Dan, I've been in Baguio for a week now. Leaving all the divisiveness of the United States behind is a tremendous load off my shoulders. The Vagabond Buddha membership was key to overcoming many of my concerns. All I can say is Thank-you for opening my eyes to the endless possibilities that today's world has to offer, if we just are willing to come out of our "comfort zone". It does take a leap of faith but afterwards, most of us will actually figure out that our "comfort zone" wasn't really all that comfortable. Despite walking up and down lots of hills in thinner air, Baguio is quickly becoming my new "comfort zone". Thanks again!

How are you dealing with the mass of humanity and crowds in Baguio? I’m on the central coast of CA where the weather is very mild with low humidity. I’ve been considering Baguio for the weather but also like nature and “quiet time” and am concerned about the crowds I’ve seen in many videos of Baguio-especially during the summer months.
@JimMillsCSLC I'm from San Francisco and moved here last August. Baguio residents stay away from session road (that's what you see on social media) I live In a very quite subdivision in the hills. There is traffic although if your retired resident of Baguio you will have already gotten over the tourist spots because like us you can visit all of them on a Tuesday morning when they open and truly appreciate it. Other than that the weather is the best in the whole country.

Well said Dan. It's really Stoicism 101. Focus on the things we can control and be indifferent about the things out of our control. Then we must have the courage to put this into practice.
Dan, you have inspired me in a huge way. I used to do this and allow outside issues I had no control over to occupy my mind. I wasn’t a victim rather I was trying to change minds. I learned that was futile. I now give me full effort to retiring overseas to slow travel like you. I have to continually try new plants to see for myself how they grow. This year I added peas (!!) and mesclun lettuce (!!!!) - I had to do it (Put my foot down). No one else grows these locally!! Thanks for your clear and cutting edge voice. In this day of "muddled voices", you have a huge impact on our world.

Very good points is this video. Especially about energy focused on what you have no control over takes time away from the things you do. Not to many people pinpoint this so clearly.
Especially these days. People are focused on noise they have no control over so they can avoid real choices or real actions they can take in their life each moment. The sad part is, it corrupts there mind all day long (for months and years) because they are not filtering what they allow into their ears and eyes.

Thanks for the awesome video, Dan..! I've enjoyed watching your videos for quite some time, but this one really resonates with me.
I moved to Thailand just over a year ago, and I love it here. However, roughly six months ago, I began paying more and more attention to the politics back in my home country of the U.S. and I found myself walking around angry, in a country full of the most laid-back and chill people in the world. I soon realized my blood pressure was elevated by the negative political news I was getting via social media and UA-cam.
I was literally letting the toxic politics over 8000 miles away spoil my new home.
Anyhow, I found the solution to my issues was for me to cut off all social media and block the political UA-cam channels, and I now feel so much better. I no longer stress over things I have no control over, and I wake up grateful every day to still be living in paradise.

This is how I look at it: Think 10 to 20 years back. How many world events that happened back then are you still worried about now? So the things you worry about now will mostly be irrelevant in the future.

You hit the nail on the head again, Dan. I'm reading a brilliant book right now by James Allen, As a Man Thinketh. Chapter two (Effect of Thought on Circumstances) cautions the reader about staying focused only on what you want (and nothing negative). I haven't watched the news for years. I killed my TV years ago.

You are so right Dan. The Bible has already told us to expect what we are seeing in the world. That stuff is in Yah's hands and although we have that wisdom from the word, we need not worry about it. The main thing is seeking to hear from YHWH to know where he wants us to be and doing his will. That sets us free. I know he will lead my husband and I to the best outcome if I follow his guidance. Dan, you are wise beyond your age. Thank you for telling me what I have been witnessing. It's a confirmation to control my bias. I do not wish fellow countrymen to come to my favorite places in S.E. Asia, unless they adopt the culture. I like these places and people as they are. I do not want to change these places and people - they are perfect in the way they are.

The biggest threat to overseas retirement is the CBDC that might stop money going out of the US/EU. You should at least look into that problem.
Feel free to share a reference of some kind that supports your fear. Electronic money has been around for 100 years. That is how import export is funded.

