got the killing blow! It was the most amazing non-scripted event I've ever seen in a videogame!
"Dismas my friend, can you hear me? DO YOU SEE THIS? The bastards have finally been driven from our door!" The original Highwayman is named Dismas and the original crusader is named Reynauld.
I want a full fan fic about this. Tomorrow. There's a series, I forget exactly what its called, but it's basically a series of diaries that someone made for XCOM back in Enemy Unknown days and I WANT THAT FOR THIS.
This song was the inspiration of my first DnD character. Just some farm boy seeing the village he once called home burning around him. Decides to join a local Militia, then worked his way up the ranks. Quite a few similarities with the Man-at-Arms. I love this game

I remember using this as the final battle theme in a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, wherein the cult of demon worshippers the party had fought the whole game attacked the player characters' home town and they returned to find it under attck. A hard battle was ended with the now ascended cult leader recieving a flaming greatsword through the chest, courtesy of the fighter chucking it at him in a last ditch effort. He crit and the leader died, with every player character close to death. It was amazing. I love Darkest Dungeon and my proverbial hat goes off to the amazing composition of its music.
I still can’t get over how adding a percussion line, changing the rhythm, and quickening the melody is all it takes to make such an evocative piece. “Masterfully executed!” Edit: Oh damn, I just noticed the Jester’s casual lute strumming in the piece.

For me, no matter how good the gameplay, story, or anything else is, the music is what creates the experience. And tracks like this make Darkest Dungeon a true masterpiece.
Found out about this game when I was searching for music for a tabletop rpg session. Music blew me away, and I looked up the game and bought it shortly thereafter. Mr Chatwood, your music is what sold at least one copy of this game. Everything else was just icing on the cake.
Since yesterday when Vvulf attacked my village, my whole family has been listening to this song. Sounds like an anthem to defend one's home. Beautifull song. A true masterpiece✌️
"There can be no hope in this place. No hope..." Watching my entire party go mad because I hadn't anticipated the madmen who told them all their sins, this music blaring in the background... I had lost people before, but this was the first time in Darkest Dungeon I felt truly AFRAID. This was our home. Our haven. The dangers were out there, not in here, yet here they stood before us! And my stalwart guardians, who had held fast and kept the darkness at bay; Yet now, amidst the fire and the despair, they lost themselves. A Highwayman who could only see his burning home staring back, a Gravedigger who simply went mad, a Helion who's battle rage left her behind to halt the advance - and naught but a Valorous Vestal to try and keep their flesh together through it all until the retreat was called. Now we've seen our home in flames, the best of us fall not to monsters, but to men. Once the fires of our buildings are doused, the fires of our vengeance will burn threefold. Stuart, this piece of music is absolutely astounding. This experience would have been so reduced without you, as would have so many moments in this game.
You know, seeing all the classes lined up really puts into perspective what an army we had in our town. It's not just a few hyperconpetent people, it was a whole platoon of them.
Still in love with the tracks after 8 years... The gaming experience would not be the same without Your masterpieces and they're the reason I come back over and over. Thank You for Your wonderful work.
After all these years... I have finally found an incomparable piece of musical perfection. Every single track in this game is so good it's not measured by known numbers. Thank you, Red Hook, for bringing the world one of the greatest RPGs ever created and thank you, Mr. Chatwood, for putting your heart and soul into making it more alive than it could be without you.
A clash between a team of mercenaries and volunteers that spent their time fighting unimaginable horrors on a mission to clear out the corruption and a group of brigands organized like a small army that bonded over pillaging the countryside and wreaking havoc unopposed, two entirely different forces that grew under different circumstances, largely unfamiliar to one another, but nonetheless equally savage. Interesting how, while the most of the game focuses on dealing with the forces of madmen, cultists, terrifying and unknown unholy and Eldritch powers, with the atmosphere of hopelessness and stagnation prevailing, the fight against brigands, being the case of known evil, is probably the most spirited and rousing to action. Especially knowing what comes at the end, it gives the impression that the heroes go "we don't even know what we're after in this life anymore, but these thugs piss me off just enough to give me a purpose"
This...is a pure masterpiece, it shows how much your battle depends on the hamlet, to save it from the brigands. I can't say how much this is art. I hope you will make more content and music from others game.
Vvulf: Let's attack a hamlet full of highly trained mercenaries that are capable of taking down the most vicious eldritch horrors in the land, what could possibly go wrong?
I still think there should have been more town attack events. It would have given the impression that the longer you take, the more dangerous your enemies become. You make constant incursions to enemy territory, but only Vvulf and the Shrieker really go after you specifically.
Not even the Shrieker knowingly attacks you, it just steals Trinkets because they’re shiny and because it’s pretty much still a crow under the eldritch corruption.
@@PRubin-rh4sr Not necessarily a huge organized invasion, just events where the town itself is in danger. Like maybe after coming back from the Weald a fungal outbreak happens and you need to repel it. Or the Swine emerge from a well or something connected to the sewer system they're in. Perhaps a necromancer could sneak into town and use your cemetery against you in reviving dead heroes as enemies.

