I'm a barista and I literally do not care what you order, it's my job to make it. But I do hate when customers try to talk on the phone while ordering. I've had a guy come up mid phone conversation and point to a couple of things on the menu, not a word, then stand back and wait for me to get started. I've learned not to always expect a 'hello' or even 'please' or 'thank you', but if you're capable of talking on the phone, you should be capable of talking to me.

Something similar happened to me yesterday. I work at a small bakery that makes coffee and lattes. This girl came in on her phone and kept talking while another woman motioned to me if she had ordered. I took the woman's order and when I started it the girl got off get phone for a sec and sold of she could order. Before I could answer she went back talking on her phone. When she did start trying to order she kept asking a million questions and did not make a decisive order until she got off her phone.

I had a customer put her finger in my face with the death stare because I said hello and she was on the phone. Might I add that there were people behind her as well.

I'm not a barista but I also work in food so the only time I respect someone on a phone when they are asking their friend or someone elder who can't come to the place to bring something for them. Usually calls like these are quick and the customer leaves with a quick conversation.
I guess in that specific scenario they are not rude but slightly generous to the one on the other side of the phone.
*Usually these customers do not call while driving and are in hurry but still wanna enjoy onto something.

Maybe he should avoid sugar AND artificial sweeteners... because it isn't like artificial sweeteners are GOOD for you. They're actually more fattening than natural sugar... additional body fat is also awful for diabetes. The barista not giving him splenda or sugar is doing him a favor.

I think it was more context, and also Splenda particular.
Generally, cappuccinos aren't sweetened. So getting splenda or anything else in yours at a less mainstream coffeeshop might seem moronic.
Splenda itself has a lot of unstudied health risk and as made with chlorine. It's hard to say what long term effects look like, or whether it is worse for you than aspartame. More natural zero calorie sweeteners are probably a better option to sweeten a beverage (if you must) if you are diabetic or dieting. Stevia is safe for diabetics, sweet, and isn't made from chlorine or, well, poisonous chemicals. Maybe the less moronic option?

Okay..I'm a barista and I would never judge anyone by the type of drink they order. That seems kind of ridiculous. However, I do find it to be pretty rude when I'm trying to take an order from someone and they're on the phone. It can't be that hard to have the person on the other line wait for 15 seconds. Being on the phone while ordering tends to make the time go a lot slower and it's not very courteous. I love having conversations with customers when it's not very busy though:)

    • @Tozzie50
      @Tozzie50 9 років тому +1

That's right, just put it nicely and politely. I just have one question: if the person apologizes while on the phone, and says it's very important, that's ok, right? No experience or anything, just curious :)

Tosca Greenwood Yes, that's totally fine! As long as they're not slowing the line down, it's okay. But if someone is staring at their screen while mumbling their order or having a conversation with someone at the counter while other people are waiting in line, that's frustrating. But in cases like the one you said, it's perfectly fine:)

If you think these baristas are arrogant or rude... you probably do the things that they don't appreciate. If you continue to get bad customer service... maybe you're a bad customer. They have to be nice because they're at their job and they have to represent the company or establishment that they are working for but you should feel obligated to be nice as well because they are human being. Don't be on your cell phone while ordering, it comes across as you basically telling the person that is serving you that they are less than the dirt under your finger nails. Respect the lovely human being that serve you every day and you will have an amazing experience everywhere you go.

I don't think that people have a problem with the baristas complaining about people being rude or on their phones, anyone in customer service knows how irritating that kind of thing is. It's more of the whole whining about what the customers are ordering that is frustrating. Like, "if you put splenda in your coffee you're a moron" and "if you get a frappucino your just being difficult". I mean, why insult people over what they want to order, it's *their* drink? A lot of the baristas in this video in particular do sound arrogant.

    • @Laz3r2k
      @Laz3r2k 9 років тому +1

But coffee isnt about frappucino or some good tasting stuff in the cappuccino. if you've ever drank a really good coffee and you've learned too appreciate good coffee its quite insulting to just ruin the espresso or the coffee with milk and sugar because a lot of people are working hard to get the best taste out of the bean. But basicly if you only see baristas in the way that it is portrait in the video you have to think they're arseholes.

