Lube is applied to the inner roller and between the links where the rings are, the camera angle made it look like spraying the outer surface but it is not, just optical illusion of the camera angle.

Anyway, yes this stuff is not cheap, but with kerosene you need to wash it away before lube, this shown here does not require washing. Just for a quick clean up if you are travelling far or need a quick clean up. Different purposes..