Didn't remember this song was such a banger, the feeling of fear abd heroism at the same time with Vulf, Dismas almost dying with the bomb, and Reynauld clutching the fight with crits, love it!
Just yesterday I finally won a campaign, the first time in 3 years of playing Darkest Dungeon. The catharsis gained was indescribable. And that feeling of long-elusive, finally-grasped success somehow enchances the feeling from the entire game and the music. Now, listening to this, I think of the events associated with the music as the memories of the war fought long ago. Not in the way of cherishing the bloodshed, but by honoring the perseverance of those, who fought, who fell, who remained, who absconded never to return, and for those, like me, who kept returning, persisting, untill the end. Thank You, Stuart. This game was, and still will be one of the greatest expiriences in my life, and Your hardwork is an important piece of the whole picture of this story, wich I, after all those years, finally got through.

Man when I played against Vvulf and his men, I just felt that this was home, but it was being threatened. This track suited the mission so well. You're home, but it's dying. Flee, and it burns to the ground. Fight, and you risk death. It's a lose-lose situation, so have at them and show these low lives their lowly position! The music in Darkest Dungeon is absolutely stellar work, full props to you Stuart, and everyone else behind the scenes of this game. :)
this song hits so hard. I've been listening to this while working for years and it never gets boring. This one and Warrens Ambush are my favorites. The only song I believe to be on the same level from another game's OST is "The City Must Survive" from Frostpunk
This is like cinematic worthy music. Theres just a way that you feel immersed by the music and the theme all around in which the scenario develops. Somehow you feel attached to your characters and feel the adrenaline of fighting for survival, but its the soundtrack that makes the game shine, its magnificent.
I love this track! Gotta be my favorite one from the game. I actually used it as the grand finale in one of my D&D campaigns. They had to escape a huge city with the guard and government agents in pursuit. I set the scene with all the belfries ringing to alert the city, just like how the song starts. I love the start of that song so much.
Honestly the soundtrack of DD is fantastic, but after so many hours of playing it got a bit repetetive. But when I played the "wolves at the door" quest I literally got goosebumps from this song. Fantastic work!

I imagine that the four members of the squad sent to kill the bandit leader are like a strike team, while the rest of the mercs are defending the buildings of the hamlet. (The more religious ones would defend the church, while the more militant would defend the training grounds.) Also, this song is the perfect “GET THE FUCK OFF MY LAWN!” kind of song.

