  • The Center for Cooperative Media hosted a virtual press conference with New Jersey candidate for U.S. Senate, Lawrence "Larry" Hamm, to provide insights into his background and policy views.
    Hamm shared his extensive background as a lifelong resident of New Jersey, Additionally, he highlighted his role in mobilizing communities against police brutality and apartheid, showcasing his long-standing commitment to advocating for the rights of oppressed people.
    Hamm provided a comprehensive overview of his background and qualifications, emphasizing his support for Bernie Sanders, previous roles as a delegate, early activism in social justice movements, and leading a student walkout and sit-in in 1971. He highlighted his extensive experience in activism and politics, emphasizing his commitment to social justice and his consistency in fighting for various causes. Hamm also distinguished himself from his competitors by emphasizing his reliability and steadfastness in supporting progressive platforms, including his long-standing advocacy for universal healthcare and self-determination for the Palestinian people.
    Hamm detailed his plans for the next 100 days if elected as a United States Senator, highlighting the importance of defeating the Republican candidate in the general election and supporting the Democratic Party if he does not win. He also committed to rejecting corporate and PAC donations and addressed the biggest barriers to achieving progressive goals, emphasizing the need for an inside and outside strategy to build a social movement for justice. Finally, he discussed the potential expansion of the Supreme Court and the importance of winning the presidency to prevent the appointment of more Federalist Society judges.
    On housing:
    Calls for recognizing housing as a human right, not just a profit center
    Proposes a national emergency declaration to end homelessness
    Wants the government to construct millions of new affordable housing units
    Supports federal assistance for local rent control measures
    On immigration:
    Advocates for an immigration policy based on human rights that keeps families together
    Supports protections and a path to citizenship for Dreamers and undocumented immigrants
    Wants more federal resources for immigration courts and assistance for cities welcoming immigrants
    On Israel-Palestine:
    Condemns Israel's "genocidal war" and actions in Gaza, calls for an immediate ceasefire
    Demands an end to Israeli occupation, apartheid, settlements, ethnic cleansing in Palestine
    Criticizes Rep. Andy Kim for voting to send $25 billion more in military aid to Israel
    On the Supreme Court:
    Open to expanding the court to 13 justices, one for each federal district
    Argues it's needed to dilute the influence of right-wing Trump appointees for the next 20 years
    Other key positions:
    Passing a 21st Century Civil Rights Act to combat discrimination
    Raising the federal minimum wage to at least $17/hour, toward a living wage
    Protecting abortion rights and LGBTQ equality from Republican attacks