    • @Laz3r2k

I think the coffee culture that we have in the western society does'nt allow to only sell plain coffee or plain espresso because people are used to drink their industrial coffee with milk and sugar and it's stuck in their head that black coffee is bitter and sour, which it is'nt if it's well roasted. Maybe that mindset will change sometime.

It's really sad considering that "baristas" don't really have anything to be mocking people about. Consumers don't have to give them their business.
In Europe, being a barista is about having passion for coffee and behaving with dignity, showing respect for the customer. It's almost like its a hipster joke here in the West. It's more about being passionate about insulting your livelihood.

    • @ChaoticButterfly

Byron MacGreggor They sound passionate about their coffee. I got the impression that they only judge people who don't take it as seriously, or order frou-frou drinks that aren't really coffee. Like the one guy said about the red eye, two good drinks blended to make a crap drink. They're coffee snobs, probably because they're passionate about it.

Byron MacGreggor I have social anxiety and I worry about people judging me all the time, to the point where it keeps me from doing a lot of stuff like going to clubs, gym, making new friends...but I also understand that people judge others all the time and it's normal. It's OK to judge to yourself just don't say anything to the person. I am also a barista and to be honest I do judge people based on what they order because your drink says a little about you. Like when a person gets too demanding on a cup of coffee I already know that would be a person I wouldnt like to be around because those people tend to be controlling and wanting everything their own way.

A lot of American Baristas seem to behave as if you're bothering them while they're in the middle of something important when you arrive to place an order. Honestly, I didn't know what great customer service was until I relocated to Tokyo for seven months of the year. It's like night and day. In American you become so used to the eye-rolling, snarky remarks and condescending tone that it just sort of becomes the thing you just reconcile yourself to receiving as part of the service. So when you finally encounter baristas elsewhere like Tokyo, it's like going from a black and white TV to color.genuine smiles, helpful service, appreciation and polite easy banter. Since relocating the main offices to Japan. I've instituted policies where new employees are trained in customer service in Tokyo so that the clients are treated like something other than the target of open contempt.

    • @HoppyBunny.
      @HoppyBunny. 8 років тому +2

+Benevolent Female baristas are the worst in America. Not all mind you, but a lot of them think you never see their eye rolls or catch the stiff rebuff or derision in their voice when they have act like they have to lower themselves to communicate with you. They rarely look straight at you, rather they look past you with the plausible deniability contempt method. On top of that, they interpret virtually any friendly gesture or word from you as an unwanted sexual advance that they later entertain their fellow baristas and friends with in their supremely exaggerated accounts with the "creep customer." A good friend of mine who once worked as a barista filled me in on a lot of unsavory things they would do to drinks just because they didn't like what a customer wore, or looked like or even ordered. It is so different in Tokyo. Before I never even bothered to learn about different beverages because the service was so bad. Now the friendly service here encourages me to not feel prosecuted just for asking a few questions.

+Toni Mastrota No. I'm not kiding. Take a look at the video again. The attitude of the baristas is you the customer has to work hard to acquire THEIR approval, while YOU the customer passively tolerate their self-righteous judgement, despite the fact that its the customer's dollars that keep their businesses open. The people in the videos aren't even speaking about actual rude or cruel customers, their speaking condescendingly and with utter judgemental snobbishness about regular people.Trust me, dspite all their faux hipster know it all attitude, most American baristas have the least insight into the minds and thoughts of the customers. If you tolerate bad service in a place where there is little good service to begin with, then you don't know how bad it really is until you find yourself in a completely different place that treats the customer like they're grateful that you would do business with them.

So flavoured iced coffees are "you are just being difficult"... Then why put them on the menu if the barista is just going to be a dick about it and huff and puff at my order? _^_ Call me difficult, but when it's hot outside an iced coffee is genuinely what I want, so please serve it to me without rolling your eyes, after all I'm paying that little bit extra for it...

    • @cactuarizard

Theres a big difference between iced coffee and a frappeccino. If you ever find a nice coffee house, try an iced pour over and see if you need to add a flavor afterwards. Baristas just want to show customers the true aromatics of coffee. There are people that are in the blazing sun picking beans all day. People that roast the beans in steaming hot warehouses. We just dont want to waste their effort by drowning the coffee in sugar. I hope this reply helps :D

Sugar is better than Splenda because Splenda contains aspartame, a chemical compound that is getting banned in countries such as Indonesia & South Africa (Europe has enforced a limit on how much of aspartame is allowed in foods). Diet Pepsi even dropped Aspartame from it's drink. Sugar is much less controversial and therefore safer. Aspartame isn't terribly bad but it is worse than sugar.

