Bull Paddock Creek Hut - Tramp in the Rainbow Conservation Area

- Sam heads into the Rainbow Conservation Area (just east of the Nelson Lakes National Park and Rotoiti) to the seldom visited Bull Paddock Creek Hut.
Starting from the Rainbow Road and crossing the Wairau River, Sam headed into Sandfly Stream before climbing over 600m to a saddle and dropping into Bull Paddock Creek valley on the other side and continuing on to the top of the valley to locate Bull Paddock Creek Hut.
DoC ceased maintenance of this track in the mid 90s and since then the track has been maintained by Permolat. Be careful to look out for the white markers and pink ribbon used by Permolat to mark the way. The tramp takes in the order of 4-5 hours to reach the hut with a shorter return due to more downhill. Allow 7-8 hours to complete the trip in a day.
The hut is not well known or visited and was actually closed in 2017 until foundation repairs were made in 2019 enabling the hut to be saved and used again in the future.

Top effort, what a lovely spot to get away from it all. Thanks.
Thanks Dave, good spot indeed. Like most topo maps that’s I read (clearly I need to improve my skills), it looked a lot easier on the map than in reality.
Cool day out Sam.
Thanks for sharing mate.
Cheers
Hey thanks mate, I’m enjoying your Te Araroa adventures. Keep up the great work.
@@samandkevsoutdooradventures I appreciate it. Cheers 👊
Beautiful scenery. Thanks for sharing. New subscriber here.
Thanks for your lovely comment. Hope you enjoy our other vids.
I nearly made the same trip earlier in the year but high river flows due to the recent rains put me off - went to the Lees Creek hut instead. Bull paddock is still on the bucket list!
Lees Creek looks like a great spot. Will need to check it out. Did you need permission to access the road that far down?
So how long did it take you to get to the hut and then return?
Hi, it took around 7 hrs return from memory. Definitely quicker coming out due to more downhill.
Do you have GPX? of route ta
Sorry, Andrea, no, we don't have a GPX file of the route taken. It might be something we need to look into doing in the future.
see any animals mate?
Only two goats. One was huge though. A billy goat as big as I’ve ever seen in the bush. I’d say the area is pretty good for hunting esp once you drop over into the valley behind.
