Lived in Gorleston from 1964 till/84. Used to be a large outdoor swimming pool where the bandstand now is. I remember there was pride if you got a pool season ticket allowing VIP access to its fabulous interior ( I got my 25 yards swimming certificate at the pool). Worked on the parks and gardens for a couple of years during 1975/76 the great drought. Fun times. Gorleston went through a rough patch and was neglected and unkept, then a renaissance back to the pretty seaside town. Ended up as an entertainer and worked the Ocean Room and the Pavillion many times. Thanks for the nostalgic walk around some of my old haunts.
Absolutely loved this film Tim. Thank you so much for doing it. I absolutely loved living in Gorleston in the early 60s and still miss the magical life we had there. Your film has brought back many memories. I learnt to swim in the open air pool that used to be where the bandstand is now. My class went at 9am in the morning, in the summer term, walking from my primary school (Stradbroke Junior) and the water was invariably freezing at that time in the morning. We very soon learnt to look at the daily water temperature ( on a blackboard at the pay kiosk) on arrival to get an idea how frigid the water would be. At that time the hall adjacent was called The Floral Hall, ( I recall a riot of coloured flowers around it) and they did afternoon dances. I heard my first Beatles song played then ( I wanna hold your hand) as I was swimming in the pool with friends on a hot summer afternoon, and the big Floral Hall sliding doors were pushed open. My little brother used to sail his toy yacht in the yacht pond, and one Sunday pushed it out too far, overbalanced, and ended up in the water. We had to go home in a hurry! The following Sunday we went again, and my dad was remarking to mother ‘ exactly just this time last week ‘you know who’ fell in the pond’ when we heard a splash....and he had done it again!
We visited a couple of months ago for the very first time. Such a lovely place. Free seafront parking, lovely Pier Hotel and beach. Also went into Ocean Bay amusements shown near the start of your video. Absolutely brilliant with old school levels of service from lovely family owners and very fair machines. They were also offering a £12 bag of 2ps for the pushers for only £10. You have won before you even start playing !. Superb value and well worth a visit.
Thanks Tim for another great video. Forgot how beautiful Gorleston is I felt my nanny was watching this video with me Bless her it was her favourite place ever. Me and my husband Have decided later in the year we are going camping as close As we can to Gorleston. Thanks so much you should have your own TV program on television.👍👍👍
Gorleston always felt like a hidden gem. Great Yarmouth would get all the attention and we had our little secret in Gorleston. That's changed now, sadly. Gorleston is changing rapidly. Some of the best memories of my life are on that beach and pier with my dad and brother. Would do anything to be able to experience it all again.
I've been going to Yarmouth for a few years...but it was only last year when i actually decided to have a look at Gorleston...and what a lovely little place, thanks for taking us there in these difficult times....
In 1978, I was an 13yr American teenager and lived a couple of streets off the beach right by the tennis and lawn bowling courts. We used to ride bikes and skate down the driveway to the beach by the gardens. I left lots of skin and blood on that pavement. Still have lots of photos from the 70's of my parents in the Ocean Room. I seem to remember an American or Petroleum Club there back then also. Can't wait to go back and visit!!! Thanks for the memories.
Great walk, Tim. These first videos that you did in the middle of the coronavirus restrictions are like a time capsule already. Hope that all the attractions etc are now back open in Gorleston.
Happy days! I lived there as a boy from '58 to '67 and loved it. Lots of changes of course, when I was there, you could actually jump off the (lower) prom on to the beach. The drop was nowhere near as big. It was great to see the yacht pond revived, spent a lot of time sailing my model yacht there and rounded off the day with an ice cream from Della Spina yummy! Lol Many thanks for a wonderful trip down memory lane.
Just came across this video by chance and loved it. I lived in Gorleston, quite near Marine Parade when I was a kid in the 60s. Astonished and happy to see that after all that time very little has changed.
I’m so glad that I have found your videos to sit back and enjoy watching. I have very fond memories of my holidays as a child in and around Great Yarmouth and every year I always try to make a day visit or have a few nights stay. Thank you for sharing your lovely videos. I’m hoping to have a few nights stay later on this year.