Blended ice drinks are only annoying when it's busy, and/or you are short handed. They take time and interrupt the usual flow. Making 4 cappuccinos is easier than one Frappuccino. When it's not busy, they aren't that bad- and though the barristas in the vid had good points, they came off as a bit prickish.
The things that always got me:
    1) People on the phone while ordering for just themselves
    2) Temperature Nazis*
    3) Highly complicated orders when it's obviously a busy time**
    4) People coming to the barista to make modifications to the order that would require an upcharge- expecting it free
*If it's too cold, my bad! No prob! It's the people who want it hotter than is legally considered safe, but don't say it. People who return the cappuccinos that are steamed to regulation- saying they are not hot enough, insisting I just 'heat it up some more' after they drank from it. I have to make an all new one, because you didn't bother to say you want your drink literally boiling. LITERALLY BOILING.
**Highly complicated orders that require me visiting different stations around the place when it's busy (I want a Frappe, but with 2 esperesso shots, part iced coffee part frappe mix, two pumps chocolate, one mint, froth on top instead of whip cream, and can you blend in a cookie from the case?)

GenericOverload COMPLETELY agree. People go to coffee shops so that they can simply get a coffee of their choice, sit down, relax, or just leave. Not to get judged by their barista on what kind of coffee they buy and/or their small behavioral manners such as talking on the phone or not wanting to talk much in general. And if you do judge or make assumptions about people you barely know based on what kind of coffee they order, ESPECIALLY if you're the barista who's supposed to be politely fulfilling that order, you just have a horrible tendancy to judge those you meet on things that do not define them in any aspect or way besides what kind of sugar they use in their bitter caffeinated drinks.

To those saying the baristas in the video are being stuck up pricks, let me give you some perspective since I once was a barista myself (never again...=.=)
First, most customers will simply give their order, we take it, ring you up and you're on your way. Most of us don't have any qualms with these customers; they're simply going about their day. What we DISLIKE is ones that don't know what they want, act pretentious, are rude, are being difficult and on the phone. Here's why.
Imagine you have a long line out the door (this was common for my store). Everyone wants their caffeine fix and is cranky. You are too because you had to wake up at 4 am to open the store. Or it's the middle of the day and need a fix yourself but have to wait until your shift break. And then someone comes up chatting away on their phone. The people behind them are getting more agitated. Or the person is humming and hoing because they don't know what they want. It slows the line down, pisses people behind him off (don't even pretend you don't get agitated because I see it on your faces) and they take it out on us because we're not "fast enough". Sorry, but it will piss us off.
Or worse, the customer who's being a handful/pretentious. We're trying to give you the coffee/pho-coffee you ordered. Don't get uppity when it's not 10000% how you want it; we're not you. We don't know the nucinses of how you like your drink unless I've made your particular order for you specifically.
So yeah, while most of the time it's just quick, simple business, there are a few who annoy/piss us off and we tend to remember them more. And it's not just baristas; it's like this with EVERY minimum-wage retail job.

Being on the phone is probably the worst thing for me. There have been countless times when someone just walks up to the counter talking on the phone, says, "Latte", and goes right back to their conversation. Meanwhile I'm just standing there and waiting for a break in their conversation to ask what size they would like it in, and if they want it either hot or iced. I don't care if you continue to talk on your phone while I'm making the drink, but at least tell the other person to hold on for a minute while you order.
The only other thing I really find annoying is blended drinks. They're delicious, but they take a while to make, and are a bit of a pain to clean up after. However, I only find them annoying to make if I have a line, or if it's at the end of the day and everything is already cleaned. Well, we only have two blender parts, so if you order three different blended drinks, it's kind of annoying to have to go to the back and rinse one out, but that's because I feel like I'm taking too long.

