Приєднався 19 бер 2023
Welcome to Live Free and Ham! We are four guys who live in New Hampshire and love Amateur or Ham Radio. We have a bi-weekly podcast on livefreeandham.com about everything related to the hobby.
Blending Tech with Passion: The Intersection of Linux and Ham Radio
Unlock the secrets of blending technology with passion as we welcome special guests Cheryl W5MOO, Russ K5TUX, and Bill from the "Linux in the Ham Shack" podcast. With a unique mix of insights on integrating Linux and amateur radio, this episode promises to enlighten and entertain. Cheryl's unique journey, marked by a persistent nudge from Russ over 25 years to conquer her ham radio license, adds a personal touch to our exploration of how women are carving their space in the male-dominated ham radio community.
Get ready for a rollercoaster of stories as we chart Todd's progress towards his extra class license, offering practical tips and resources for fellow enthusiasts. Paul shares his skydiving adventure, complete with weather woes and a limited-edition t-shirt to mark the event. Meanwhile, a deep dive into nostalgia uncovers a love for scouting and the bonds it forges, perfectly tied into our shared love for parks and radio activities. The camaraderie extends to our tech talk, where a new Panasonic Toughbook becomes a star player in field operations.
From the evolution of Linux to open-source software secrets, we explore the shifting tech landscape with help from our knowledgeable guests. The journey through personal call signs and podcast history infuses humor and warmth, while the transition to Linux for ham radio users promises exciting new horizons. As we close, we invite our ever-supportive community to join the conversation, promising laughter, learning, and a deeper connection to the world of ham radio and Linux.

gotta luv nerd tux and moo LOL :)
Interesting convo!! Sending hellos from up here in NH
Thanks! There is always lively conversation on our discord from our shows. Link is on livefreeandham.com
I think Todd’s analogy of RC flying misses the fact that actual flying has gone the same way. Starting with fighters then commercial airlines are all run by computers… it’s not the actual physical input of the pilot in those planes anymore. I do agree with both Todd and Eric about being able to choose. I love my Flex but also enjoy my 891
Yup choice is important. As either way in the end your going to want to play HF so no matter your taste bottom line is RF is what really matters!
You have it backwards! Ford and Tesla took the AM radio out of cars because THE CAR was the problem! It's RFI from the car that was making the radio not useable. if the car puts out that much interference, it's probably not legal under Friendly Candy Company rules i would think. But $$ talks after all!
Robbie, Agree newer electric and even some gas vehicles have bad RFI issues. I know that when I finally complete my HF Mobile install in my Ram that I am going to still be fighting some RFI noise on HF.
I might have watched it if you used a proper antenna in the photo.
Even if you dislike the thumbnail, you might enjoy the show. Thanks for letting us know you came by!
An hour to say "Wow this would be cool"
Well some of us take a while to get to the point :) if you thought that was long you should listen to a HRCC episode ;)
@@LiveFreeandHam can't stand hrcc luv u guys.
VA3MW has already done this, operating his home station via remote in his car. Ping him. -de NI0K
Ill keep running my older 1990's Isuzu NPR heavy duty running UHF/UHF, HF, CB, Mp3 player, GMRS and Scanner in my truck. 73, kq4hcu
N1OG here, I'm with you. I've got an 07 Tundra and I'm not sure I'd want anything newer!
You guys do a great job. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
You guys do a great job. Thank you!
Thank you too!
Keying above 40Watts causes my wipers to operate and my infotainment system to reboot. It hates any RF.
Ouch. That's rough. Ferrites on everything!
Satnoggs too!!!
Eggnogs and satnogs sounds like grandma's getting drunk at Christmas! Lol

Interesting topic for the show.. I listened to the replay while on the road.. Thanks for sharing your experiences with LIDs.. I've had my run in's with a few as well.. I was calling CQ while exercising (Pedal Power) one morning and a "Water Way net" came on to take my frequency.. Said they had been on the freq for 30 years (seems to be the standard time for Nets).. I was about to finish anyway so I QRT.. but after doing some research, I found they get on the air 45 minutes before the net starts and start talking to "hold the frequency" for when the net starts.. They didn't need it for another 45 minutes, but I was interrupting their "pre-net frequency hoarding" discussion time, LOL.. Also, thanks for the shout out Todd.. That was very nice of you to mention.. I knew we both had an interest in another hobby so I sent you the email.. Keep up the great work guys !!..
Kevin, I totally get that. Its insane how folks will do anything to treat HF frequencies as "repeater nets". The "old mentality" has to be broken and the dawn of improved radio equipment allow us to "move frequencies" without too much effort. I love the new channel - even though I got out of RC years ago. Keep up the great work and look forward to the future videos.
Bands can be dead for awhile, and someone starts calling pota. You can watch people move right in beside you qrm ing. It's really disgusting that people do that.
Yea sometimes its unavoidable as the Propagation can be just static and you can't hear any stations and then BAM! another POTA Activator is on top of you calling CQ POTA.
I hope Paul feels better soon.. The show must Go on.. I like Todd shirt too very funny haha nice show you guys. ✌️
Yup.. Magically he recovered and is back in the saddle.
