Thanks, this is now my favorite video ever !!!!!!! I have a lovely story about my own encounter visiting a home and being invited to play their Shruti Box to begin a group evening of living room music in the heart of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, southern Spain. Unforgettable !!!
This instrument is so beautiful and your words and humming are so resonant and inspiring for those of us thinking about how to create and bring more healing music and vibrations to ourselves and others.
Thank you very much for this demonstration. I've been looking for this instrument for like 6 years and it was until recently that I found out that this type of music is called drone. I was realizing that in meditation music I was hearing a very spiritual hum in the background which nobody would identify or care about but that hum (drone) was everything for me and finally I found out which instrument produces it.
On the free Plum Village app, there is a wonderful deep relaxation track in which Brother Phap Lin offers a guided relaxation exercise followed by playing his cello and shruti box. I believe it's a "male" box, very deeply resonant. It's worth seeking out for those who resonate with this sound energy.
I posted the same comment on the UA-cam by Ixchel Prisma on the shruti. My upstairs neighbor, who sings, I believe was accompanying herself on a shruti box, and the sound was out of this world. I didn't know its name, but I'm sure I saw one used at a concert of Indian music, back around 1990, presented at the great World Music Institute on White Street in NYC. It was a shorter, squatter box than what we see here, and finished in some black material - if you closed it up you could mistake for a portable typewriter - but this was the sound. A woman played it, accompanied by a tabla player and something that was not exactly a sitar. She played constantly, before the "beginning", and even in the intervals between "ragas". The remarkable thing was that this created the impression that the music itself emerged from the drone, as a universe emerges from the void, or as life emerges from life, and as each raga ended, it faded away and was again consumed by the drone. It was thrilling to hear. I don't recall what sort of Indian music it was - i.e. regional - but it's odd that I haven't seen the shruti box more often. I've attended several performances of Indian music, but this was the only time I saw a shruti. Breathe!!! Thanks also for your video.
My Guess: It was a shorter, squatter box than what we see here, and finished in some black material - Harmonium something that was not exactly a sitar - Veena
I found your video link on chandrakantha dot com website, relating to the use of drone instruments in raag. Thanks so much for the demo. I think, of all the instruments, the drones are the most therapeutic. When I was a child, I stuck my finger into a live light socket. Immediately I became mentally alert, keenly aware and physically incapable of moving, yet totally relaxed (but not limp). The calmness and clarity of mind I was experiencing was in stark contrast to the panic of my mother and sister, who were trying to figure out what to do. The drone instruments produce the exact same effect on me... and I LIKE IT! LOL! Getting electrocuted (at low amperage) is not an entirely unpleasant experience. :))) But still, I recommend the use of drone instruments to achieve that calming effect. Om Shanti, Kalani Das.
Goog Morning Kalani congratulation for your explication , can you tell me please the exact model you are playing in the video and where can I buy exactly ? hugs from Roma, Marcello
Me throughout this video: Umm...a suitcase? How does it even work musically? ...oh! It has a bellow! But still, how does it work? ...here we go, it inflates...here's the sound! ...Oh god...Oh my...It's beautiful!
Poke Runyon brought me here... After he summoned me with a Shruti box and Enochian Magick from outer hidden dimensional realms. Time for the new aeon friends.
Well they sound terrific I think I can sing with this thing for sure only question is where to get at Amazon or at the didgeridoo project in New York or the didge project in New York and holy wow you can get a pedal for it for $300 that's so much money for a pedal but I'm sure it works good
Please please please make a video of you singing over it. I really want to sing with you. I just want to improvise with someone. My soul is longing for it.
Hello, beautiful channel, please could you tell me if it's possible to change the positions of the keys while playing the instrument, as to create a progression please?
You have a beautiful song/voice ♡ thank you for sharing this!! Do you continually pump the shruti for the sound quality you made? I watched another video and there were audible start & stops of their box unlike when you play yours here. Its fluid and I didn't even know you had to pumb the back watching you play this bc your hand barely moves. My mother is gifiting me one and I'm just discovering this instrument, would love to learn more from you! Such a beautiful example on this.
Thank you. I think you can play it however works for you and your music, but yes, I usually continue to pump it as needed for a consistent sound level and tone.
Well people these things sound cool and I just now ordered one from the didge project in New York it is $400 plus $50 for shipping. Does anyone want to hear what I think of it when I get it or hear what it sounds like for me
Thank you very much. This helped me learn a bit more as I just got one! Would you have tutorials online? I'd really like to learn how to play this more. Would there be a chart that shows which notes are on the shruti?
That overtone singing was incredible
That overtone gave me chills, nice.
INDEED!

We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.
Absolutely amazing....Will it be possible to play medieval drone music on this box??
Mind blown! Great introduction
One would be lucky to have a friend like Kalani in their life.
Really fascinating. Thank you lovely thing to do - to take it to disabled people etc. Well done!
Thanks for this info, how cool! How is the note held? Are you slowly squeezing the 'bellows' side?
great video! Thank you for that. The overtone singing is always great...
Was on the fence to buy one and this video just did it! Especially loved the male/female Dad jokes ;)

do you serve mushroom along with your wonderful overtone at your therapeutic music sessions ?
I was thinking throat singing too. I learned it about 5 years ago.
Im curious to know where and how you learned overtone singing
Beautiful sound! What size and brand is your shruti box?
Can you please make a video how to properly do overtone singing?
Simple and nice explanation. Thanks a lot :)!
Love the video! thanks for sharing. Should I ask you a good quality Shruti box to buy?
Sir the way you humming is so secial. May I ask how to learn that stuff? Is it possible selflearn? Or what's the name?
Is it possible to change the notes as you are singing a mantra, like if it was an Harmonium?
Are you doing anything to the instrument to actually maintain the sound once you open the bellows?
do you teach overtone ?
Rose Moon check out Miroslav grosser on UA-cam ;-) his tutorials are awesome.
@@giovannibortoluzzi1384 thanks for the tip.

Hi, I know I am replying quite late. The Shruti box is available in amazon.es.
Wow, cool. I play piano, but paid a jaw drum today. Next week a Kalimba, and maybe later this thing.

Nice!
How do you learn the notes?
If you learn what pitch they keys represent in one octave on a piano keyboard, you know the notes.
