Archimedes Screw Kite

- A project kite made by Cherie. The plans were maddeningly condensed. The actual kite needs a hollow tube for the main spar to get stiffness. Finding swivels to use on the bridle lines was a problem. solved by co-opting some stunt kite rubber standoffs into free spinning sleeves. We may do another one. It will be larger than this one and constructed with some differences. Frankly, I was surprised when it flew.
For a first attempt this design flies surprisingly well ! well done Cherie! 👍🏻
Stiffening the center rod made all the difference, Stefaan.
That is fantastic! I'd love to buy one. My kite building is rather primitive. The latest one is a miniature 64 cell tetrahedral made of 96 paper straws but it's very prone to damage. Next one is a variation on the tetrahedral but it's a major fiddle to build.
Great idea from you!

Now that is really cool. Interesting for sure. Anything that spins is neat. This one is really an eye catcher. Wonderful job on this one.
Ken, when this thing is up to speed, it is a blur. It reminds me of a football on crack!
I think it's really really cool. It sucks that it's winter here and we are pretty much grounded.
Still waiting to see that other one! Haha I love this kite and have watched many times
Hi, it's time you tried one of your own. www.kiteplans.org/pln_1602/
Good luck.
glad you guys got out and tried something new for the rest of us to long for... That is an awesome thing!!
photonmom Cherie has another surprise done and one on the drawing board😀😀😀
can't wait...its cold and rain here...will have to fly vicariously for a while...lol..
That really is something different, |I shall watch this space for the next one.
I like things that spin !.
graham vaughan The plans are online. Search Claes kite, Graham.
love it, like the schange to the bridle!
Mr. Claes, I am honored to fly your design. Thank you for creating this design and offering it to the world. The schange to the bridle is my correction for having a soft center spar. This correction eliminates tangles and line wraps. In future I will prepare another kite with a rigid center spar. I will then attempt to follow your plans exactly. Thank you so much for your comment!
Jan Claes Jan, I built with a 3mm solid carbon fiber rod. Next time I'll jse a tube for additional rigidity.
That is certainly an eye catching kite, i have seen footage of a version with inflatable edges, it does look hard to build, can't even work out how you would keep the spiral in it without it springing out straight.
One thought i had for a tail, if you made a three leg support and had three tails revolving behind they would form a spiral pattern which would enhance the effect.
Hi Ian. Today we tried it again with some additional stiffening rods down the middle. We also attached four surveyor's tape tails. It took off and flew like a witch! I like your idea of the spinning tails. I'm already chewing on the idea as I write. Keep in touch!
What a nice Video,well done!
Thanks for the comment Diedrich. We keep trying and flying!
Very interesting, Glenn - I hadn't seen one before. If you scale it up and fit it with a small generator, you might be able to have your own power supply.
Jim Nicholls At least enough to power a Chinese lantern, Jim!
Really interesting kite.
I wonder if adding a keel suspended from the bridle would help with stability. Another option would be a airplane type tail that was on a bearing so that it would not spin.
Excellent ideas, food for thought.
Interesting to say the least, I'd Luv to see a 12 foot version! LoL
🧐👀🤯 nunca vi algo parecido ...increíble cometa 😮😯😲
Hola, busque en Archimedes screw kite para ver videos adicionales. Mantente a salvo amigo mío.
Hi, can you tell me where you bought this kite?
Hello Long. I made it www.kiteplans.org/pln_1602/ Glenn
Well done guys - looks impressive. Time to scale it up next? :)
CirrusRC As soon as Cherie works out the technique for wrinkle free sails, we will give it another go, David.
this is cool! may i know do you share the making tutorial of this kite?

thank you! :)
Hi Glenn, two or four of these, rotating counterwise and combined in one frame could improve both, behaviour and impact. Just a spontaneous idea... ;-)
Michael, I like your idea. You have imagination. I'll give you some additional information to consider. The three sails constituting the screw are fixed to the main spar or axle. The axle rotates along with the sails. Shall the counter-rotating sail be fixed to the same axle or linked by some method to a second axle? If I were to use a second axle, how would I maintain a consistent alignment between the clockwise and counter clockwise sections? If you have more thoughts on the matter, let me know here, or pm me at mitchell93210@gmail.com
Regards, Glenn
Hey Glenn, my idea was the following: A straight number of these kites fitted side by side in a light frame of carbon or glass fibre. A counterwise turning of the left and right kites is of course neccessary for stable flight. The kites should be mounted each with two ball bearings at both ends for easy rotation. This way I think two, four or even perhaps six screws could be combined. I hope my explanation is not too confusing... ;-)
michael22846 That is totally novel! Nobody has that at all! Good job. When Cherie does another, I'll construct such a frame and run tests. Thanks, Michael.
漂亮的轉輪飛的很穩,自己做的,还是多少錢買的?
你好。 仅原型。 需要大量的劳动和完美。 有一个快乐的一天风筝的朋友!
That's too cool!
I wonder how it would do as line laundry.
It works quite well attached to a gkat tail or as laundry. Gomberg kites factory warehouse now has Brasington helixes much like this. Check it out online.

good morning

It does fly. How high can it go?
This will be a little too hard to make. Im from Philippines, Pampanga and its kite season today with the lockdown cause of Covid19. And I only make standard diamond shape kite to fly.
Hi Mark, it does not want to fly high and needs stronger wind. A Malay diamond is a good design.
Nice kite👍
Thanks!
beautiful
Thanks!
thank you for wonderful videos, im new to the kite, about thre years, i never made one by my own, and i foud it disappointing that where i live is plenty of wind, but it is not suitable for flying, but on the mountain Tara, my granddad origin, and by the sea is tottaly different story . . . i found it very relaxing, and i will keep doin it, for sure . . .

Thanks, the more I kite, the greater my appreciation.
@@PanyingPilot yes just bought 2 of the parafoils mini kites and always flew the Gayla bat kites when I was younger inm gonna pick up some of those. Kiyte flying is very peaceful if you really think about it...Thanks for the video I subbed!
@@RHINOTACTICAL Welcome to the group. We are world wide and communicate through UA-cam.
Sir Jim Nicholls, by the way from the Philippines, thanks for your video titled "Prism Flip Kite". And now I've successfully replicated its design.
And Sir Glenn, although the design is based on the original PDF description of Sir Jan Claes which says "combination of sentinel and Archimedes screw", can I make Sentinel Kite first then slightly skew it in 120° or even less just to replicate such design?
Model it with paper first, then proceed. Glenn
As Filipino style, I'm going to use plastic bag and broomsticks but I'm still utilize its property of being ultra lightweight. Should I proceed?
@@masterofone360 You are clever. If you succeed, please post a video .
So, should I proceed with my idea of using plastic bag as sails and broomsticks as straight and helical spars, or it just makes the situation worse?
@@masterofone360 The problem for you is the plastic bag. It will stretch. It can not be put under tension. Your spars which provide shape for the fins must either be pre-formed or very thin and flexible, but not so thin that they break or splinter. The main shaft of the kite must be a stiff spar that will not bend. Your biggest challenge is going to be the top and bottom axle bearings. You will have to invent a way of allowing the kite to spin but not allowing the kite bridle to also spin. Failure means the kite and bridle will tightly wrap up and squeeze the kite, crushing it.
pretty kite glenn
