Fantastic job brother. I've been a leather crafter for about 20 years and THAT is one of the funnest things to carve and tool. Doesn't matter if its human or otherwise. Really great job and awesome background music
Fantastic job, I couldn't stop watching! To the man that said he didn't want to sound like a cranky old man.....watch and you could learn something new. We got to see different tools used for different looks. When watching a you tube video, if you disagree with what you are seeing, stop watching. How about some encouraging words for this dude who has the guts to not only create, but to video it and share it with the world. Keep doing what you're doing, you do it well!
Man you're a true artist. The songs are great, the work is also amazing. I'm so jealous of you. RESPECT! I want to learn both guitar and leathercraft... \m/
great work, but how bout you tell your viewers what the tools are that you're using? beveler? pear shader? camouflage tool? consider that some of your viewers have no knowledge of the craft and are watching to learn, just saying
foothillselectrical maybe, i found the video while looking into how tool leather and knowing what tools he used and seeing how the tools are used to make the image is 95%of what i wanted to see.
I tried not to read your comment with a snotty condescending voice in my head, but despite my best efforts that’s all I heard. Maybe you were just trying to be helpful by making that comment. Idk. Peace and love.
That die is too dark? Maybe the camera can't catch the contrast but... before the "antique" shade the picture was much more visible. Shouldn't the color make it "pop out" more noticeably, rather than blurring it all into one, dark tinted shadow?
You do some nice work, I'm just getting into leatherwork myself and have done a couple of small projects. I'm looking forward to doing some hand tooling, we'll see how that turns out, the video has been a big help.
Sir u r really talented. But I want to know,if We can do very minute engraving like a letter on a finished leather item like bags or etc which we buy ready made?thanks for sharing such a good video
You can stamp some "ready made" items if you have a heat gun and a 1-2 ton press to press the stamp with. Heat the stamp with the heat gun and then use the press to apply the stamp to the leather. You don't really have many options when trying to work with pre finished leather items.
great work on the leather but I would like to have heard a description of your process and tools used instead of the music. thanks for sharing this though.
Hey man, great tooling here. Was hoping you could tell how thick the leather was that was used, and also do swivels knives right out of the package need to be sharpened?
I think it was around 8-9 oz veg tan. I don't think you need to sharpen the swivel knife right out of the package. I've never sharpened my swivel blade and it's ceramic.
Stoney Lonsome Everything I use I buy at Tandy so you must think my tooling is crap, oh wait it's pretty good. I'm surprised you know so much for someone who is just starting out, or who has been doing it for 20 years.
Stoney Lonsome I'm confused, are you calling me 15 years old? I'm 37 so I'm not sure what you're talking about. If you're 15 then I suggest get a job and stay off of youtube. I'm not being confrontational I'm simply stating my opinion and facts. You can say I'm stuck on my ways and that I won't change but that is exactly the opposite from what I do. The things you to told me to do I've already tried years ago and have now found better ways. When I started out working with leather I was buying those scrap leather bags from Hobby Lobby that are chrome tanned leather, stitching with household thread, using a Black n Decker hand drill to drill stitching holes, sanding leather edges with a hand block sander, slicking edges on my wooden shop table outside, and selling my leather products outside my house on the sidewalk on an Ikea coffee table. I've since learned a few things. The fact that you say Tandy's leather is crap says a lot about you. You've obviously been spoiled in the leather field, when you start out like me, caveman style, you can make any leather look good or work for you. As for my skull that I tooled, you can talk all the smack you want about it, I've sold around 100 sheath with that skull and I will continue to tool it as long as