Hi Tim. In 1977 we was on holiday with our two young son's . We got on a ferry boat across the river to gorleston on sea . The ferry went from outside the old birds eye factory in vermouth.we went to the old walled town of gorleston, we found a old pottery and next door was fish smoke house.
Hi I've come over from Kate macabes channel and really enjoying seeing parts of the country I've not visited. It all looks beautiful and I'm off to binge watch your videos now x

What an amazing video! Love Gorleston and this video shows some of my favourite places (was part of the "Gorleston boat model club" for few years. Stopped because of lack of time due to my job) so, I was frequently at the pond! ❤️
Thank you Tim, Kate sent me, I spent a lot of time in Gorleston as a child and spent most of it in the swimming pool where the band stand is you showed. And on what we called the little beach (near harbour wall) and sailed my red yacht in the boating lake and played I. The kiddies pool but it’s different to when I was a child it was just blue in the bottom and had a very small gradient. Glad to see the big arch is there with the gardens and the building use to have the toilets in. My uncle Donnie was chairman of the bowls club he played many years. I will enjoy following you as I like going with Kate on virtual walks we are confined to the house shielding for now. So many happy memories thank you Anni
Many happy memories of family holidays here in the 60s and 70s. We usually stayed in a lovely old building on Marine Parade, converted into holiday flats, Scroby House. Now once more a private house. Parents usually booked the flat at the top, overlooking Marine Parade with fab views out to sea. Great vid Tim!
Loved the video buddy! Used to Holiday there in the 80's with my Parents when I was a Child - Still have very Fond memories. Was blown away when I saw it featured in 'Yesterday'!!
I used to live on Clarence Road in the mid 2000's and have appeared at the Pavillion. I'm back up near Manchester now and watching your video was not only a trip down memory lane, but also a little holiday. Thank you.

I really hope to visit again sometime soon. I hope you stick around this beautiful area. :) Great work again Tim
Thanks for another great video. Easy to see why Norfolk is such a popular holiday destination. Been clubbing down at the Ocean Rooms a couple of times.
Visited Gorleston on sea yesterday. Weather was perfect. 😎🌞. First time visiting after watching your video Tim👍 My wife and 4 years old daughter very much enjoyed themselves. The beach wasnt very busy compared to Yarmouth etc.. my daughter and i had a dip in the sea . Plenty of places to eat. But we had had a small picnic by the sea. Definitely will visit again 😊. Hi, lived there in 1946 until 1956, the ocean rooms used to be the Floral Hall and also had an outdoor pool, popular for dancers i remember watching the Joe Loss band there, there used to be a ferry boat( to Yarmouth (rowing boat 22passengers some standing ) it was used by workers going to Birds Eye factory, and also Erie Resistor, also used by Scottish Fisher girls. My parents lived there until the late 90’s. Love going back.
hi there, hoppy here, the beach across the river is called spending beach me and the lads used to fish off there for years until the offshore company halliburton moved in and walled it all off, typical, used to be used by lots of anglers, also used in the old days for boats in trouble to run up on for repairs
Once again thank you Tim, really fascinating and well researched docu-vid - makes you want to visit when you know what to see and look for. Hoping that the Gov will invest in these wonderful locations - so much possibility
Hi Tim, new subbie here from Kate's channel. I live in the US and just absolutely love your videos. They make me feel like I'm on vacation. Looking forward to watching your videos ❤💚💜💙💛
@@WalkWithMeTim I'm in Southern California. I am born and raised here. And man do I miss it. So watching your videos brings back a lot of happy memories...looking forward to more ❤💚💜💙💛
Loving your videos, just binge watching them, finding them very informative, and looking forward to visiting all these places. We’ve not long only moved to Norfolk. Going forward, I would find it useful if you could tell us if the beaches are dog friendly, I realise a lot are not, but some of the more remote ones may be. Kate directed me your way. Thank you.
