I hooked up the sound output of my laptop into a real spectrum, and played this video. The spectrum loaded up manic miner :) So what you've essentially done, was put a copy of Manic Miner on youtube :D Awesome huh? :)
Seb Wilkes I have a +2 so used a car CD casette adaptor, and plugged it into my laptop, put the volume to max. LOAD "" press play on teh cassette, press play on youtube.. viola.. it loaded :)
onlineamiga yeah. called "direct loading". you can load speccy games from MP3 players and all sorts. When the first person did this off my UA-cam video, I did wonder about copyright, but then somebody suggested "Bugbyte" (if it still exists) probably wouldn't care :-)
Doug Paulley Yeah its really cool. I use Tapir on my laptop to load .tap and .tzx in. Just thought it was cool to be able to load it straight off a youtube video, where someone has just put the loading sequence in there for nostalgic reasons.. yet actually by doing that has made a copy of the software itself.
i dont know if you know this, but i heard / read an interview with matthew smith and he said the first time that manic miner was ever loaded it was played down a telephone line in a similar way to how you loaded it. i think he was talking to someone he worked with at the time.
That haunting sound. Glorious. And then with Jet Set Willy there was a physical card with lots of colours to get into the game, because of The Key, where we could copy games tape to tape. Security was introduced, unnecessary safeguards.
It’s really cool how innovative games were even back then. My grandpa was telling me about this magazine he used to get, and one of the parts of the magazine was showing an entire game in binary. So for example Pac-Man with 6 pages of extremely small print 1s and 0s. And if you knew how to convert it and wanted to spend an entire afternoon imputing all the digits you could have the entire game running.
In Yugoslavia, Socialist Republic of Slovenia specifically, there were multiple radio stations which broadcast games at certain times of the day. The radio DJ would announce it first. We were little kids, recording minutes of hissing and crackling onto cassette players and playing games all day long. Our parents wondered what the hell we were taping as you can imagine. We also swapped cassettes with other kids at the school and the cassettes full of games sold by the crates at the local flea market. This literally seems like another life in another universe.
I was the only boy at school who could not finish all the levels. I felt really humiliated. In the end I think I had to use the cheat codes to see the final screen/level. Super mario ripped off matthew smith.
Who would have thought that spectrum loading noise would eventually become a music genre 'extratone'. Love it though, had one of these as a kid and this brought back memories.
Can you really imagine waiting around 3 minutes for a 'triple A' (as this game was (had of course the term then been coined) at the time) to load. I mean today when you just press a button and 30 seconds or so later you can be transported to Egypt, Germany, in a truck around Europe, or doing some 'car borrowing' around America, if you had to wait would people of today?!
I am now 40 yrs old and told my kids tonight about Spectrum 48k.This brings back so back memories, not so much the game (this and Jet Pack) but the actual LOADING SEQUENCE !!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry, but all the way through the 80s, people referred to it as a 'Speccy' or 'Spectrum', no-one called it a 'Spec'. Also what kind of a numpty thinks that computers don't act like this? Was it just a joke comment?
Oh yes!!! I could listen to that all day!!! Brilliant memories of a fantastic game, and you can almost get melodies from the loading call! Spectrum>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>PS3.
This way my fav game of all, how we used to wait for it to load, they wouldn't wait that long now!! Oh and the despair when loading it and it crashed near the end!!! But we just loaded it again. Good times :)
@edwardszzz Well actually, in an interview Matthew Smith himself said that he stole gameplay elements from an Atari 2600 game called miner 2049'er. That being said, he put his own british twist to it and came up with a fantastic and fresh-looking game that innovated on the spectrum (Sound in-game without a sound chip, genius!)
Tape loading error! God what a bummer that was! I had a spectrum 128k +2 back in 86 thought it was the pinnacle of technology, because some of the games had speech samples on them!lol! 20 odd years later, its amazing how far computers and tech has come; i wonder what it'll be like in another 20 years?
What;s kinda funny is that as a kid, I HATED the load screen - I used to end up singing it when I wasn't playing (I know...). Now I'm nothing short of ecstatic to hear it go through it again. Good times. :)
yeh it was never that long but as a child waiting so patiently to play a game , you never ever got used to the magic carpet ride over the seas of mystery ! ( I always thought thats what the screen was) even though it was probably around 5 minutes it always felt like ages, I remember eating my dinner then coming back and it was still loading ! or had loaded then you hit enter then it crashes !

