For sure there was work to make it happen, but it looks like none of them expected him to show up at their door, so it was still a heck of a surprise!
They probably did surprise them. Probably Eds team told him or her that they are sending packages to alot of people for them to react to, film it and do a little montage to promote the "fan" album but they sent Ed instead. That would be my guess but i guess we'll never know.
