- So, it's been a little bit since the Mario Bros movie dropped. And my goodness. It was actually really good. A very minimal plot, but great in almost every other respect, this has gotta be up there for one of the all time greatest video game film adaptations. It encapsulated the fun nostalgic quality of Super Mario, and is just pretty awesome all round. My thoughts and more within. Enjoy.

Honestly I want more adaptations of video games, be they animated or live-action. Though for the more plot-heavy games, I hope they have a good team of writers.
I enjoyed the film. I do understand about the story problems, but then again most Mario games have a basic plot.
I loved this movie the whole way through bruh
Critics when they realize mario games don't have that much story either: Fucking disintegrating
The critics are so wrong about this movie! The voice acting, animation and characters are phenomenal. Easily, a 10/10.
it probably the expecations it went from the lowest possible to the highest possible and people thought he be illuminations best movie sense illuminations
Agreed 10/10
Perfect 10/10
yea
I enjoyed the movie so much. Just looking at the references made me feel nostalgia.
I saw the movie and man was it a real blast, and yeah. The critics were indeed wrong. I'm sure there's gonna be a sequel.😁
As someone who had a blog reviewing books and movies, I think the critics are being hypocritical here. It's known in the animated and reviewing space that critics have a hate boner for Illumination. A studio that focuses on fun films over prestige. Thanks for your glowing review of a fun movie.
I've never played the Mario games or have any interest in the franchise, but I did see the movie yesterday and it was enjoyable. That's the only word that describes it, enjoyable. This is from the perspective of a non fan. I'm sure if I was, I would have absolutely loved it and appreciated the game's references, I did notice one or two but that's it. So, yeah it's a basic movie but still fun and definitely something you can recommend for a short fun time.
And they say people like you don’t exist
The new Super Mario Brothers movie was fun and funny
And the animation was Buteyfull
I can't wait for this to come to Blue ray and DVD just so I can watch it again
I got into video games as a hobby because of Nintendo and the Mario luigi pokemon Kirby Nintendo was my childhood I'll say it thanks you Nintendo and Illumination this was absolutely fantastic and I hope we get more great video game movie like this moving forward
I went and saw this movie the day it came out. So nostalgic
I really enjoyed the movie! I wish there was a bit more buildup for the Rainbow Road scene and why Mario felt the way he did while being in the Mushroom Kingdom. But I smiled the whole way through.
Needless to say, I wanna see this become a new Cinematic Universe.
The movie is awesome I just watched it today , soundtracks are great , actions are great , like the Mario Kart scene and the final showdown , also love how Peach Grabs an ice flower and starts getting Bowser
9/10 but only because there must always room for improvement
Just watched it with friends and all of us were hooked! I absolutely loved it, this might be one of my favorite movies ever
Loved❤it so much! It appealed to me in so many ways! I was always playing the games and wondered if an anime would give it the glory it deserved; so it did!
“That’s MAMA LUIGI to you, Mario!”
I had HIGH hopes for this movie, being a huge Mario nerd myself; even since I was really young. And I can confidently say, this film was everything I would have hoped for coming from a Mario movie. Where to start?!
Well, firstly, I was so impressed by how they were able to give the characters so much personality; not the most revolutionary personalities of all time, but ones which made sense given what we already know about these iconic characters. Which is even MORE impressive, given that they don’t even SPEAK nearly ever in their respective games. But you still have a basic, bare-bones jist of them; given that the Mario franchise mostly focuses on gameplay rather than developing an intriguing, groundbreaking story. So the characters never needed to speak much at all for what the games were going for. But the fact that this movie was able to work off of the basic traits we know from these characters, and blend them into something NEW that still made SENSE, and what we were still familiar with, was amazing to me. Like, the character of Mario himself from this film was the EXACT personality I’d expect Mario to have! Brave, modest, kind, friendly, hardworking, and tenacious. And yet, they’re STILL able to build off of that pretty well where he’s pretty likable and relatable, with the stuff they decide to add.