that's what the customer wants. Seeing as how I have almost 40,000 views I'm thinking a few others like it too. You can think these are all insults but in fact I've never once insulted you, I'm just going off of what you say. Check out my facebook page and look at all the pictures of the different toolings I've done. I'm thinking you're one of those who does all the sheridan style toolings, while those look great they all way outdated and done to death. I do custom and original toolings. Either way I really don't know why you think I'm upset, I'm really not, I think I just handle criticism better than you, or maybe it's that you found a leather worker who's better than you.
Brilliant work - it's great to see something other than flowers. I would have loved to know what stamps you were using - I don't recognise them by sight.
Very nice work and a wicked design! Love the finished look after buffing! =D If you could comment the video along the way with the name of the stamps your using that would be awesome, I love some of the effects that you create but I'm very new to stamping ^^'
I really enjoy watching you turn blank leather into something that really looks awesome. I just got into leather making (knife sheaths, holsters, ect.) and would like to step up to carving and decorating them to look more appealing. What are a couple tools I should buy first to get me started? Thank you and keep up the good vids!
Hello, first congratulations for the great job. I am Brazilian and I am starting to work with leather now, here in Brazil we lack many tools there to sell here, could you tell me which models of stamp you've used? Thanks for the help and again congratulations. Sorry about the English translator.
Hi, great work. What was the tool you used to make the cracks in the skull? Was that a pear shader you used to go around the outside of the skull? Thanks
This would not work on a leather jacket. He is using vegetable tanned leather. Jackets are made from garment leather, which is typically oil or chrome tanned. However, you could use this method on a thin piece of vegetable tanned leather, have it dyed close to the color of your jacket, and have it sewn on your jacket.
I would love to get into that as a hobby can you offer any advice as starter kits books leather to utilize And become educated in that that is some sick stuff
That came out awesome! I'm just getting into this as a hobby and hope to be able to make some cool stuff like this here in the near future. What will you do with this piece by the way? Also, what is that trace paper?
That was great! As a new starter to leatherworking the cost is quite steep for all of the tools required, as you well know, and videos like this have helped me hondown what it was I really needed to get going. Tooling has been the final thing on my list, and whilst I have character stamps and use other tools in an improvisational way, I wondered if you could maybe tell me what core group of tools you would recommend? Or maybe what to avoid getting until I am more experienced? Thankyou!
after you made cuts with swival knife what is the name and no of the tool you yoused to go round your cuts and what was the name of the background tool and no please thank you .
He used a beveler, a backgrounder, a pear shader and what looked to be a camouflage for the border. Those are the ones I recognized anyway. Hope that helps.
He used a beveler to go around the pattern and knife cuts, a backgrounder to fill in the eyes and nose, a peer shader to shade areas, and what looked like a camouflage for the border. Those are the ones I recognized, there may have been more. Hope that helps.
Thats pretty cool! One thing though...the tooling you did along the outer edge of the skull looks a bit odd. To me anyways. Maybe its just me though. Great job though.
I feel like the dye should have been a little lighter in the center sort of fading out into a darker shade. The piece itself looks dulled down a little being so dark.
Ya you're right, that was light brown, doesn't always come out that dark, sometimes different veg tan make dyes come out darker or lighter, I should have used an antique brown or tan.
I used a snipping tool and made an image and then printed it out.. Here's the Image: facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1619406248300171&set=a.1499504156957048.1073741837.100006924346732&type=1&theater