Its important to remember that these people have just been asked to share their views and that it is human nature to make opinions and impressions about how people are just by their actions. Its not like theyve called an emergency protest press conference just because they need to complain about starbucks customers. Also, when someone starts talking to you, you will involuntarily make a judgement on what/how they are like just by what theyve said and how theyve said it, regardless of whether they are giving the people you work for money. by reading this, you may have picked up the idea that im an ignorant douchebag who has nothing better to do but waste time correcting people on youtube. You may have thought something completely different, but you would have made a judgement on my character.
Its also possible that after you read the first sentence, the voice in your head subconsciously gave me a distinct voice that would be different if it was written differently or by someone you knew personally

I used to be a barista, or a coffee slinger, or a coffee server or a cashier who just so happens to be surrounded by coffee all day, or whatever the acceptable term for our kind is. I don't give a flying flip how you want your coffee or your tea. I'm not a coffee snob, I'll serve it however you want. People in food service tend to get touchy about the food they serve, but it's silly. The person who is going to drink it is the only person in the world to whom it matters what's going on in the cup. Get over it, we have bigger fish to fry in the world. I do agree with them on the customer attitude front though. I don't care who you are, I don't care what you do, if you can't treat other human beings with the basic level of respect you're asking from them, your existence is moot.

Just pretend the coffeeshop is a bar, and the barista is your bartender. Except at a bar, if you act like a tool or are rude to the bartender, you don't get served/a bouncer kicks you out. Coffee shops and baristas don't have bouncers.
Just treat your barista as your would treat any other server or bartender. That includes tipping. Also, you wouldn't sit down at a table in a restaurant and talk on the phone while someone was taking your order, right? At least I hope you don't.

  • @shantae3267

Being a barista for four years, I can really relate to this...
Yes, some of this is quite over exaggerated like the flavoured drinks and such, but like the phone thing...that does get very annoying... but like any job, you get some good customers that make your day worth it, and you get some bad ones that make your day that little bit on the crap side.
Also, it is not just baristas that 'judge' like this... everyone judges one another in some way or form... it's being human.
All I can say is this, if someone is serving you, be polite to them and respect the work they do, they are there to do what they can to get you what you want (whether that be a coffee, food, clothes, etc...)
On a side note: No, not all baristas are like this, frankly I don't care what you order is as long as you say thanks when I happily hand you your beverage of choice. If you are friendly and respectful throughout our interaction I will most likely give you something for free next time I see you.

Splenda doesn't taste too well in coffee - it doesn't compliment the flavour too well indeed. But some people can't use sugar. I wouldn't call people morons because they order one. I'd probably think "ew but on you go, enjoy".
This video has so many shades of grey - don't be a prick to anyone, generally, which includes not talking on the phone whilst ordering, and just be nice (I mean, you talk with this person for about a minute and you don't see them again possibly, be nice). Yes, there is some ignorance about coffee out there, and there are things that basically make coffee a oversweetened drink that doesn't taste like coffee anymore, but it's not like this person is a horrible human being for ordering it?
Hipster douches? Let them wear flowers and their knitted moustache sweaters whilst drinking overpriced flavoured frappucinos - snicker a bit, they're funny, ok, MOVE ON.
I am quite a coffee maniac and I don't think being all high and mighty douche behind both sides of the counter at the coffee shop won't do any good.

stigma against splenda has nothing to do with its inorganic state...adding any kind of sweetener (including sugar) ruins the complexity inherent to diverse espresso profiles. every major coffee chain from the last 50 years has taught the public to cover up the natural undertones in good coffee because it is cheeper to roast and serve burnt and disgusting-tasting beans. Not pretentious. They are passionate about the appropriation of misguided coffee normatives.

But I never made someone's drink with less attention to detail out of spite. If you do your job as a barista well and love doing it, that means you care about coffee AND people. I was having a really shitty day and I stopped by a coffee shop I frequent (A LOT) and one of my favourite barista's gave me my drink for free without even telling me until he'd done it. Wanna know why? Because I'm nothing but courteous and friendly when I go in the shop. I'm never rude or disrespectful when they're taking a long time (Hey. They get busy.) Or simply because there's someone new who's learning. We've all been there, being new. I talk with them and joke with them, and smile. I never talk on my phone, though that's just rude in general when order something from somewhere, or checking out at a store.... Anyway. I