Good discussion guys 😎
Thanks for listening @kc1qdk
This was a great conversation, and there is ALWAYS more to learn.
really I thought I was in the period of my life I knew everything ;)
Great discussion guys, looking forward to my first field day. Just joined a local club in Fort Worth and got involved with build-a-thons and getting my first contact on HF. Brand new licensed ham, got both technician and general at the same test day.
Rodney, That is AWESOME! Love it when folks can get connected up with local clubs. Hopefully your field day was a great first time experience and congrats on your Technician and General on the same day!
I’m not sure when I subscribed to yall but great show thanks for the channel 73 KJ5CTS
James, no problem. Glad your enjoying the channel/pod. 73! LFH
I had to stop back and watch the beginning of the show.. Thanks for the invite.. I enjoyed stopping by for a visit with all our ham friends.. Carlos explaining what a Kilo was to his mom was too much, LMAO !!.. Keep up the great work guys and looking forward to the next year of fun !.. 73, kevin ~ k0klb
Kevin, always glad to have you on! Thanks for coming on the Live Stream!
Do I really need my extra license? Why? N1OG got a good toke! Ha!
You don't but if you want to be able to "Get all the Good contacts" Extra is the way to go!
Sorry I couldn't be there!
No problem. Carlos was a great guest!
Also do not pick on Todd he is my General bro...:)
Roger that!
Awesome job as always guys :)
Thanks for sharing!!
Ha ha. Episode released after the live stream with Jeramy. This was a great conversation!
Loved it! A lot of awesome stuff packed in this one episode!
Good Job Todd!!! If I don't know the answer I choose the longest one 😅
Yup.. or just close your eyes and point to one, that always works for me!
I missed it again! Although... I did manage to activate the PA Grand Canyon on Saturday.
That's a fair trade-off I'd say! We'll in the future make sure you hit that notification so you get reminded when we go live! As in April were going to have an awesome guest on from the far north to talk about POTA!
Jason 2.0 is the Mor Ride Expo if you need too know
Thanks!
Lol 🤣 Todd I like you just the way you are.. and guys stop picking on him ❤️✌️😂
haha!
beginner looking to get into radio. HAM hopefully. Can't wait to learn more.
You can do it! If there is anything we can help with.. let us know! Getting your technician is awesome! When you get it, let us know, and we'll be sure to show it out on the show!
Best of luck Todd in getting your "Extra". Not all the questions are difficult once you understand some basics. For example, the one about the Q of a resonant circuit is easy to understand once it's explained how resistance affects the current flow. No calculations are required. It's all good knowledge that will help you have more fun with radio. Best of luck. Leon KC1LBL.
Thanks for the tips! Once I test it will open more doors to learning more about the hobby we all love! Thanks for listening.
This was great. Kevin is doing a great job showing how FUN ham radio can be.
Yup! He was a great guest to have on and is an inspiration to all of us!
It was great chatting with Kevin on this episode.
It was a great show for sure!
I picked three dates. We shall see!!!!
so far your the only one! But it still early :)
Very cool approach to a giveaway. Good luck on getting the Dual Kilo!!
Hope to see you get in on the action!
I agree with everyones opinion of a good club for me as a new ham I am looking for a club as explained by Ryan that can/will explain things to me as if I’m a 5 year old
There are clubs that definitely are out there, sometimes all it takes is one person to come along side and show you the ways young grasshopper!
Now really... Can you already download the mod? No, right? Great Mod BTW.
I would head over to their website for the latest update radiocraft.w1btr.com/ When I last spoke with Lucas - back in November they were going to have a release soon.
i just got my second park kilo. they are about 30 mins from each other. on this second one, I did it in 10 trips. The first time it was 26 trips
Congrats! Im still hoping to get my first kilo, as Im only 300 away and can walk to it from my home.. so you tell me what my excuse is! :)
Digital is great!!!! I'm a tech and I recently spoke to a fellow in the middle of the Atlantic on a catamaran headed for Antigua! Sounded like he was in my driveway. A Fusion HT, a hotspot and my cell and I can talk around the world while heading on long drives up north!! RF could be done in that situation but with more difficulty and more expensive tri or quad band radios along with HF antennas. Lots of the older hams complain it's not real ham radio butt any tool that lets one ham talk to another is ok with me!!!
We love all the modes! Digital is a great way to dip your toe into getting into long distance comms. Don't let the "sad hams" get in your way of having a TON of fun! Find your people and they will all celebrate in your excitement!
Great Job Guys!
Thanks! Appreciate the support 73!
At about 32:40 you talk about recording video at NEARfest. I've done 1 or two videos at NEARfest in the past and did not have the same reaction as you did. I had people emphatically tell me they did not want to be recorded. The last time I attemeted to record a video at NEARfest (maybe a year or so ago) I even had one guy tell me I was violating his constitutional rights by recording video at the fest. Rather than argue about it I just gave up and don't even bring my camera to hamfests anymore.
Rob, I totally understand. Hopefully we can meet up in the spring and try to turn that around and get people interested in Ham Radio in New England!
