  • We've all been there - hours spent on dialing in all the fine details of each element in a song, only to find that the overall mix is just not where you want it. Sometimes the best thing you can do is to give it a reset.
    In this tutorial, PreSonus software specialist Joe Gilder demonstrates a simple example of how you can reset and simplify your mix using folders.

    Try it with VCAs instead, this will help with the automation and the FX routing. Then once the VCAs are at the right settings, merge the VCA automation. You can then delete the VCA faders and boom, you're ready to go again.

    Totally off topic but it would be cool to see you do a video on the right and best way to save in Studio One. I watched the one Gregor did and it really helped me. I recently had a scary event happen. I opened up an old song and not all the tracks were there...horrifying. Since watching Gregor's video I now save songs I'm working on to a new folder. I still don't understand why Studio One is different all other software like Word, Excel, GIMP or even SAP. Thanks for listening.

    Thank you so much! One thing you quickly went over that was a “pump the brakes moment” for me. In the mixing steps get your mix up to the automation point. I love this!! I am going to hold off on automation now, I think that can muddy the waters if done too soon. And thank you for your mixing steps freebie, need to review that one again! Thanks again for all the content Joe!😊

    Could you maybe include each FX bus into their respective folders? Or maybe make an FX bus folder?

    Great video. So how do you remove all plugins at one time if you want to restart your session? And can you globally set the faders to 0? I also noticed that if I have embedded folders within folders, the command to expand doesn't open the embedded folders. Maybe I am missing something.

  •  21 день тому

    I own studio one since 3rd version and I am still waiting for what would be helpful like in a real console - an option for a global mixer reset (faders and pan), global remove automations button and being able to load scenes between sessions. How hard is that to program? It's a pain to transfer track settings between sessions by using presets on a mixer bus. I'd love to import the whole tracks setup and routing.

    Hey!! How do you link the folder and bus channel? I have the bus channel in the mixer is not linked to the folder. - I FOUND IT!!!!!! look below...

    • @stuartsmith5146
      @stuartsmith5146 21 день тому

      In the Track Roll View (not the mixer view) click on the Folder Track you want to attach to a Bus (this can also be done for a VCA). Open the inspector view for this track (Quick key "4") and look at the "Channel" section on the bottom portion of the window. There is a drop down menu where you can attach Bus Track you have set up in the mixer view (or VCA as mentioned earlier) 👍🏽

  • @JM_2019

    Somehow I'm not getting it. You can use the Track Folder Busses at any time to rebalance the mix - why do you need a short cut to colapse them?

    BTW in regards to automation, once you have automated a track, can you lower the volume of the track and have your automation follow the decrease in level? for instance. If I choose a section where I have automated something so that at that point the volume increases by 3 db, but I want to lower the whole track down by 2 db, I have to go in and change the automation points manually for every point. Is there a way to have studio one lower the automation points by whatever I lower my track volume amount by and drop all automation points by 2 db without having to select each automation point and do them separately? fader goes down by 2db so automation points should also go down by 2db automatically.

    • @lukaswigingtonmusic
      @lukaswigingtonmusic 24 дні тому

      The only way that I can think of (and this is not optimal) is bring your track gain down in very small increments. The automation stays the same but your gain is lower. Or you can add a mixtool plugin that essentially does the same thing.

    Hi Joe
    This is not related to this video. The issue I face is that, in the mastering page, the output (WAV) audio quality is significantly inferior to the audio quality that comes while playing the same song through Studio One 5. I did a real time output. Am I missing anything?
    I opened a service ticket but the service was crappy and no solution was provided other than some FAQs.
    Can you do a video on that?

  • @TarasKuznetsovMusic

    What would really help is making that global “Bypass All Plugins” in the left bottom corner set the faders to zero also. Sometimes you need to listen before and after but turning off the plugins is not enough , because it’s only one part of the mixing process… there is no way to change gains, volumes panning to the point when you just uploaded the project. So maybe further improve that global bypass button to have a kinda “before” and “after” 🙏🏾

    • @NathanHartmann-dq5et

      I think you could maybe use the Scenes feature in the mixer to accomplish this, though you'd have to get in the habit of saving a Scene of your initial channel settings. Just a thought. I believe Joe and/or Gregor have a video or two on the topic of using Scenes, and I think the S1 Help is fairly self-explanatory.

    • @TarasKuznetsovMusic

      @@NathanHartmann-dq5et yep, thought about that… but scenes is really a feature that didn’t grow its roots in me 😁as well as Sketch pad (or whatever it’s called)… but thanks for the idea! I’m mostly arranging and mixing in Studio one, not using a lot of “producer” bricks stuff… just one button before and after would do good 👌🏾

      I might actually be able to help you with this.
      Recently I was mixing a song that my wife created and wanted to do some "experimenting" but did not want to ruin what she originally had done.
      IF I remember correctly I had her song loaded and then as soon as I loaded it I did a "Save As" and saved it under another name.
      In which case I had "Songoriginal" and "Songduplicate" as two separate saves.
      Then I just closed the original and worked on the duplicate file.
      If you would like I will go to my studio and test this option out and report back with exactly what I did.
      Just comment back here.
      **NOTE: Wait until writing me back and allow me to go confirm this with the EXACT steps for you BEFORE you try it.
      If you are concerned.

      @matthewthemartian I would much appreciate it, if you did!
      It seems like such a simple thing, but Gregor and Joe make video shorts about simple things all the time...but I don't think they made a video for this.

    • @matthewthemartian
      @matthewthemartian 24 дні тому +1

      Okay I just tested it.
      I created an entirely new song with the title "Guitar Test" and added two tracks, a guitar and a pad sound.
      I then added an EQ to each of them and a phaser.
      I clicked save.
      I then instantly clicked "Save As" and saved it this way with the title "Guitar Test Duplicate".
      I then closed the song.
      Upon doing this I now had two songs on my "Recent Song List"
      1. Guitar Test
      2. Guitar Test Duplicate.
      I opened Guitar Test and it was exactly as I saved it. With the EQ and phasers in place.
      I then closed that one and opened Guitar Test Duplicate.
      It was exactly the same as the first one with the EQ and Phaser in place.
      So I would say:
      Yes, it seems that the easiest way to do this would be to "Save As" your song with a different title and that will essentially create a duplicate version which you can manipulate at will while having your original song safe and saved.
      If you have any doubts then the best way to see this for yourself and gain confidence is to repeat the steps I took with an entirely new song and this will allow you to see it in action before you use it on an actual song.
      Like a "Try before you buy".
      Hope this helps and hope you have a Blessed night!