Another excellent vlog Tim, we really like Gorleston and the beach is stunning, we love walking on millionaires row as you call it and always make a point of having lunch at Cliffs Hotel 👍
Thanks Again! Could you do a Short one of Hopton please, as the Beach there is also Lovely. I can’t believe how clear and Blue, all the Seas Are looking now! Xx
Think you could get to that little beach before the outer harbour was built, spent many hours round Gorleston and had many take aways from the the pnes you showed, love Gorleston town to. There used to be a ferry across the harbour, no idea when it stopped. Gorleston theater is beautiful inside and out and the staff in the pier hotel are so friendly.
Few hundred on the beach! 6,500! Largest number of extras ever in Europe. The work on quayside is to strengthen the sea defences. Anyone can visit the Coastwatch volunteers btw The splashed will reopen, they remove the working parts in the winter. It will reopen. Love your video.
I was in Yarmouth the other week travelled round Lowestoft, girl Eaton and potters resort where I stayed, drive through gorlston couldn’t see anything other than like a dock
Mates and me used to go to the pool where the bandstand now is every Saturday morning n the summer when I was a kid. Had a Horlicks and cheese and tomato rolls for lunch. I personally know to of the performers in that Pavilion poster (claim to fame) and had some wild times at the Ocean Room in my youth, nothing to do with playing bingo, though. Great vid
Fantastic video once again Tim I can see your channel hitting the big time. Are you planning to do any more videos on Caister in the near future as would love to see more of there. Keep the videos coming and let’s see your channel grow more by the day. Much Respect
Lol Thanks samuel, I just love showing everyone how beautiful the east coast is ... I'm going to when they open on a Wednesday do a video walk of all the holiday parks starting with the original holiday camp caister 😃 and see if people wanna watch them
@ 3.27 the beach along sea wall was known as children's beach since it was safe for them to bath, also i am pleased that the beach is back its very much as it was during the 1960,s without beach huts.
@@WalkWithMeTim not on the actual pier wall, say from the boat pond to tea house i would say. There should be some footage around that time on u tube, we even have pictures of me and brothers in red blazers at the bridge gardens. Happy times gorleston even had its own station then. IT was a perfect bucket and spade seaside resort, the beach huts should return and pony rides like the old days.
Just found your channel. Absolutely fantastic! Thank you I’ve watched every single one and loved them. I holiday there several times a year until this year lol I’ve driven around all of the places I’ve shown apart from two of them. I’ll be exploring them next time I’m there. I don’t know if you can help but I’m disabled and can’t find a way to the beach with disabled access. If you could make a video on acceptable places that would be fantastic, also where you can and can’t take dogs would be a good idea to I think. I can’t wait to watch your next video.
Thanks ian , hope you subscribed... I believe in gt yarmouth you can get special wheel chairs to go down on the beach .and mist are dog friendly apart from may to sep in yarmouth and gorleston 😃
really good pice of film for Gorleston missed a few historical points under the band stand and swimming pool that was there before. try and fly the drone from the end of Gorleston prom to Hopton as a record of coastal defence line

Great vid
Lol cheese and tomato sandwiches 😋
@@WalkWithMeTim Rolls no less, not just sandwiches! Height of culture in the early 70's lol

thanks for watching Anne! where do you live now then?
@@WalkWithMeTim I live in Scotland on the west coast
@ 3.27 the beach along sea wall was known as children's beach since it was safe for them to bath, also i am pleased that the beach is back its very much as it was during the 1960,s without beach huts.
It had beach huts up there???
@@WalkWithMeTim not on the actual pier wall, say from the boat pond to tea house i would say.
There should be some footage around that time on u tube, we even have pictures of me and brothers in red blazers at the bridge gardens.
Happy times gorleston even had its own station then.
IT was a perfect bucket and spade seaside resort, the beach huts should return and pony rides like the old days.
Just found your channel.
Absolutely fantastic!
Thank you
I’ve watched every single one and loved them.
I holiday there several times a year until this year lol
I’ve driven around all of the places I’ve shown apart from two of them.
Walk With Me Tim
I definitely subscribe lol
That’s fantastic!
I’ll enquire about wheelchairs that can go on the beech.
Thanks again
Keep safe
