  • In this video I test whether a 1.4 teleconverter works well with a zoom lens for wildlife photography. I use a Nikon 1.4x teleconverter with a 200-500mm Nikon zoom lens. I test this combination is both good and poor light. I show the images taken with and without the teleconverter and crop in to 100% to check sharpness. I also test autofocus speed and accuracy.

The Nikon D500 and the 200-500mm lens is my wildlife combo, which I used handheld. This video gave me the confidence to try this combo for extra reach. I have been photographing small Buffleheads on a pond. They are so small that the extra reach of a teleconverter would be helpful if Image Quality was not compromised. I am looking at the Nikon TC 1.4 III. There is so much negative information about using the TC with the 200-500mm. It was refreshing to see another perspective. Thank you.

Great video Steve. I have a 1.4x which I used to use all the time when I moved to a full frame camera but then stopped using it when I thought the images looked a little soft. When the light is right I think I will try it again and see what happens. Cheers Keith

Thanks alot for this video. Its very informative. I own the 200-500 f/5.6 and i've thought about getting the TC1,4 but i've heard so many stories about "dont use TC's - they are not worth it - they make your pictures soft...and so on" - It might be worth to reconsider.

Hi Steve, Thanks for the video on teleconverters, found it very interesting, great video, now I bought a teleconverter Nikon TC-20E 11 2X for my Nikon Ed 70-200mm 1:2.8G lense and I have not used it enough, so this stirred me into having a go at trying it out and comparing it on my D810 and D750, I have looked at the shots in the camera's viewfinder and the looked ok, so I will download them on to my laptop and have look, I will let you know, the last time I used it I ran out of my battery very quickley.

hi Steve, I always use a 1.4 converter on my Canon 1DX Mk11and 100-400mm USM Mk11 lens, I don’t think there’s much loss in quality or AF, and let’s be honest how many photos don’t need some kind of post production? if it’s a touch of work on shadows or highlights you might as well make the slight amount of adjustment it might need on sharpening or noise reduction, for the extra distance gained on a full frame camera I definitely think it’s worth using, it 100% doesn’t work so well on my 90D for sure and it does affect AF and image quality more. but then it’s got 32.5 mp on a small sensor and doesn’t perform well in low light situations so it’s to be expected 👍 cheers Terry 📷🦅😊

Nice work Steve. I've got a Sigma 1.4 Teleconverter for use with my Sigma 50-500mm but the AF doesn't operate because it narrows the aperture to f/9. I've tried it on my 500mm PF and because that is f/5.6 aperture at its widest like your 200-500mm, the aperture narrowed to f/8 and I was able to use AF. Unfortunately I deleted the images in error so I haven't been able to compare them like you did. I don't think the Sigma version will be as good as the Nikon Teleconverter either. Which version of the Nikon 1.4 Teleconverter were you using?

Great video Steve. Why is the colour on the first swans so much better than the ones with the converter? Also I thought there was a slight loss of detail on the back of the swans neck in the first photos with the converter, I don't know what your thoughts are.

Amazing video thank you for sharing your experience. Did you experiment with lower zoom lenses like 18-135, 55-200/300 etc.

very informativ video, i have the same set-up, D500, 200-500 and 1,4 telecon. can you tell me the exif data on the swan and flying seagull pics. taken with converter? because i think you are getting much sharper pics with it than i am, and my gear are adjustet as one, at Nikon in Denmark, and without the converter i get good sharp pics.

Steve does adding the 1.4 TC to the Nikon D500 with the Nikon 200-500mm lens drop the f5.6 to 8, or do you have to manually set the f stop to f.8? Have you increased your f stop above f8 if there are multiple birds you are trying to capture? Thanks!