Peach was also done excellently, which was the biggest fear I had about this film from the trailers. Not the fact that they made her strong and able to fight for herself, because that’s what I’d expect in this modern age; they had to make her more interesting and actually get to do things. Plus, Nintendo has been giving Peach a LOT more agency in this recent year, and for a while now in their newer games compared to say, the 80’s, in their own ways. From making her a playable character in Mario Kart, Mario Party, and in the Sports games, to even making an obscure game with her as the titular character! There’s even news that she’s going to have a SECOND one of her own games in the near future, which I’m super hyped for! But I was only worried that they were going to make Peach one of those forced “strong female characters” that is PLAGUING the live action Disney remakes with the Disney princesses in my opinion. And Hollywood in general, tbh. Only there to shove it down your throat how strong and badass she is, how “she don’t need no man”. And in the worse case, be downright insufferable and nasty to the male characters, constantly yelling at everyone and just whining to get her point across. Also, for Peach to be the one who saves the day in the end, and have Mario reduced to being a bumbling idiot getting in the way, and disrespecting his name as the hero! As these live action Disney remakes seem to be doing with nearly all of the Disney princes. However, this turned out not to be the case at ALL for Princess Peach in this movie, in my opinion. She’s no longer a damsel in distress, but she’s still genuinely such a kind and caring person, like she always was in the games. She would do anything for her people, to keep them safe, and treats everyone with respect. She was just so likable, and so unintentionally funny at points, even though she was admittedly not as funny as the rest of the cast. While I do personally wish she had more flaws, and think she comes off as a bit of a Mary Sue at times, that’s not a priority for me at all. As long as I like a character, and find them enjoyable, then I don’t care how much of a “Mary Sue” they might be seen as. Overall, movie Peach is a perfect example of how to do strong female characters in animation RIGHT. Disney should take some notes, tbh, and realize they were already DOING that with their princesses, especially from their Renaissance period; and that there was nothing that needed to be fixed with them in the first place. Peach was strong without having to SAY she was strong, and they never demonize any of her more “feminine” qualities such as kindness and empathy. Because those DO NOT make someone weak in any way!
I just watched it with a friend and this movie is a blast! The only negative thing is that Yoshi didn't make an appearance. At the end, there was an egg with the wedding gifts. I thought Yoshi would hatch and assist Mario, but sadly no Yoshi came out. Maybe in the second movie who knows. The pinguins were cute, Peach was pretty badass and they even did a sidescroller thing on earth. That's all pretty cool and I wanna see more. I'm more of a Sonic fan and never thought that Mario is that cool, but this movie changed my mind. Sonic is better, but Mario has the better movie, not gonna lie. I have much more respect for Mario now than ever.
At the very end of the credits, there's a short tease for a sequel which shows a Yoshi egg in the NY sewers starting to hatch. So yeah they're definitely saving Yoshi for next time.
Honestly i think yoshi should have been in this film instead of donkey kong cause i see donkey kong more as a character if his own franchise then a mario character
@@jskywalker58 well they needed a way to establish the Donkey Kong franchise as well. It's already been confirmed that there will be a sequel to this movie, a DK spinoff, Mario Kart series, etc. This is basically just the beginning of the "Mario multiverse" if you will.
I saw it and I really did enjoy it. Jack Black pretty much made the film!!
Yeah, Donkey Kong's voice was not what I imagined it to be but it was alright. That scene with the Toad definitely irked me too.
The blue flame in the prison cell started to piss me off. IT COULD FIT BETWEEN THE BARS!! IT SHOWED THAT IT COULD! WHY DID IT "Seek the sweet release of death" ITSELF AND JUMP DOWN?!?!
I don't know about a sequel. Would it be about Peaches and her origin? Will Bowser escape? I'm pretty sure his mage still alive. Also Bowser should have just stayed with him tho. They were a cute-ish couple 😂
I want a Lugi's Mansion movie now.
1:23 - 1:32 You mean like Sonic 2? 😐
Don't get me wrong, you're free to like this movie, but I recall you going absolute ham on Sonic 2 for the same things you either brush aside or praise in this movie. At least some acknowledgment would be nice.
Personally, I'm somewhere in the middle of the critics and audiences. I acknowledge that this is a movie made for Mario fans, but I can't pretend I don't see where the critics are coming from. We don't want this to become the new standard for family films: All style, no substance.
Thank you for making this review of the super Mario bros movie and and don't worry I agree with you on this 10/10 just need to work on some voice acting and writing but animation was key on point straight up but what you said about princess peach respect
My fellow, we are confident in rating it an 11 out of 10 in our hearts.
As someone who wished for a Mario movie, this did not disappoint!
I don't think the critics were the right audience for this movie hence their critique is not fair to what the movie tries to accomplish, I think in this kind of film the best people who critiques are the actual fans of this games and enthusiasts of animation and honestly different genres should have different critiques for their specified audiences and not just the same 50 people
We had fun with this movie, but I still need a reference to decide if a new movie is worth the time and money. What do you recommend?
