I live with my family on a 2 ha (~5 acre) homestead in Southern Finland. Our home is over 300-year old heritage-listed house, marked as a museum in property register and we are learning the skills necessary to restore and maintain it. When we moved here from the city, we fell in love not only with the house but with the overgrown, wild remnants of a garden. Half of our property is a wildlife protection area and in 2023 we're starting maintanence work under a national traditional rural biotope saving program.

Greeting from California! I truly enjoyed your sharing of your garden and look forward to seeing it in the spring. You are very lucky that you do not have to water your garden. Growing up in Minnesota, we didn't do much watering either, even though we had lots of flowers, trees and a vegetable garden, as we did have rain during the spring and summer and alot of snow in the winter. Here is California, I have to water every 3 days, or I would have no grass, no trees and no plants!! I have 1/3 of an acre and have planted many crepe myrtle trees, chipalta tree, redwoods, and many different types of flowers. I also have peaches, lemons, blueberries, strawberries and raspberries and grow a vegetable garden start in the spring. I very much enjoy, as I call it "playing in the dirt". I feel so calm and very connected to nature and it is a very wonderful way to nurture the sole. If you have any sort of stress or problem........just go play in the dirt........and you will feel so much better! One is NEVER too old to play in the dirt........so just enjoy! Thank you for sharing your garden. You are a beautiful sole!
I love the concept of playing in the dirt! I also feel like I am creating something as part of nature, helping it as it helps me. I can imagine how dry and hot a Californian weather is for a garden 😅

Thank you. Your garden is beautiful. I am excited to see it in the spring, summer and fall. I agree we do not need to separate edibles from decorative plants. Mix them all together. I also love your idea of growing more so there is enough for the wildlife to eat with leftovers for you and your family. ❤️

I love it too! From afar it looks like any grass lawn (when not flowering) but when you get close you notice the incredible diversity of plants that grow in there. 🌱🌱🌱🌱

I love that you called peonies (pionit?) “grandma flowers”. I dug some up from among the weeds where my grandma’s garden once was and now they thrive in my own. Daffodils too, narsissit. I’m enjoying your journey and love how “down to earth” you are.
Yes,grandma' flowers are great! The plants have proven to withstand ANYTHING and like you said, can survive even if left totally on their own. 🌱😍

Good point about there being no such thing as too much food in the garden. Things unpicked or unharvested aren't wasted, they're just going back to nature 😊
Exactly! It's like wild berries or mushrooms in the forest - nature don't think it is waste of time to grow all that food. Abundance is never wrong when it come to food and nature. 😁

your lawn is a bit like our lawn in our front yard. We do get the grass cut fairly regularly but flowers like those white daisies always come back. In some areas we have these very pretty blue star shaped flowers which grow from bulbs. I don't think they are native but I like them.

Beautiful. Thank you for sharing your garden and talking about the many fruit trees that grow well for you there. Another that you might try, is fig. I’m able to keep it alive near Death Valley. Our winters get to about 20°F. Cheers! 😊

I live in Central Texas and we have the same issue with living on rocks so I'm curious to see your root cellar. Can't wait to see what your garden looks like as it starts to wake up in the spring!!
They have build the root cellar in a natural gap between one cliff and another, so it is just a lucky coincidence that there is a natural formation for a root cellar to be build on. 😅

I can't wait to see your garden evolve through the coming seasons. As you head into Spring we are heading into Autumn, so the chance to cut some overgrown plants back without fear of snakes or sunburn. It seems like wherever we are in the world there are animals that want to enjoy the produce of our gardens before we get the chance. For me it's kangaroos, eating new growth on my fruit trees and helping themselves to the vegetables. We have a large old mulberry tree that the colourful birds (rosellas) enjoy the fruit of. Some years we don't get any mulberries. It's not a bad thing to have bird and animals visit the garden though, it can help to keep the biodiversity alive.
Yes, I love having native animals in the garden! (White-tailed deer are actually not native to Finland and the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation is promoting that it would be added to a list of invasive species so it could be more controlled). Ooh, mulberries are delicious! 😋😋

I also have a partly wild garden in the outside of Vienna.
Here I suffer from extensive harvesting around. So even my green iland is not enough for birds and bees to live from. We have to deal with lots of other problems here
You are young and wise you surely will succeed with your dreams.

Yes, we do have bird flu, all the poultry must kept inside during the migration period which varies a bit from year to year. It starts usually in Feb/March and ends somewhere in April/May. More to come about meadow management 😍🌱

I live in Wisconsin, USA which is one of the colder areas of my country, it is gardening zone 5b, I grew up on the east coast and I am surprised to learn now many plants that I am familiar with will not grow here. Thanks for sharing about your lovely property and looking forward to seeing it in different seasons.
Yes, I can imagine it took a bit of time to get used to a different growing climate and finding the right plants for that zone. But you can get wonderful gardens in cold climates as well 😍

We just bought a 3 acre piece of land. I am somewhat lost in how to garden it right now, so I am excited to see what you have and what you do. Love your videos!
I've had two professional gardeners to visit my garden and give me their smart advice, I recommend to do the same! Having a pro to come for a consultation visit is much cheaper than ordering a whole garden plan but will get you started on the right tracks. 😍🌱
What about licorice plant? When I think of Finland sometimes I think of salmiakki and levain polka. I really like I used to go to a bakery that had a gooseberry and cream stuffed macaron pastry that was topped with other pretty fruit like raspberry. I like the deer in my town a lot though they do look kinda stressed. It would also be pretty to grow oats. I wonder if the heritage council that overlooks that your house be kept in good condition would allow you a small covered area to grow some vegetables away from the deer.
I woul love to grow liquorice but unfortunately it isn't a very hardy plant ang only grow in warmer climates, but we have a native fern that has the same liquorice taste to it's roots. It grows wild but you're not allowed to pick it unless you have landowners permission. We do have some growing on our cliffs though 😋

I have a question about the sheep :) You said "when the sheep arrive". Where are they now? How much work is it to keep in the summer?
We are renting sheep for the summer from a sheep farm nearby and this will be our first summer with them, so we'll see how it goes! 😅

I see you have ducks. I love ducks. I had ducks when we had our farm years ago. I guess you have to watch out for predators like foxes, eh? What wild animals are around that might eat your ducks?
Ducks are great! 😍 There are plenty of different predators in the area but so far we lost only two ducks to them. We close the ducks in for the night and that keeps them safe. The duck breeder we got them from, told us that, even if we'd build a bunker for them, the predators will always find a way. So as long as we don't have an invasion of predators we're fine 😁