I like to think of this song anytime I go to The Sprawl in Darkest Dungeon 2. Sorta fits the same theme of a Town in Chaos, only now the Heroes are just passing through and clearing what remains. Still fantastic as it was 7 years ago.
I am dming a curse of strahd campaign and i had the pleasure of running the "feast" for my PC"s , this was my background music and it fit perfectly . The tension , the panic , the chaos its all there . They were all on edge the entire time . Great song and i cant wait to find somewhere else i can use this at !
So, someone here was talking about how they want a dnd session in this setting. Meanwhile, I’m over here running an *entire campaign* based in the hamlet called Stygian. Yes, I’m taking some liberties, yes, the tone is different from Darkest Dungeon, and yes, your score, Mr. Chatwood, is behind most, if not all, of the sessions. It’s only two people I’m running it for, but the characters are excellent, and it’s the best campaign I’ve had to date. If interest is shown, I could shed some light, but I don’t feel like transcribing everything about it. Regardless, thanks, Mr. Chatwood, for really setting the tone for the campaign. Your work really brings the Hamlet to life in a tabletop setting.
I recently finished this quest with a leper, man-at-arms, jester, and vestal. My leper was only level 5 and the rest of my heroes was level 4. I could of brought the other heroes but some of them were either stressed out, or wasn’t compatible. In one of the fights. My heroes were all stressed out. My Leper hit a 100 stress, and out of the blue - becomes STALWART. It was one of my best moments, and that’s not all. The start of the Vvulf fight I hit 3-4 crits in a row that leper hit over 30-50 damage. Man, what a clutch, and I got all the trinkets in that level. The game is fun.

I had to retreat and Dismas chose to stay and hold them off resulting in his death. He didn't die horribly by the eldritch or the beasts. He died protecting the hamlet, our home.
Same here...but my ass forgot that was a "Reynauld & Dismas" Run.... and I said "Fucking luck...."
I like to imagen that all the shop keepers, service providers, and everyone in my roster is fighting their own battles somewhere desperatly defending the Hamlet as best they can, I also like the symbolism of you, your party, and others offscrean fighting Vulf and his brigands in the town square under the watchful eye of The Ancestor. Loved this mission.

The animal they named themselves after is fitting. The curs and brigands are miserable little creatures, their biggest strength being sheer numbers. Prove superior strength and the survivors will flee with their tails between their legs.
When I heard this song for the first time, I remember thinking,
"This town is a shithole, BUT IT'S MY SHITHOLE DAMMIT SO GET OFF MY LAWN YOU ANIMALS!!!"

By the time you've encountered Vvulf, wouldn't it be half-restored to its former glory?
That's how I pictured this whole event playing out, badass walk coupled with fire-forged true companions and all (mostly).
Oh, and sending Vvulf landing on top of all his bombs taking him down in one big-ass BOOM! Bonus points if Vvulf voluntarily throws himself onto the bombs himself while his goons are nearby.