I would say it's was surprisingly good. I still want extended Director's Cut without pop songs. I think movie without them going to be even better.
For Bowser, he was probably saving it up in case he needs it and as a bargaining chip against Peach
For the Penguins…yeah I have no idea. Seeing as they are prideful despite being severely weak, maybe they refuse to use it out of their pride
I enjoyed it as a movie but the pacing wasn't good which is what I agree on. I can't wait to rewatch it in English since I watched it in Spanish first. I just hope Rosalina is introduced in the sequel if not maybe the 3rd film
I’m watching it tomorrow!
i honestly loved the movie. i think chris pratt, charlie day, and jack black were amazing. i swear them choosing charlie for luigi was the perfect choice! although i do love jack black, i feel like bowser was definitely a bit extreme for him. dont get me wrong i love him and think he is hilarious, but i feel like his voice really doesnt match bowser. but yeah i loved the movie, for sure a 10/10!!! definitely buying the dvd when it comes out.
This movie is a good 7-8/10. Bowser being the best part of the movie. I just wished Luigi and Bowser had a bit more screen time. Other than that it’s a very fun movie
When critics and audiences disagree so much like this, clearly the critics have made the mistake as they are unable to judge what people enjoy.
I'm worried that the movie won't leg out well. I hope it does and it probably will. But I'm scared about the box office going down. The Apr 12 box office was like 10,000,000 it's going down too much
well news reports state it may be one of the highest grossing animated movies, I don't think there is much to worry for the movie now
April 12 was a Wednesday. People are more likely to see movies on the weekend. If the 2nd weekend dropped off significantly, then I would be worried.
When’s the next miraculous episode review?
Did you think it was because of the Direction?
Yes! This movie gives me so much hope for a competent Legend of Zelda animated movie!
Also, of course the plot of the movie is threadbare - the plot of the GAMES are threadbare! What were the critics expecting, a five hour political commentary about why Peach is wearing pants and isn't a Damsel in Distress? SMH.
crazy
As a big Legend of Zelda fan, I REALLY don’t want Illuminations to make a movie for it. It needs to be done the right way for the series, and a cartoon style like Mario wouldn’t fit.
a cartoon style would only fit if the movie's direction was based on the NES, handheld games or straight up the toon games like WW. unlike Mario, Zelda has had different styles over the years which at first people were uneasy but now people are like cool with it
It's a fun movie but nothing more then that
The critics are way to harsh but I think the audience is giving it too much praise
Like 96% procent, for real? I haven't looked up that many other movies but I can't find another animated movie with such a high rating (highest Puss in Boots 94)
That would make the best animated film of all time according to audiences, which it isn't, not by a long shot and I think everybody would agree with me.
Personally think it should have like a 70-80% score
It'll likely level out overtime. I'm sure Puss in Boots was initially higher as well.
It also depends on what people were expecting out of this movie. Really all people wanted from it was a fun movie that respected the IP and had lots of references. It delivered on that. (Plus there was backlash from the critic hate)
As for Puss, people didn't start off expecting anything but in short order there was so much hype around it which probably accounts for the slightly lower score.
I'd expect Mario's rating to lower to mid-high 80's in the coming months.
The Mario movie was good, but personally, I liked Sonic the Hedgehog 2 better. 'Course that's probably in part because I like most Sonic games more than most Mario games.
I’ve heard people saying how this movie played it safe, but I have to ask… what risks could they have taken? Yeah the plot may not be all that complex but neither was the game. ANY game the Mario brothers had been in when you think about it. So I think it’s ok they didn’t do anything all that risky.
I enjoyed the movie
It's "Super Mario Bros." not "No Country For Old Men"
Sad people are trashing this movie I dont understand why people love hating Nintendo nowadays
I really wish you gave Sonic Movie 2 an ounce of the same treatment you gave the Mario Movie here. Of course I predicted you would favor Mario’s attempt despite the flaws because it’s Mario. And Mario is the “savior” of the video game industry yada yada yada. Meanwhile you harshly and unfairly criticized Sonic 2 for many of the same reasons you praise Mario because he’s Sonic; the world’s punching bag.
Or at least that’s how it seems, and it’s disappointing to see.
My theory of the bad rating for the Mario movie. "Oh, it's not Minions or Despicable Me. Let's give it a bad rating." The critics just suck.
