    I didn't think I would like to own a P-Birkin, I was plant browsing in my local garden shop and saw one and bought it, reported asap into a terracotta, sure enough today (from buying 6wks ago) it is 3 times the size, leaves are looking amazing, in a few weeks I will have to transfer to a next size up pot, I must say it's the easiest growing Philodendrons 😊

    I recently purchased my very first birkin a few days ago from an online seller. When i got the plant, i noticed that the older leaves have already yellowed & the potting medium used was just plain rice hull. So I decided to repot it. When I saw the roots, some of them are already rotting :'( So i immediately googled how to save it and found your video! Thankfully the plant that I got already has multiple nodes so I was able to divide it into 3. I really hope the mother plant can still be saved though.

I don't know that I can chop it up yet, but I am glad to know what to do when the time comes. 🙂 I really appreciated having the update as part of the video so I didn't have to remember to check in at a later date to see how successful the propagation was. Omg how amazing! And so satisfying. I am hoping for some advice. I've been keeping houseplants for 25+ years, rescued many plants and nursed them back to health, as well as purchased and kept other plants healthy, and hardly ever needed to do anything more than the regular repot. Fast forward to three weeks ago, when I bought a Philo Imperial Red that wa stressed. I've usually been able to bring stressed plants back to healthy so I didn't think much of it, but what I didn't realize was that the grower had up-potted from a 4 inch pot to a 6 inch it in straight peat, no pumice/perlite, etc., and also potted it way too deep, then the store had completely soaked it, so the petioles started rotting off one by one. By the time.I realized, it had only a couple of leaves left, and today I tried to save what's left by removing the last couple of leaves (they were detaching anyway), even the growth point/new unfurled leaf sheath at the center had begun detaching so I removed it too. Ugh. So, I'm left with a decent root system, a length of stem with a few nodes, but no leaves at all. Do you think I should bother? Can these come back from roots with no leaves? I rinsed all the dirt off in hydrogen peroxide/water and removed the roots that were rotted. I put it in water in partial sun/shade. Seriously have no clue if it's worth any further effort? Thank you for any advice.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  3 роки тому

      You can propagate philodendrons without leaves. Use single node cuttings placed on sphagnum moss thats kept humid but not wet. Make sure the aerial roots are gently tucked in the moss 🙂

    Thank you for the tips! I found mine at a Canadian Tire for around 12$ at the end of summer. I couldn’t believe my luck! I’m all confused by its root system though I think I will wait a bit 😬

    This just showed up on my recommended page...the title made me curious because it seemed like a fully informed video with out having to go to multiple videos to see propagation progress. I subscribed however because of your “tickles your pickles” comment!🤣looking forward to more videos from you

    I've been wanting to do this to my overgrown and very mature monstera... I've propagated from it multiple times, but I feel like the parent plant needs a fresh start at this point. Will probably get 5-6 new plants from it if I chop it up now. lol I need a voice of reason here, and this video just makes me want to propagate in water and let the parent plant regrow on its own.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  4 роки тому +1

      Monsteras respond well to pruning and may even give you a few branches. If your cuttings already have aerial roots you can stick them straight into soil actually

    I will get my first Philodendron "White Wave" next week and I hope it can survive the winter conditions in my not so light room. As I read, they are able to survive this conditions, but I am new into the plant world, and I am starting to get more involved into the proper care of each of them since the past 4 or 5 months.
    Thanks for the nice video! I subscribed immediately!

    I was laughing when you are swaying your P.Birkin, worried that would snap off. Thank you for sharing the experience and now I'm more confident to cut my slow grow P.Birkin after all the lower leaves drop off a month ago. And I suspected root rot which then I transferred it to semi LECA.

    I have several self-heading philos and you answered a lot of my prop questions, thanks so much

  • @luckybarrel7829
    @luckybarrel7829 3 роки тому +4

    It's a ' self-heading' philodendron vs. a 'vining' philodendron. Also, that brown leaf and stem is a reversion to the red-congo form. If you want to retain the Birkin characteristic, it is recommended to cut as below as possible (I know, difficult as even you've realized) the node of the reverted leaf. It eventually reverts completely, so I like to separate it and observe it as a separate plant (it's very unstable and even reverts back to some Birkin sometimes).

    • @AtinyElring
      @AtinyElring 2 роки тому +2

      Could the entire plant reverse back to the Red Congo? If I WANT this to happen, would I just let it transform on its own and would it last? Or does this plant go back in forth due to the mutation?

    • @luckybarrel7829
      @luckybarrel7829 2 роки тому +1

      @@AtinyElring Yes that has happened often. But it can even revert-revert back to Birkin after since it's highly unstable. You don't know what you'll get. Even I'm hoping to get a Red Congo from my Birkin. But if you want a stable one, you're better off buying a Red Congo.