I love how one of the best people you can bring to this area the MaA is a general that can guard and give orders like Vulf honestly pretty poetic
The brigands are swarming everywhere, looting every house, barrel, and building they come across.
The townspeople have fled over the hills, praying that they will have a home to come back to once the smoke abides.
The brigands are cheerful, thinking that they are wolves descending on lambs. But suddenly, the cheers turn into shouts of confusion and pain. Out of an alley steps a masked man, in a fools hat and garbs, his bells jingling with every step. He stares down the overwhelmed brigands. One of them dash towards the man, swinging his sword. The masked figure deftly leaps to the side, and from his garbs comes a viciously curved sickle - he swings it at blinding speed, gashing the brigand, causing blood to sputter over the street. The screams of pain induces a soft chuckle behind his mask.
The brigands, too shocked by what they just saw to move, finally attacks, but suddenly, a dagger whizzes through the air from the shadows - lodging itself into a musketeer, the brigand slumps over with gargling sounds. Two more daggers finds two more throats, as a pale lady in a long hat and blue, simple robes steps out of the dark. She easily sidesteps a sword thrusting for her, then draws a pickaxe from her back - she steps away from another swing, then brings the pickaxe around to bury it in the heart of her attacker.
The brigands are rallying to meet the counterattack, but without warning, tentacles appear seemingly out of nowhere, gripping the legs of several bandits. As they struggle to get free, a globe of glass whizzes through the air and shatters next to them, spreading a corrosive acid. Their screams die on their lips as their expressions of fear melts away with the rest of their bodies.
The bandits are converging. In a corner of the street, they see a woman in an armored nun's robe, holding her battle mace high - flares of light seems to focus and shift as injuries on the towns defenders close themselves. She is cornered by the brigands and their bloodhounds, but from an alleyway, a massive man in full armor emerges, wielding a terrifying mace and a broad shield.
They break off to attack him, but he blocks their every attack and forces his way through them to their quarry. As a lumbering taskmaster swings his whip, it is met by the thud of metal - before he can recuperate, the man in armor swings his mace and it meets his head with terrifying force - THE GROUND QUAKES! As the bandit tries to recover, a figure taps his shoulder from behind, and the smell of gunpowder and the sound of a burning fuse is the last thing he knows, as a pistol fires straight into his brain. The highwayman have joined the fray.
The brigands realize that they cannot win, and are retreating in force - but their retreat is cut off by a terrifying sight. A man clad in metal, and a terrifying mask, red with brigand blood. He swings a massive greatsword, easily cleaving two brigands in twain with force of impact that sends the brigands reeling - A DEVASTATING BLOW!
They have nowhere to run now. The defenders encircle them, and as the swordsmen form up to defend their musketeers, they suddenly start falling. The bandits spin around to see a barbaric-looking woman in a long fur coat, moving at impossible speed, cutting them up with a long, terrifying glaive - she spins around, faces the bandits, and lets lose a battlecry so terrible that it completely dazes the brigands - AAAHKLORAAAH!!! As she cuts into them together with the other defenders, a terrible voice bellows, commanding the bandits to stand their ground. The bandits leader have entered the scene, bringing with him a great shield and a gigantic barrel of bombs. As the brigands form up behind him, the town defenders does the same, both sides preparing for a final battle...

A smile spreads across the bandit leader's face as he lights his first bomb. Throwing it, the infernal weapon detonates upon impact, shuddering the few buildings that are still standing, throwing up a cloud of earth, broken wood, and the blood of the fallen that momentarily obscures the vision of all on the battlefield. The defenders of the town scatter as more bombs rain upon them, the brigand leader letting loose a deep, sadistic laugh.
Under the cover of his fire, the brigands under his command renew their assault. Among the defenders, the man with the shield and mace takes point, defending against the barrage of incendiary destruction. The highwayman and the woman with the daggers stand back to back, knife-fighting the brigands who dare to get too close. The fool and the barbarian team together, their blades parting flesh from bone and drawing inordinate levels of blood with every strike. The greatsword wielder cleaves brigands from side to side and up to down, the one with the plague mask lobbing globes of infectious gases that burn the skin and melt the bones of her enemies. However, the brigands are many and the defenders are few, and though the priestess and the occultist use their magicks to cure even the most grievous of wounds, they cannot staunch the flow of their allies' blood forever. As wounds mount, the brigands, like wolves after their prey, sense fear in their enemies and press their advantage.
As all seems lost and the brigand leader readies another bomb, the cry of a hound echoes through the shattered remains of the Hamlet. As all turn their heads to see what the source of this noise is, they see on the far side of the town square a man clad in a gendarme's uniform and holding the leash of a snarling wolfhound. Next to him is a man in leather and scale armour, in one hand a hatchet, a grappling hook in the other, and stun grenades attached to his belt. On his left is a woman of African descent, clad in metal armour and holding a loaded crossbow before her. Closer to the heroes appears a man in crusader's armour. He produces a long piece of parchment and, calling out the brigand leader's name of Vvulf, reads his many crimes aloud before rolling up the parchment, unsheathing a great broadsword, and holding it in a ready position. Seeing this, Vvulf laughs long and richly, followed by a mocking question of if this is all the defenders have.
As he says this, the sound of rattling chains is heard in the square. On the right of the square is a sickly man with an "A" branded on his forehead and heavy iron manacles wrapped across his body. Vvulf and is brigands are incredulous upon seeing this. Vvulf demands to know if they have gone mad thinking that this pathetic excuse of a man is going to save them. Suddenly, the veins on the sickly man's wrists glow with a poisoned green colour. It spreads to his arms and legs, then his neck, then his head.
His pupils obtain the same colour, the rest of the eye turning black as coal with lightning-streaks of bright red shooting in every direction. The manacles that once weighed the man down now clatter, strain, and shatter. His skin turns a dark burgundy and spiraling black goat-horns, immense demonic claws, and long sword-esque teeth sprout from his head, fingertips, and mouth, and his size and bodily mass increases to thrice its normality. The brigands are now staring at a monster, an abomination, poison dripping from its elongated jaws and murder in its soulless eyes.
Vvulf, now more satisfied with the sight before his eyes, lets loose a mighty battle cry before lighting the bomb in his hand. The abomination responds with an animalistic roar the likes of which only a monster of his ferocity and lethality could produce. Vvulf lobbs his bomb at the abomination, who merely swats it aside. Lettling loose another roar, the abomination opens into a gallop, poison sliding off his bladelike teeth, massive claws throwing up dirt with each stride, and his soulless eyes locking on Vvulf. As this happened, the bounty hunter throws his grenades at the brigands, which detonate with a blinding flash. With their enemies momentarily disoriented, all the defenders present launch a counter-offensive, striking at the brigands with renewed vigor.
The battle has begun once more.

