    I'm only on lesson 3 (= 3th day of preschool), stuck on conjunctions. When it gets frustrating, I keep coming back to this video. I don't comprehend half the words you are saying, but every time you say אלהימ ...wow! One day I'll be reading it with you בּ God has gifted you and Avram with a beautiful ministry. Thank you for sharing it with the world. שלומ

    "Let there be light" was such a powerful command! I love how concise Hebrew is, too. I sense an economy of characters like including personal pronouns in verbs, adding truncated conjunctions and prepositions to words, adding the possessive case to the end of nouns, and so forth. Blessings to you both for opening up Biblical Hebrew to me and thousands of others. It seemed to be locked, bolted and chained behind vaulted doors with little access to the average Christian, due to it's complexity, strange alphabet, cryptic pronunciation, and availability in most areas outside of certain colleges, universities and seminaries. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

    Thanks Beth.This one really stands out to me since it relates to the Genesis question I emailed you about recently. The point was made abundantly clear that God indeed "rested" or "ceased" on the seventh day. I almost feel like this video was made with me in mind.

    • @jacobmetz3109
      @jacobmetz3109 4 роки тому +4

      One has to be careful in the idea that rest, as far as the Biblical meanings of לשׁבות , לנוח and לנפשׁ are concerned, means that one needs to rest in the modern sense of the word. Rest, Biblically, simply meant to stop or cease from doing a thing. The ark of Noah, for example, came to rest on the mountains of Ararat---meaning that it stopped floating on the waters.

    WISH LIST: Beth reading Genesis 1 -- the whole chapter, just a straight reading, with no attempt at teaching or simplifying. Don't get me wrong: your teaching videos, including this one, are extremely instructive and helpful. But I wish to hear a straight reading of the Hebrew Bible in Beth's clear enunciation and beautiful voice. It would be such a blessed gift.

    Thank you Beth and Avram again for your work! Maybe I am getting ahead of myself, but where would you suggest I start reading on a daily basis from my BHS readers addition? (i.e. a particular book that is easier like narrative?)

    • @AlephwithBeth
      @AlephwithBeth  2 роки тому +5

      Hi Nathaniel, most narrative is easier than poetry, but there is no particular narrative book that is "easy Hebrew," so you will find complex grammar and vocabulary everywhere. Many people start with Jonah or Ruth because they're shorter/more manageable to finish. I like the first half of Exodus too, and the story of Elijah is fun. Surprisingly, Jeremiah has some passages with simpler vocabulary. But if your main experience with Hebrew so far is with our videos up through lesson 43, then you'll probably find that the unsimplified biblical text is still quite hard to plough through. At this point we still have lots of grammar and vocab to cover in the videos before most of our followers will be ready to tackle the original text without getting discouraged. The Readers Edition will definitely be a help though! All the best! :)

    • @AlephwithBeth
      @AlephwithBeth  3 роки тому +3

      Thanks! When two nouns go together as a special pair, the conjunctive vav often takes the special form וָ. Tohu va-vohu is an example of a special pair connected by וָ. You're correct, if it weren't for that, we would expect shureq instead.

    Is 'yehi' in 'yehi or' related to any of the forms we have learned so far? I think it's similar to 'vayehi' (there was), and it seems to be some 'imperfective form' but I'm not sure what that exactly entails. It also doesn't seem to be an imperative to 'be' something (which the ordinary translation 'let there be light' seems to imply)

    • @AlephwithBeth
      @AlephwithBeth  3 роки тому +2

      "yehi" is what is called a jussive form, which expresses a desire like "may it be/let it be." Yes, the form is similar to the vayyiqtol form vayehi. The jussive form is the same as the vayyiqtol form stripped of "va."

    Do you think there is a connection between the number 7 (Sheva) and the word Shabat (finish)? It seems they have a mutual root, and it would be a strange coincidence that the word for finishing would have anything to do with seven if it were not for the creation story.

    • @AlephwithBeth
      @AlephwithBeth  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Tymoteusz, no I don't think there's probably a connection. Although the two words have two root letters in common (shin & bet), the final root letter is different (ayin vs. tav). So any similarity is probably coincidence. The verb שׁבת probably means more like "to cease" or "to stop" instead of "to finish," which is usually expressed with the verb כלה.

You are to work six days, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Shabbat to YHVH your God. In it you shall not do any work-not you, nor your son, your daughter, your male servant, your female servant, your cattle, nor the outsider that is within your gates. For in six days YHVH made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Thus YHVH blessed Yom Shabbat, and made it holy.

    Is there any connection between מלאכה and מלאך?

    • @jacobmetz3109
      @jacobmetz3109 4 роки тому +1

      Both words are from the root לאך and means to dispatch or to send [with authority]. The English angel comes from a similar root angelo which means to send with a message. One of the coolest verses about the definition of these two is Haggai 1:13
      וַ֠יֹּאמֶר חַגַּ֞י מַלְאַ֧ךְ יְהֹוָ֛ה בְּמַלְֽאֲכ֥וּת יְהֹוָ֖ה לָעָ֣ם לֵאמֹ֑ר אֲנִ֥י אִתְּכֶ֖ם נְאֻם־יְהֹוָֽה׃
      Then Haggai the Lord’s messenger [מלאך] spoke the Lord’s message [מלאכות] to the people, saying, I am with you, says the Lord.
      The idea behind the noun מלאכה is that it is a task done either for hire or as service. The service of the Tabernacle, the task of the Levites, is called מלאכה as well as עבודה. When in reference to the day of Shabbath, we are to cease from our task---not become zombies like most Orthodox Jews misunderstand it. This is made abundantly clear by the commandment itself
      שֵׁ֤שֶׁת יָמִים֙ תַּֽעֲבֹ֔ד וְעָשִׂ֖יתָ כָּל־מְלַאכְתֶּֽךָ׃
      Six days you shall serve [לעבוד] and do [לעשׂות] your tasks [מלאכתך]
      No matter how one looks at it, the melakhah that was to be ceased [להשׁבת] was one of service [עבודה].