I have mine and a tape player and it still works , and all my games ! I would play it but Im haunted by the game crashes after waiting 45 minutes for a game to load !
I did, and I still remember the moment: we were at my friend's place and I called his mom to come over and see the end of the game. Well, she was a little underwhelmed, to say the least, but so were we.
@@MrLeiduowen Well done for completing the game. My 11 year old son reckons he can easily complete the whole game. I'll have to get the Spectrum down from the loft and see how he gets on. Hopefully it will still work. Not been switched on for over 20 years!
yeah moggy, 'r tape loading error', what a treat when it loaded, I swear I used to 'see' some of that machine code in my head while it was loading..anyone remember the Cheetah Syn Drum?
OMG this brings me back to my childhood .... having to wait till a game has loaded toplay it xD kids these days if you put them infront of this they be going WTF lol now im an ex WoW/Aion/GW/GW2 player .. this made me a hardcore gamer for life xD
man this takes me back to when i was a little kid.. around 4 i was. Ahhh memory's.. i remember my dad loading up pac man for me... Fast Fwd never worked as i found out
Its funny you should say that because a couple hours I began the Game design document for "Fail", a game where the actual challenge of the game is to fail. -_- Yup, games pretty much play themselves now-a-days...
yeah great vid this... feel like this should be in a museum, was it really that long ago. love the load sequence, nice touch, loved this game, i was 8 when i played this, pixel perfect jumping, v.hard when games were games. 10/10
This is funny i remember going out to play until the game loaded, 2 times the fun. Great games "commando, sir Fred, saboteur, rainbow island, Rambo...."
In the 1980s, Spectrum games were broadcast over the radio once a week in Poland 🫢
Oh wow, I didn't even think of that way of distributing them, but of course that was possible. Nice that they did that!
Portugal radio also.
I hooked up the sound output of my laptop into a real spectrum, and played this video. The spectrum loaded up manic miner :) So what you've essentially done, was put a copy of Manic Miner on youtube :D Awesome huh? :)
Okay .... how did you get the ZX spectrum to read it?
Very interesting, btw!
Seb Wilkes I have a +2 so used a car CD casette adaptor, and plugged it into my laptop, put the volume to max. LOAD "" press play on teh cassette, press play on youtube.. viola.. it loaded :)

Hours of entertainment
... and that's just waiting for the game to load. :))
anicetune lol. Yes. And frustration when it did not load 🤣
I WAIT WAY TOO LONG FOR GTA ONLINE RO LOAD :))))
Is it me or is the music playing in The Cold Room level "In the Hall of the Mountain King"?
The whole game, it seems... As it wasn't annoying enough, already...
Yes, it is Grieg.
1:22 - 1:44 I still remember those sounds, the music of my youth 😋

it's true
The ones I've seen were in machine code.
Things were different back then. It sounds like your grandpa was in the golden era of gaming.
@@simonjohnwright5129what era are we currently in now? The dark ages, I suppose? Games arent that good as they once were

I love that loading sound. Brings back memories
looking back on this I really wish I'd made the effort to upload it in HD.
+kingqueen3065 No way. This looks like it actually did back then :)
Did youtube even have hd support in 2007.
about as much as the ZX Spectrum dealt with HD in 1982. fffs.
Thankyou for leaving the loading screen on, brings me right back to my childhood.
You wouldn't be able to, back in the 80's HD was like Star Trek level technology, it hadn't been invented yet.
Thank you so much, God I've forgotten how annoying and brutal that sound was on that game. The loading screen, that was music to my ears.
Jesus that just took me back around 37 years I used to love this game asa kid I used to play it on my brothers spectrum 48K
Oh god, my brain is melting!
There's something so satisfying about the loading sound.

flashback to childhood, many time sat and waited for speky to load and crash at the last minute.
mcpeelmeister71 Just class. Putting the tape in ,waiting a million years, then crash.
R Tape loading error; 0:1.
That takes me right back to my first computing days. :0) I'll always remember my Speccy with fondness, it had so much soul!
That word, soul, perfectly sums up early home computers. ZX81, Oric-1, Sinclair QL and the dial-up bulletin boards. RIP Sir Clive

Dude a solid contender for best game OST of all time
Holy moly, the loading sound alone makes this worth watching. Plus, I loved Manic Miner!
yeah
We played this video around school; us vintage gaming fans loved it, but everyone else said it sounded awful ...

This is exactly how far I'd get in the game as a kid.
First game I have ever played on ZX Spectrum... 1985?
They should pipe this into the prison cells of convicted nonces and murderers 24/7 and see how it takes to drive them mad! hehe!
NONCE
if this had a bassline it would be oh-so-popular among the youths.
Damn right - these were bastard hard to play! Army moves still haunts me to this day.
Dammit, the music is so loud my brain exploded.

i must do a remix of the loading sounds theres some good licks :)
Queimei uma tv a p/b a jogar isto, jumping jack flash é jet set willy..eheh, bons tempos! 😀
That Eugene's Lair, I hate that level.
lol, yeah I hated it too
it needed a Eugene jump.
I had a friend who used to make screaming whining noises into the tape recorder when trying to copy games
Penetrator? I hardly know her
My son, who is Autistic said he'd rather go outside than load a single game on a ZX Spectrum..
Yeah kids have no patience for a game that takes half an hour to load off tapes and even then the ruddy thing crashed a lot.
@@androidbirds9956 Depends on your download speed from your Internet provider.
Mite rig my Spekky up to the stereo to see if this works. got the game anyway but would be interesting to try

No, days. It'd only be hours if using a Turboloader.
+Humaric Anishtan if using a turboloader it would be weeks because the blooming things never worked - tweaking the volume knob a millimetre and trying again...
It'd still be longer if you just did it vanilla, only on the last possible MILLISECOND it'd err on you.
I have a game on my PC that's 50 GB in size. Transferring that at a Spectrum's tape loading rate would take about 9 years
Me gustaba visual y musicalmente. Pero no tuve demasiada paciencia para jugarlo.
This game was annoyingly hard back in the day, I never did clear more than a handful of screens.

at one point the loading sound becomes quite musical about 1.38 for a few seconds or more

I used to have the cheat (unlimited lives) Jet set Willy was the follow up
I had this on cassette with cheats & unlimited lives and completed the 20 levels everytime

Lol the amount of times it would not load. Dam you tape player..
