  • Ever had a relaxing beach vacation interrupted by a sudden 60 mph gust of wind while you're trying to operate your ham radio? This week on Live Free and Ham, we recount our family trip to North Carolina, balancing leisure and our passion for Parks on the Air (POTA) activations. Alongside our travel tales, Todd shares his ongoing battle with a rotting deck at home, while I navigate my own ham radio hurdles, including a particularly vexing experience with the Ham Shock Hotline. And don't miss the heartwarming moment when a perfectly aimed beam antenna helped us connect with co-host Ryan during our travels!
Frequency etiquette can be a minefield, and we’ve got plenty of stories to illustrate how patience and diplomacy can turn potential conflicts into opportunities for community building. Tune in as we unpack an intense encounter during a POTA activity, where a net operator aggressively claimed frequency ownership, and how we managed to keep our cool. We also shine a light on the importance of respecting designated frequencies, especially during emergencies and special events like field days, and share tips for maintaining harmony on the airwaves.
Finally, join us as we talk about the unsung heroes in the ham radio world, including a new segment called "Doing Good," aimed at showcasing the positive contributions from ham radio clubs across the globe. Although submissions are slow, we encourage you to share your stories. We wrap up with a shoutout to Kevin from Iowa and his new UA-cam channel, Farm RC Pilot, celebrating his return to the RC hobby. Whether you're knee-deep in a DIY project or navigating the airwaves, this episode has something to inspire every ham radio enthusiast.

Interesting topic for the show.. I listened to the replay while on the road.. Thanks for sharing your experiences with LIDs.. I've had my run in's with a few as well..
I was calling CQ while exercising (Pedal Power) one morning and a "Water Way net" came on to take my frequency.. Said they had been on the freq for 30 years (seems to be the standard time for Nets).. I was about to finish anyway so I QRT.. but after doing some research, I found they get on the air 45 minutes before the net starts and start talking to "hold the frequency" for when the net starts.. They didn't need it for another 45 minutes, but I was interrupting their "pre-net frequency hoarding" discussion time, LOL..
Also, thanks for the shout out Todd.. That was very nice of you to mention.. I knew we both had an interest in another hobby so I sent you the email.. Keep up the great work guys !!..

Kevin, I totally get that. Its insane how folks will do anything to treat HF frequencies as "repeater nets". The "old mentality" has to be broken and the dawn of improved radio equipment allow us to "move frequencies" without too much effort.
I love the new channel - even though I got out of RC years ago. Keep up the great work and look forward to the future videos.

Bands can be dead for awhile, and someone starts calling pota. You can watch people move right in beside you qrm ing. It's really disgusting that people do that.

Yea sometimes its unavoidable as the Propagation can be just static and you can't hear any stations and then BAM! another POTA Activator is on top of you calling CQ POTA.