I love how the most difficult enemy in the game is just a man.. compared to the myriad of horrors your party has faced, the countless number of undead and abhorrent monstrosities..
And yet here you stand, in the face of oblivion. Not at the steps of Hell nor at the precipice of darkness.. but in your very own town. Your safe haven. Not even the terrors would dare launch such a heinous and, should I say, daring raid?
You've all forgotten who you are. Men and women with human souls, human wills. These are your strengths. You have ironed them on the pain of failure, the agonizing madness that has made you more powerful than any Eldritch relic could ever make you..
You face that ten-fold now, in the form of just a man. A man with a will, a man with a purpose.. if even so simple..
*To destroy everything you hold dear. To end your quest. That is the harbinger of your demise.. a man named Vvulf.*
Moralless men are the worst kind of monsters.
I think Vvulf is the most badass boss of the game, and the combat music is so damn epic ._.

A simple man who killed two of my teams 😭
this is probably my favorite song in the game for three simple reasons
1. it sounds desperate and gives the player the feeling that if the player cant even defend their own home then how can they even hope on taking on the darkest dungeon.
2. it starts with a really sad tone as the destruction around the hamlet is shown in game then it ramps up filling the player with a need with revenge for the destruction caused by these monsters.
3. the song has a multiple of different tones like i said its starts of sad then it sounds desperate then angry and hateful and finally a combo of the four as it just keeps building right until you fight the boss behind this mayhem and the last 2 minutes play as the player makes his final stand to defend his home
i love this soundtrack all together and i'm always thrilled to hear more music from Stuart Chatwood

I've always wondered how it would work out if more than four heroes could be sent on one quest, especially with the Vvulf bandit invasion. Shouldn't *all* the heroes be involved in defending their home? That would be a truly epic battle. Maybe it would be like the Vvulf in his summoning of endless bandits, where if one of your heroes suffers a deathblow, you can choose another hero to take the fallen's place.
I like to think that during this quest most of your heroes defends the Hamlet, but a group of the most qualified ones must stop Vvulf himself. I know there is no sign about it, and it's just my opinion.
@@xxzmaster04xx29 Also since there's no casualties among your heroes other than the 4 who take on Vvulf, one can imagine that your group of 4 are taking on the most dangerous concentration of bandits leading up to Vvulf while the others are fighting lesser battles elsewhere against weaker and less-organized brigands without Vvulf's direct orders. Meanwhile the ones you fight are highly loyal and motivated to defend the man who has led them to survive against the horrors of the estate