+Muther Goose Thanks, how is it funny?
Lol sorry if you misunderstood, its Fun to carve and tool,as in being the funnest thing to carve and tool
+Muther Goose Oh ok.

Mark Fay perhaps he's not doing this to teach. Maybe this is a way to show his customers the labor involved in his craft.

Idk.

Could not tell, what stamp did you use, camera focus was blurry . Kindly can you please share . Thank you .
What tool did you use to stamp the outline after cutting?
That die is too dark? Maybe the camera can't catch the contrast but... before the "antique" shade the picture was much more visible. Shouldn't the color make it "pop out" more noticeably, rather than blurring it all into one, dark tinted shadow?
ممكن نعرف كل اداة واستخدامها وتوضيح اكثر عن الادوات والية العمل بها شكرا

thank you so much for reply
I'm curious, what would you use thick leather like that for? The only use I can think of is like for shoes
Knife sheaths, gun holsters, wallets, purses, fire steel cases..etc.
Ah, I see. Thank you
hey i am trying to figure out what the first tool you use with the yellow mallet is, after the stylus? to hammer the outline with.
great work on the leather but I would like to have heard a description of your process and tools used instead of the music. thanks for sharing this though.
very nice; thanks for sharing. What type of plastic is that you used for your template?
+Kerry O'Connor it would be some type of tracing paper/vellum.

Stoney Lonsome Dude seriously let it go, go find something to do.
Stoney Lonsome I'm rubber you're glue bounces off me and sticks to you!
Fantastic work! What beveler do you use to stamp the outline @2:58 in?
Brilliant work - it's great to see something other than flowers. I would have loved to know what stamps you were using - I don't recognise them by sight.

I love these videos, badass leather stuff plus I can always expect some fucking awesome music I haven't heard. You the mannnn!
LOL thanks!
That's sweet and I love the choice of music. Reminds me of the music from the old Sega games like golden axe.
That's good to see, I have just started to have a go at this myself. What is the finish you used at the end, before buffing ?
richard tapp Eco Flo professional gloss finish.
do you wet the leather again before using the swivel knife?
Your work is beautiful. I tool myself, but I make tablet covers and bracelets. Your work is awesome.
I really enjoy watching you turn blank leather into something that really looks awesome. do you have anything on soft leather because want to make a sketch book with my own cover and where do i get a beginning tool kit?
Tandy leather
Have you made any custom guitar straps?
No but I could.
What kind of leather do you use. And where can you get it?
That's the perfect design for the back of my new custom red leather speedos!!
Hi there. So after you use the swivel blade what is the tool used? Iv never seen this done, can't work out how its working.
flyingbrick88 It's just a basic stamp tool. This one in particular is called a Beveler.
Hello, first congratulations for the great job. I am Brazilian and I am starting to work with leather now, here in Brazil we lack many tools there to sell here, could you tell me which models of stamp you've used? Thanks for the help and again congratulations. Sorry about the English translator.
look up tandy leather online they ship worldwide
Hi, great work. What was the tool you used to make the cracks in the skull? Was that a pear shader you used to go around the outside of the skull? Thanks
+charles canillas Not sure of the names, I've had them so long I forgot the names.
Great stuff...skulls are my favorite!
Thanks
this looks sooo cool!! would this method work on treated leather, like on a leather jacket?
This would not work on a leather jacket. He is using vegetable tanned leather. Jackets are made from garment leather, which is typically oil or chrome tanned. However, you could use this method on a thin piece of vegetable tanned leather, have it dyed close to the color of your jacket, and have it sewn on your jacket.
ah thought as much, thanks for the tip :) xx
+Charles Martin Correct
I know it's not professional but can the cut work also be done with a normal cutter? exactly
for simple letters...
I would love to get into that as a hobby can you offer any advice as starter kits books leather to utilize And become educated in that that is some sick stuff
Visit Tandy Leather online, they have some great pattern and starter books.
That came out awesome! I'm just getting into this as a hobby and hope to be able to make some cool stuff like this here in the near future. What will you do with this piece by the way? Also, what is that trace paper?
+Annony Mouse I think my daughter ended up getting this piece, I think it's in her toybox lol. You can get the tracing paper at Tandy Leather.

Great work. Do you have an image of that skull I could have? Music was cool too

after you made cuts with swival knife what is the name and no of the tool you yoused to go round your cuts and what was the name of the background tool and no please thank you .
I'm not sure of the name
The very first tool he uses is called a beveler
Great work. What stamps are you useing?
I don't know the names, sorry
He used a beveler, a backgrounder, a pear shader and what looked to be a camouflage for the border. Those are the ones I recognized anyway. Hope that helps.