It was good I did like Peach but I do wish they didn’t make her a one woman army. Now I can hear the angry clickity clack of those keyboard but let me explain Peach in almost every median she’s been in was her being more damsel in distress so it would’ve been nice if they gave her moments of being a Bad ace while still having her have some struggles and letting that be extra motivation for Mario. Knit pick yes but I think it would be so much nicer franchise wise to make Peach grow out of damsel to warrior now any future movies there’s not much you can do with her moving forward then tired trope of lovesick girl aiming to get Mario’s attention
I agree. She was too much of a Mary Sue. No problem with her being very capable but I wish there was a moment when she needed someone else's help or showed a real flaw.
In my opinion in the scene where she's trying to cheer up Mario after he failed at the obstacle course, she should've explained that it took her time to get where she is and actually meant it. Instead of using it as set up for a cheap joke that I could see coming from a mile away.
@@kabsageigj8941 She did need help. Her plan at the wedding didn’t quite work. She froze the chain holding the prisoners up, then later lit King Bob-Omb, but she misjudged how long the ice would freeze the chain, so when it unfroze, instead of jumping away from the explosion, she got caught off guard and it (literally) blew up in her face and she lost her power up.
If it wasn’t for Mario and DK, Luigi and the Kongs would have all been dead by falling in the lava. They needed DK’s strength to hold the chain up after that, Peach wouldn’t be strong enough for that.
Realistically the only thing Peach did in that scene that mattered was punch out Kamek, who was taken out of the equation so Bowser couldn’t cheat with magic.
Speaking of which, it took Peach, DK and Toad to hold off Bowser, and even then none of them were strong enough to fight him by themselves.
So while Peach did a lot of things, she did make mistakes and if it wasn’t for other characters coming in, several people would have died.
There’s plenty you can still do with the Peach that was set up in this movie.
Mainly explore her backstory. Expound upon where she really came from. There’s a lot of interesting directions they could go with that.
@GuyWithNoNickName Look I didn't say she totally outshined Mario but she did come pretty close. And realistically had she had another power up after she got hit, she wouldn't have needed Mario at all. Not to mention she's the only reason Mario and Luigi were able to reach the Super Star.
@@kabsageigj8941 Saying “had she had another power up” is just rewriting the scene. Adding more to a character just to make others irrelevant.
She could’ve had a whole basket of different power ups with her, but the fact is she didn’t. Luigi still would have fell at the very least, and Peach is just one person, she couldn’t pull the prisoners back up (which I don’t think she’d have the strength to do anyway) and save one from falling at the same time.
Also, yeah, it’s called Teamwork.
Peach helped Mario get a chance to run to the Star, Luigi saved Mario from getting burned on the way there. They all helped each other out. As much as they couldn’t get the star without Peach, they also couldn’t get it without Luigi. So if it was just Peach there without Luigi, Mario would’ve been burned and not have a chance to get it. Everyone played their part.
Critics are always wrong when a movie is good they would give it a bad
who cares about the critics anyways? it is a great movie
Another moment where the critics are idiots in their reviews
Nah, the critics were right about this movie. I’m a Mario fan and enjoyed the movie. But quality wise, it’s a pretty mediocre film. The story is paper thin, the characters are underdeveloped, the writing is formulaic, the humor is scattershot, and the soundtrack includes pop songs that can feel misplaced.
the critics need to realize that the supermario movie bumped disney off.
but I bet that disney is shocked that a movie is better than their live action movies.
Before you know it Disney will buy illumination
@@ALLINE835 they don't need to because they got dream works.

This film is badly written. Eye candy, fan service and making money don't make a film good. That would make the lion king remake and transformers films good films, they are not. You can like bad films.
The Lion King remake was pretty much the opposite of fan service.
you think the live action lion king remake was "eye candy"?? that shit looks ass bro
I can definitely sympathize with that take, but I'm not sure if that's a completely fair comparison. This movie was at least made with a lot of love and understanding for the source material, even if it relies on it a bit too much. Lion King remake made few changes to the script, but those changes and the rest of it (visuals, score, voice acting) show that the makers had little to no understanding of what made the original a classic.
Personally, I'm somewhere in the middle of the critics and audiences. I acknowledge that this is a movie made for Mario fans, but I can't pretend I don't see where the critics are coming from. We don't want this to become the new standard for family films: All style, no substance.
Please elaborate, give three examples of bad writing.
It's "Super Mario Bros." not "No Country For Old Men"