@@PxHDB The way I see it, the characters would focus more on cutting down any raider they see than focus on the safety of the commonfolk. They rally in defense since these brigands have the gall to attack the only relative safe haven in the Estate, but they're not out to save anyone.
"Hey guys, I know you slaughtered three Necromancers, two Swine Kings, three Hags and completed two stages of the Darkest Dungeon but kek I've got the highest crit in the game and broken-ass damage with my bombs. Oh yeah, did I mention my fucking barrel *parries* attacks? Neat, huh?"
well, if you hit a pack full of bombs they'll explode in your face, it makes sence to me
Thankfully it only parries for 6 damage and can easily be taken out by a Houndmaster and have the damage healed by an Occultist whilst your Abomination and Hellion go to town on the Vvulf.
Unfair. Dangerous. Unpredictable. Perfect Darkest Dungeon Enemy.
As if the prophet doesn't have broken damage.
Take a man at arms. Buffed he takes GREATLY reduced damage with defender, and he can "catch" the bombs that the Vvulf sends out, unlike the prophet where you're guaranteed to have at least one death's door on most heroes.
i took your advice and went for the barrel. it was a terrible idea. even if you can deal 25 dmg to it each turn Vuulf just resummons it straight away.Thanks for getting dismas killed for the 2nd time buddy, i shouldve listened to darkfury45 :(

4 adventurers: Hippity, hoppity, get off my property!
When they started, my group contained a Vestal, a Houndmaster, a Bounty Hunter and a Leper.
The Bounty Hunter was the first to die, suffering a critical explosion and bleeding to death when it was his turn. The same fate awaited my Vestal. And with noone to heal his wounds, the Leper did soon join them.
Now all that was left was a critically wounded Houndmaster, standing at deaths door, expecting to soon be another entry in the graveyards index, while Vvulf sat at 5hp.
But he resisted. And then he resisted his minions. Then it was his turn, his last chance - and he delivered the critical blow.
He and the bestest of doggos is my favorite character since that moment.
"The law cannot be killed... and I... am... the law..."
"If i die... i die... standing..."
Had a similar situation with a plague doctor. I was fucking lucky that Vvulf died of blight when his turn rolled around.
I just finished the game after a long break from it. Houndmaster was alive till the end.

Once, I used this track in a D&D game I ran. The fight took place inside a clock tower, and so the clangorous bells signaled the moment where the disused gears and sprockets creaked breaths of life. This is the only track I’ve found that has bells in a combat-themed piece.

Makes me sad that it's so rare to hear this in the actual game, this is one of the best songs in the entire OST in my opinion

This game is difficult. Sometimes the dice roll does not go in your favour. I've been there myself where you must make a hasty retreat. Hope you have better luck next attempt. At least you get to hear the music again..:)

My Bountyhunter almost died while protectong the Town, i swear to god, if i hasen't have found the ancestor's coat, he would have died, i swear, he dodged the explosión of the bombs twice

Hearing this as an army of bandits charge at your hamlet, and all of your adventurers stand ready to face them. They fought gods and monsters and they will not let their home get taken away from them without a fight.

The first time I fought Vulf, three of my four people died and one escaped. I was awfully pissed, and I sweared to avenge my friends. Among the fallen was my original Highwayman that the game starts you off with. Many ingame weeks later after I had gotten much stronger, Vulf attacked the town again. The party I had this time included my original Crusader that the game started me off with. It was an awfully close fight with my Lepar dieing and with my other three characters all being on death's door, but my original Crusader avenged my original Highwayman when he got the killing blow! It was the most amazing non-scripted event I've ever seen in a videogame!

