Hey LFG, I have 2 Penn Number 9’s that belonged to my Grandfather. He passed away of cancer at an early age when I was 11 years old. I am now nearly his age when he passed away. I sent them back to Penn last year and had them refurbished. I bought new St. Croix rods for them. My best fishing buddy took my 2 sons and I out this summer and we caught Spanish Mackerel on Grandpa’s reels! After the trip I cleaned them up and put them on a shelf. They will always be my favorite reels! My Grandmother just passed away this year at 96 years old and while going through her things I found pictures of my Grandfather and my Father on deep sea fishing trips back in the day. I look forward to having the pictures framed and put with the reels in my man cave. Isn’t it funny how simple objects can take us back in time and remind us of those we love? Merry Christmas to you and your family!
oh yeah for sure, with penn you won’t get the best performance, the lightest reels, or the best looking reels but you get a damn good reel for the money that last for ages

The first DC reel for saltwater was the Excense DC 2012... reel was designed for catching Seabass and tbh has probably one of their best DC systems built into it. I had two for a long time and they were flawless.
Jon B has grown up so much, at the beginning he was my least favorite Googan member. He came off as a punk kid to me but now i love the dudes content he's grown on me.
got to say really liked this podcasts. thanks Justin. U and Jon B make a great team; like brothers without the fights; the reel talk was so reminiscent of some of Jon's older podcasts made me smile
Definitely LFG, JonB, and Peric are the best. I understand Peric hasn’t been posting, but he’s good. I like watching fishing vids from people that LOVE fishing, and are students of the trade. These guys are that. Legends.
I love this episode. Every reel has a story. I've got 3 reels from the 90's. Two of them I still use. Every reel has a name and i can remember each one's biggest fish. You guys need to do this every year with boats, rods, bows, guns, hell pick an object and put the story behind it.
I just want to say ive been following lake fork guy for 5+ yrs and ive took a year off of bass fishing to get my life sorted out im excited to get back fishing
I am so glad I came across this video, I’ve been a gear nerd for 15 years now and remember seeing y’all’s videos from the guiding days with LFG and the room vids with JB. I love seeing people appreciate gear like I do.
I still have an old Bantam 100x prior to the mag spool coming out. It spun so freely that I could hardly fish because it would backlash so easily (there was a reason they invented the mag spool for sure). I want to say it was from 81-82. Cost me $100 at a time that I was living on soup and mac & cheese. I also have an old Daiwa Procaster from the same year and I still fish that today.
My first open face casting reel was and old Abu Garcia 5000D I got from my dad, when he bought a couple of these new reels he fell in love with the OG Bantam 100 with teak wood handles that he put on some old Lew's speed stick pistol grip rods I believe they may have been 6' . I remember saving money from mowing grass in the spring and summer and getting a couple of the Bantam 100 s for about $60.00 plus tax at the local Walmart mid to late 70's and i owned several of the 10 XSGs in the early 80's and in the mid 80's I remember getting a Shimano Bass Master reel that you could change the gear ratio with the shift of a lever positioned under the star drag adjuster and it had an anti-reverse push button (talk about technology) which I remember catching several hammerhead sharks and a stingray on while stationed in Hawaii using some old 14/40 oval type monofilament.
7’3 medium light with a 4000 Stratic is the ready to guide set up. Freshwater and inshore saltwater you can throw anything at it and put it in anyone’s hands.

Why would you not want a left handed reel? As a right handed fisher I love to hold the rod with my right hand and reel in with my left. I’m able to finesse the lure better with my dominant hand. Who do most anglers go with a right hand bait caster and reel in with the right hand ?
These 2 are the only 2 googans who haven't changed it up. Much respect to these two. Lunkers and peric use to be like my top 2 but not anymore. Always kinda liked flairs videos but he's the last one I'd like to have a beer with.
