  • Our Ford 6610 Force II had never been the worlds best starter. When the solenoid fries I decided to try out one of Mahle's geared starters. Stay tuned to see what a difference a high torque starter can make to a diesel.

    Dave, great video! I don't seem to need a geared starter, it spins fine. I have a 1980 Ford 3600 diesel, the three cylinder. Mine ran when I bought it, I ran out of fuel the first time I used it, and then it decided never to start again, I replaced the fuel and filters, bled the system three times, and it ran a bit. Now I am putting in a new manifold heater and looking at the injectors, which appear never to have been serviced. I'm told they are good tractors when they run. I'm almost there.

      Those 3 cylinder Ford are gravity fed so they're an absolute nightmare to bleed. Any ones I've worked on have been torture, so that could be a lot of your issue. Look at my 4000 video and you'll see the pain I went through. I had no option but to resort to ether. A neighbour told me he filled his fuel tank and left the bleed open a few hours. Good luck with it and thanks for your kind comments!

    What a difference the new starter makes. Also having good connections... hard to say what makes the most difference.
    It's turned cold in Kentucky. Rain and snow today. Winter is just around the corner.
    Take care Dave

      It was badly needed Clinton. It was so hard to start when cold. Looking forward to see how it handles the cold. We had the first freezing nights a few weeks ago but its become unseasonably mild and dry here. Thanks again for watching, hope you don't get too bad a winter, that snow is starting early!

    Great video Dave!! That thing starts rite up now!! I think I need to do the same thing to the 3000 it’s very hard to start but I think it could be getting air in the system still

    • @davesworkshop2714
      @davesworkshop2714  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks Darrell. According to the forums I'm on there doesn't seem to be one for the 3 cylinders, but they could be wrong. If you're getting air it's probably at the lift pump cover or filter. Try operating the lever on the pump a few times before you fire it see if it makes a difference. Also see if there's an excess fuel button on the pump for cold starting.

    Great interesting video Dave,that mahle starter motor i believe is a top of the range although that one you got won't suit my 2 Fords 3600 Q and 4630 SQ as it's too long and wont fit a 3 cylinder Ford ynless theres a short version for 3 cylinder engine 🚜👍

    • @davesworkshop2714
      @davesworkshop2714  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Peter! Its strange that there doesn't seem to be one at present for the 3 cylinder Fords. Though I'd imagine they're far easier to start than the 4s. I believe that they're available for the 4 cylinder because they're the same starter as some TM models.

    Hi im Andy, using my sisters account. I have a 6610 gen 1 thats a bugger to start on even the slightest cold morning, the starter turns so slow even with a good battery and the wires get warm very quick. Seloniod is clicky too. Thinking this starter would make a difference for mine. Any thoughts much appreciated. Cheers

    • @davesworkshop2714
      @davesworkshop2714  2 роки тому +1

      Andy, I have no doubt that it would transform your tractor. I used to dread the cold mornings. I haven't even used the manifold heater so far this winter. Regardless if you fit one or not, go through all your main cables and make sure all the connections are clean and tight. Also check the low current supply from the ignition switch to the solenoid if it keeps clicking or dropping out. To be honest though, the original starters were always poor. They fitted the same geared starter to the TM from the factory so I guess that says enough!

      @@davesworkshop2714 Cheers and thankyou for replying, defo think im going down the route of fitting that starter and will use new cabling too as its getting abit tired. Thanks again for your help and keep those old ford vids coming!. Ps....are those horndraulic loader brackets. I fitted one to my 6610 this year, great loader. 👍

    • @davesworkshop2714
      @davesworkshop2714  2 роки тому +1

      @@kirstypalmer1987 They sure are! A neighbour had replaced theirs as the loader frame was poor and was scrapping it. We had removed a good loader from the 5000 we traded against the 6610 so we made one up with the best of the parts. It was intended as a stop gap (that was 2006!) until we bought a quickie. It runs off the spools and is constantly leaking so that'll be another video soon! Thanks for watching!

      Keith, I think we hit about -4/-5 Saturday night and it fired right up yesterday morning, still below freezing without an issue. I used the excess fuel button but not the manifold heater, there was no need. It was -8 last night, and I have no doubt but she'll start first attempt later on.
