- In winter, villages perched at over 12,000 feet altitude are practically cut off from the rest of the world. A mere few tracks, hacked into the mountain schist, overlooking dizzy precipices, lead up to them. These tracks are the only supply routes for the villages of Shimshal or Chipoorson.
Raymond and Mohammad are two of the rare drivers crazy enough to risk taking these roads covered in snow and ice. The least mistake at the wheel of their 4×4 vehicle or minibus will send them crashing down two thousand feet below.
A few miles from the Chinese border, nestling in the hollow of the Hunza mountains, the Wakhi villages carry on their ancestral traditions: like bouzkachi, a ferocious game where acrobatic riders fight for the carcass of a goat.

A very close friend and a wonderful man was Pakistan and he would go back to his country once a year for a month. Every time he would bring me a couple outfits specifically made. He would always say he picked those patterns out to match my hair. I always offered to pay but he just smiled and said friendships are meant to be treasured and this is just one way I treasure you. We would sit some times for hours and he’d tell me stories of his homeland. He was one of the kindest, honest, trustworthy and loving person and I miss him so. But he passed away in his beloved Pakistan and for that I am grateful. Thank you for showing the Pakistan people in good light, they deserve it.

I've ridden there on my motorcycle all the way to the Chinese border. Landslides, waterfalls over the road, glaciers that destroyed entire roads as well..crazy but so so beautiful. Pakistan has a special place in my heart💚.
Before I watched these documentaries, I used to complain about roads going to my farm from Lusaka, my hometown in Zambia. After watching few of these documentaries, I realised that there are more challenging places across the globe. Thanks a lot for opening my eyes. Nice documentary.

I was in the Hunza Valley back in 1990 and I thought that the Karakoram Road was insane, the road to Shimshal is another level of insanity and driving it at night , Good Lord!
The Hunza Valley is an amazing, magical place and if you have never been there , then go, you will not regret it as it is truly a stunning place , I hope to one day go back and see those mountains once again 👍👍👍

I was visiting that exact place Hungza valley in October 2016. The people there are so friendly and happy. There’s nothing for me to complain about since then. That road made me so nervous when I sit in the minibus. I couldn’t imagine they still drive in winter. God bless them!

Fantastic docu. I was two times in Northern Pakistan: in 1975 in Swat and in 1979 in Chitral. By that time the roads further north were even worse and even more dangerous.
you must have been to Yarkhoon valley and boroghil in Chitral where I come from. we were small kids in those days and we used to see foreign tourist camping in our village with amazement and enthusiasm. they seemed to have descended from heaven for us as they looked different, better dressed, and fed. and we used to talk to each other about what the hell they were doing here in these extreme and harsh conditions leaving their prosperous abodes.

Such awesome, stunning beauty in Northern Pakistan. Thanks for the video. I bicycled from Islamabad to Kashgar, China along the Karakoram back in 1988, then another time from Pindi to Peshawar to Chitral to Gilgit and on to Skardu and beyond. It was nerve-wracking at times but they were the best bike trips I’ve ever done.

such a beautiful documentary. it makes you root for all the individuals shown in this film and pray for their well being. Big salute to people like these around the world who put life and limb at risk to earn their daily bread. look at the sweet kids in this video and their angelic smiles. I pray that their Fathers comes home to hug them everyday after the perilous journey that they undertakes to earn a living. God bless them all. There are some areas of Pakistan such as these where i would have loved to back pack. they are pristine and rustic. similar to Leh/ Ladakh in india. unfortunately, being an Indian, my dream of back packing in these areas of Pakistan will never become a reality .
Maybe one day friend. Our governments need to realize there is great opportunity for trade and buisiness.

This documentary is I guess more than 10 years old... The roads are in much better conditions.. People lives are improving and there has been a lot of tourism in northern Pakistan especially in these areas

I can testify the water around North Pakistan is something else. when you've spent ur life in England drinking and bathing in recycled chemically laden toilet water.... you feel the difference, you really do.
you feel it nourish your body, it wants more, doesn't leave your skin dry either, after 1 month there I looked 5 years younger. my newly emerging wrinkles disappeared on my face and hands. in England, we age quicker. water has a huge part to play in that, not to mention even the basic fruit and veg grown with that water, taste a million times better too.
someone tried to grow Pakistani honey mangoes in the USA, same plant genetically, but it didn't taste the same - the water and soil is the difference.
This specific area of Pakistan is among the most unique places on earth. Five of top ten tallest mountains are located here including No 2: K2 - the deadliest on this planet. Three mountain ranges originate from near here.

I am very happy that the editor of this video filmed and kept in a game of bous-kashia, the first time I've ever seen the game played live. Previous to this I've only read descriptions of it. Very interesting video into a fairly alien culture for most of us.
The roads were really in amazingly good condition compared to many other more populated areas though, dispite the landslides at least the road was tarmac for the majority of the way!
Driving with all the tassels and ornaments hanging from windshield is even an acquired skill. Crazy . 🙏🏼

When you see what these women have to endure during the winter, carrying the dried grass to their village, it humbles me, considering the relatively easier life that most of us are accustomed to and take for granted.
Last year in November, i spent weeks in Hunza&skurdu
. I’m totally fell in love with mountain, people, simple food. It’s very safe We left our camera and other equipments in the car. People will greet you with smile and Salam. For sure, I’m going back and taking more people with me.
Rehman is such an awesome guide and a crazy driver. Those who have meet him know how gem of a person he is.