The original Highwayman is named Dismas and the original crusader is named Reynauld.
my dismas also died against vuulf, only to get resurrected and then die again when i sent him in to avenge himself lol

This song was the inspiration of my first DnD character. Just some farm boy seeing the village he once called home burning around him. Decides to join a local Militia, then worked his way up the ranks. Quite a few similarities with the Man-at-Arms. I love this game

I remember using this as the final battle theme in a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, wherein the cult of demon worshippers the party had fought the whole game attacked the player characters' home town and they returned to find it under attck. A hard battle was ended with the now ascended cult leader recieving a flaming greatsword through the chest, courtesy of the fighter chucking it at him in a last ditch effort. He crit and the leader died, with every player character close to death. It was amazing. I love Darkest Dungeon and my proverbial hat goes off to the amazing composition of its music.

Found out about this game when I was searching for music for a tabletop rpg session. Music blew me away, and I looked up the game and bought it shortly thereafter. Mr Chatwood, your music is what sold at least one copy of this game. Everything else was just icing on the cake.

Since yesterday when Vvulf attacked my village, my whole family has been listening to this song. Sounds like an anthem to defend one's home. Beautifull song. A true masterpiece✌️

Watching my entire party go mad because I hadn't anticipated the madmen who told them all their sins, this music blaring in the background... I had lost people before, but this was the first time in Darkest Dungeon I felt truly AFRAID.
This was our home. Our haven. The dangers were out there, not in here, yet here they stood before us! And my stalwart guardians, who had held fast and kept the darkness at bay; Yet now, amidst the fire and the despair, they lost themselves. A Highwayman who could only see his burning home staring back, a Gravedigger who simply went mad, a Helion who's battle rage left her behind to halt the advance - and naught but a Valorous Vestal to try and keep their flesh together through it all until the retreat was called.
Now we've seen our home in flames, the best of us fall not to monsters, but to men. Once the fires of our buildings are doused, the fires of our vengeance will burn threefold.
Stuart, this piece of music is absolutely astounding. This experience would have been so reduced without you, as would have so many moments in this game.

A clash between a team of mercenaries and volunteers that spent their time fighting unimaginable horrors on a mission to clear out the corruption and a group of brigands organized like a small army that bonded over pillaging the countryside and wreaking havoc unopposed, two entirely different forces that grew under different circumstances, largely unfamiliar to one another, but nonetheless equally savage.
Interesting how, while the most of the game focuses on dealing with the forces of madmen, cultists, terrifying and unknown unholy and Eldritch powers, with the atmosphere of hopelessness and stagnation prevailing, the fight against brigands, being the case of known evil, is probably the most spirited and rousing to action.
Especially knowing what comes at the end, it gives the impression that the heroes go "we don't even know what we're after in this life anymore, but these thugs piss me off just enough to give me a purpose"
This...is a pure masterpiece, it shows how much your battle depends on the hamlet, to save it from the brigands. I can't say how much this is art. I hope you will make more content and music from others game.

Well to be fair, he waited for them to leave first.
I still think there should have been more town attack events.
It would have given the impression that the longer you take, the more dangerous your enemies become.
You make constant incursions to enemy territory, but only Vvulf and the Shrieker really go after you specifically.
Not even the Shrieker knowingly attacks you, it just steals Trinkets because they’re shiny and because it’s pretty much still a crow under the eldritch corruption.
The bandits were the only organized (and intelligent) group there aside maybe with the Drowned Crew and the Mosquito Nobles

Not necessarily a huge organized invasion, just events where the town itself is in danger.
Like maybe after coming back from the Weald a fungal outbreak happens and you need to repel it. Or the Swine emerge from a well or something connected to the sewer system they're in.
Perhaps a necromancer could sneak into town and use your cemetery against you in reviving dead heroes as enemies.

