Sirarakhong Hathei Myths & Facts

Sirarakhong Hathei (Chilly) is known for its vibrant colour and flavour. The chilies can reach up to a length of 9 inch and are rich in calcium and Vitamin C. The chilly is endemic to this village as efforts to farm elsewhere has not produced the same result. The 10th Sirarakhong Hathei Phanit (Chili Festival) was celebrated in 2019. This year, the village has cancelled the festival due to the pandemic.

Sirarakhong Hathei, a special chilli variety, have acquired the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. GI (Geographical Indication) tag is basically a measure, which defines the region of origin of a food or agricultural produce. It further signifies the origin of a product as intellectual property of that region. What makes it so important is that the GI tag of one country cannot be claimed by other countries.