Dan and Qiang, make the best videos I've seen. I moved to Bangkok in 2003 to learn Muay Thai. I was and I am still too young to retire and I have made more mistakes than I care to admit. I wish that I had Dan's videos to help me chart my way. I had a site called Bootstraps and other backpacker sites in the early days of the internet. I am 52 and Dale's letter is very interesting. I too have taught English but I make my money as a personal trainer and martial arts instructor. I'll let Dan and Qiang give the advice but if I could impart some wisdom it would be this; watch your finances and keep a nest egg somewhere. Don't be afraid but find something you can do to earn income, teaching English is viable but do it your way and the best you can. Learn the language! my biggest regret is not speaking fluently in Thai, Korean, or Vietnamese. Next country language classes will be essential.

Good video. My Daughter, who is very successful, gave up looking at the news two years ago. She concentrates on her family and work. Sure has worked for her.

Always try to maintain an internal locus of control
Sounds like Dale is like a lot of people he’s done pretty well with the markets and investments of that sort which we have no control at all. One moment, you made a ton and the next minute you lost a ton it’s just too easy to say you could lose it all overnight. Dale probably doesn’t have any kind of safety net such as retirement entitlements just the markets and also no healthcare. So what I think you’re saying, Dan is to find investments where you do have control in like your own business and take some real estate and get some real estate investments where you can be creative and control your risk reward where you feel safe. And the number one thing that anyone can do is to take care of your health and eat right and exercise. If you do that you’re cost-of-living will be very low not to mention the quality life. I’ve always admired your program because you’ve done just that. Keep inspiring us , thank you
Brother you are "nuts on" as some of us savages would say. I'm guilty of everything you covered here. Which is silly, given that as a young pup I was very well traveled. Doing so well in career after career, I kept also building sandcastles of safety and comfort around a "someday" strategy.
I got a Masters' course in Letting Go, we'll leave it at that, which brought to my urgent attention that the grand clock is not waiting for the right time, nor set of circumstances, which we think is appropriate. So I just did it. Started it. Got rid of everything I didn't lose. And it's f*cken liberating.

Those are astute words, indeed. However, one could argue that the aforementioned mindset was precisely the same as those violin players had as they continued to play their instruments as the Titanic continued to sink, for instance, America’s eminent demise as a world power, whereas Communist China continues to rise. As a result, had they talked among themselves, hence bitching, and formulated a plan, they would have been alive during that time. In conclusion, positivity is paramount, however effective communication is just as important.
I enjoy bitching about the things going on back in the USA while enjoying a worry free life in Thailand. It’s the perfect medium 😅. It’s the perfect amount of stress to keep me just above the completely stress free level.
Be careful it is a slippery slope especially if you start hanging out with others that enjoy it. Victim clubs can really mess with your minds. :-)

The pessimistic mindset is rampant. Its easy to fall prey to it. I focus on these types of subjects to keep me focused.
The reason for this level of anxiety is directly because of the IMMEDIACY of social media and news online since 2000. It's because the big issues affect US through economics, healthcare, etc. How can we focus when we face lockdowns, pandemics, 15 minute cities.....??
Your government will have a hard time ruining your life if you focus on your life instead of your government.

I think a lot of this is a side effect of smart phones and too much internet, I am very mindful to limit my screen time and get out in the peace of nature.
Wisdom. Also, try to steer clear of conspiracy theorists. They get wound up tight and have a hard time getting their feet back on the ground after they head down that road. The cost is much higher than any benefit.

Fear keeps us where we are at. I am flying out to Chiang Mai permanently on July 1st. I thought setting up that retirement was a pipe dream until I just decided I was doing it no matter what. Once I set my mind that I was jist going to do it, I found it was mich simpler than my head told me it would be. I hate to use corporate logos, but like Nike says, "Just do it!" I did, and my dream of living my life in Southeast Asia, a dream I've had since first going in the Navy in the 80s, is finally coming true. Sometimes I think it's laziness that puts us into the mindset that I can't because "x" or "y". Change is scary, and any excuse to not do it. The problem is that leads to a miserable life. We can live our dreams, all it takes is just a little determination and the courage to face those fears!
When I got to the door on the airplane and looked how far below the earth was, I just jumped. I was crazy fearful, but I promised myself I would jump when I got up there. The truth is, there was more danger in the car ride to the airport than making that jump.