Didn't remember this song was such a banger, the feeling of fear abd heroism at the same time with Vulf, Dismas almost dying with the bomb, and Reynauld clutching the fight with crits, love it!
Just yesterday I finally won a campaign, the first time in 3 years of playing Darkest Dungeon. The catharsis gained was indescribable. And that feeling of long-elusive, finally-grasped success somehow enchances the feeling from the entire game and the music. Now, listening to this, I think of the events associated with the music as the memories of the war fought long ago. Not in the way of cherishing the bloodshed, but by honoring the perseverance of those, who fought, who fell, who remained, who absconded never to return, and for those, like me, who kept returning, persisting, untill the end.
Thank You, Stuart. This game was, and still will be one of the greatest expiriences in my life, and Your hardwork is an important piece of the whole picture of this story, wich I, after all those years, finally got through.

Man when I played against Vvulf and his men, I just felt that this was home, but it was being threatened. This track suited the mission so well. You're home, but it's dying. Flee, and it burns to the ground. Fight, and you risk death. It's a lose-lose situation, so have at them and show these low lives their lowly position!
The music in Darkest Dungeon is absolutely stellar work, full props to you Stuart, and everyone else behind the scenes of this game. :)

this song hits so hard. I've been listening to this while working for years and it never gets boring. This one and Warrens Ambush are my favorites. The only song I believe to be on the same level from another game's OST is "The City Must Survive" from Frostpunk
This is like cinematic worthy music.
Theres just a way that you feel immersed by the music and the theme all around in which the scenario develops. Somehow you feel attached to your characters and feel the adrenaline of fighting for survival, but its the soundtrack that makes the game shine, its magnificent.
I really didn't expect a new song during the atack, but i like it :)

I actually used it as the grand finale in one of my D&D campaigns. They had to escape a huge city with the guard and government agents in pursuit. I set the scene with all the belfries ringing to alert the city, just like how the song starts.

Honestly the soundtrack of DD is fantastic, but after so many hours of playing it got a bit repetetive. But when I played the "wolves at the door" quest I literally got goosebumps from this song. Fantastic work!

I imagine that the four members of the squad sent to kill the bandit leader are like a strike team, while the rest of the mercs are defending the buildings of the hamlet. (The more religious ones would defend the church, while the more militant would defend the training grounds.)
Also, this song is the perfect “GET THE FUCK OFF MY LAWN!” kind of song.

I like to think of this song anytime I go to The Sprawl in Darkest Dungeon 2. Sorta fits the same theme of a Town in Chaos, only now the Heroes are just passing through and clearing what remains. Still fantastic as it was 7 years ago.

I am dming a curse of strahd campaign and i had the pleasure of running the "feast" for my PC"s , this was my background music and it fit perfectly . The tension , the panic , the chaos its all there . They were all on edge the entire time . Great song and i cant wait to find somewhere else i can use this at !

It's been almost 4 years and this is still one of my favorite tracks in all of vgm.
So, someone here was talking about how they want a dnd session in this setting. Meanwhile, I’m over here running an *entire campaign* based in the hamlet called Stygian. Yes, I’m taking some liberties, yes, the tone is different from Darkest Dungeon, and yes, your score, Mr. Chatwood, is behind most, if not all, of the sessions. It’s only two people I’m running it for, but the characters are excellent, and it’s the best campaign I’ve had to date. If interest is shown, I could shed some light, but I don’t feel like transcribing everything about it. Regardless, thanks, Mr. Chatwood, for really setting the tone for the campaign. Your work really brings the Hamlet to life in a tabletop setting.

I recently finished this quest with a leper, man-at-arms, jester, and vestal. My leper was only level 5 and the rest of my heroes was level 4. I could of brought the other heroes but some of them were either stressed out, or wasn’t compatible.
In one of the fights. My heroes were all stressed out. My Leper hit a 100 stress, and out of the blue - becomes STALWART. It was one of my best moments, and that’s not all.
The start of the Vvulf fight I hit 3-4 crits in a row that leper hit over 30-50 damage. Man, what a clutch, and I got all the trinkets in that level.
The game is fun.
