Catra wasn't just pitted against Adora when they were little, she was literally told that the only reason she hadn't been killed was because Adora liked having her around so imagine how it must have felt after Adora left. Her only safety net in an incredibly abusive environment was stripped away and she truly felt as if Adora didn't care about her
Also there's similar dynamic between Catra // Shadow Weaver and Catra and... literally everyone else. Like these manipulation tricks didn't come from nowhere, right?
@@sofyastepanchenko297 yeah there's definitely a huge theme throughout the show of parent/authority figures and how their habits, consciously or unconsciously, are passed down. it's really interesting to see the parallels
update since the video got taken down: I still want to leave a clever comment, but no thoughts, head *still* empty, only gay panic over Adora saying "Hey, Catra."
I'm sure a hundred people have told you this already but I want to emphasize again how you HAVE to view season two and three as one season. The number of episodes adds up to 13 and they were produced together but Netflix decided to release them with a pause and for some reason called them different seasons. They really aren't though. It's one story :)
And the record for fastest re-edit goes to.... Going back through this ep I was struck at just how *good* the storytelling is in this show. The way we're very subtly shown that both Adora and Catra are in desperate need of counselling (or a date, either way), the differences between their styles but that they're *both* still very, very good at what they do, Glimmer getting frustrated by Frosta being basically Glimmer 2.0, Bow somehow retaining his sanity through.... actually does anyone know how he manages that? Anyone? Yet if you don't pick up on any of that the surface details alone still present a great action adventure kids show that will in no way end tragically *cough*. Oh and just for posterity's sake: gotta point out the flirtiest Hey Adora yet by a country mile came from a 'totally accurate' version of Catra pulled, presumably, from Adora's head. Just saying...
this comment could be classed as a minor spoiler: kenny was spot on with his prediction of mara and the first ones. he truly deserves 100 points on the kenny genius counter.
One should note that Scorpia is really Entrapta's friend and during her short time with the princesses, they seemed annoyed with her personality a lot.
Spoilers 5:00 - not Kenny just casually predicting correctly like ... one of the MAIN points of the show, I was completely clueless when I watched it at this point.
You keep pointing out that Adora didn't defend Catra and that it was just like Catra said about she not wanting to be on Shadow Weaver's bad side, but I don't think that's a fair appraisal. Adora was just a kid as well, she wasn't supposed to fight against their caregiver for Catra's safety, she was supposed to have someone to trust to look up for them, and seeing how surprised she was about the Horde being the bad guys, as well as taking into account she had "Golden child" treatment, I think she did believe that. She believed Shadow Weaver held both their best interests at hearth and that she was just supposed to take care of Catra, and if she got into trouble, it was Adora's fault, not Catra's, not Shadow Weaver's, not anyone else's, so of course she didn't jump against SW, because she believed she only had to do her job better. Which sucks so much for her. I hadn't thought abot Frosta and Glimmer's relationship that way, but it makes a Lot of sense, and its... Wow. Super heart touching. The idea of Glimmer being really so similar to Angela, if just in different positions.
I'm glad to see someone point this out tbh! You can't expect a kid to see past their caregiver's emotional manipulation. Shadow Weaver instilled the idea in Adora that Catra getting in trouble was Adora's responsibility, and that the only way to protect Catra would be to do her job and keep a closer eye on her.
So there's a bit of context that needs to be injected into this because while you're right over the specific question of should Adora be expected to protect Catra as a kid the broader context muddies the waters a lot. For one it was Adora that suggested that she was trying to protect Catra, Catra pointing out how limited that protection was isn't necessarily all that unfair especially as this is about the role that Adora's picked up in the present of 'playing the hero' . This is in part a continuation of the friction about Adora coming in to save the day with the spider where Catra did have it handled. Even more broadly there's a rather huge issue with Adora's failure to protect Catra from Shadow Weaver in the context of her actions since the start of show. Adora believed up until Thaymore that the Horde were the good guys in spite of Shadow Weaver's treatment of both of them ( which to Catra would strike particularly strongly as 'mistreatment of me doesn't count as evil enough' ). It's not just a question of Adora's inability to protect Catra as a kid but also how Adora's failed to process her past and integrate it with her current actions, more or less shrugging off Shadow Weaver's treatment of Catra. None of this means that she's literally responsible for Catra either in the present or the past just that both of them are constrained by the thinking patterns instilled in them by their time with Shadow Weaver which deliberately puts them at odds with one and other. TL;DR Shadow Weaver is the worst.
It's also important to note that there really wasn't anything else Adora could've done. Shadow Weaver wasn't basing her treatment of them on how either of them actually behaved, she was deliberately pitting them against each other for her own reasons, and to achieve her own goals. It wouldn't have made any difference how hard Adora tried to defend Catra, she couldn't change anything. Shadow Weaver would blame it all on Catra and coddle Adora literally no matter what. There was never any such thing as Adora protecting Catra to the point of putting herself on Shadow Weaver's bad side. Everything would always be Catra's fault. That's how the golden child/scapegoat dynamic works.
@@AmurTiger I mean I wouldn't dismiss Catra's perception in the matter, but as external audience, what I think it's unfair is implying that Catra had it worse or that Adora could've really prevented any of the abuse Catra endured. I don't think she could, and I think she was facing her own challenges instilled by the situation (and SW, of course). For instance, I don't believe she thought Catra's mitreatments were not "evil enough", I believe she thought they were normal punishments that she (Adora) could prevent on other ocassions if she just protected Catra better next time. Of course she came off as just "playing hero" from Catra's perspective, but from the outside it's not fair to accuse her from that
Frosta taking the throne at 8 years old means that both of her parents were dead by then. She had no one to mentor her about how to deal with normal one-on-one human interactions. All she had were advisors giving her etiquette lessons and strategy classes on how to run a kingdom.
I just knew Montana was going to have a field day analyzing the characters in this show. Just for the record, defeating enemies with a mug/tankard may be the most lesbian thing Adora has done thus far. Reminds me of certain old drinking/dart buds from my sordid youth.
