I loved Zone of the Enders on the GBA, came out when I was a freshman in high school and I couldn’t put it down. It’s a series I’ve always thought deserved more.

@@UNSTABLE111 I got about 20 hours on my first run, but I also went out if my way to explore. If you wanted to only to the main story and nothing else it would probably be about 10, but there is a lot of optional content in the game, some I didn't find til a second playthough

I LOVED Magic Pengel. The music was good, and the mechanics were simple enough for me to turn off my brain on Saturdays and get some gameplay in. I loved that they went all in with the wackiness when it came to some of the moves your Doodle could do, like dropping a goddamn FRYING PAN on an opponent's head to stun them.

It is not really an rpg, more like an adventure/action game spinoff, but it has a very unique atmosphere.
Anyway I have to take a look at the Dokapon, Magic Pengel, Inindo, Sorcerer's Kingdom and Dungeon Maker from this list.

Hey, Key of Heaven was actually a really good game. You could build your own combos to use on enemies, and when they were defeated they could drop moves that you could add to existing combos. Iirc, there was this combo of legendary sanyu'an moves that had passed from human knowledge that you construct over the entire adventure.
Seeing as how you've clearly misjudged KoH, it makes me wonder what else on this list you've misjudged. All I'm saying is, those that have played KoH (to the end) care about it a lot, and those that don't care definitely haven't played it, which is probably true of everything else on this list. Not a good video

To be fair, this Zone of the Enders GBA game appealed to me as a fan of the Super Robot Wars games. If you look back to the GBA titles of that series, you can see a clear similarity. I actually really liked how unique it was with the hit and dodge aspects, but it just made the overall game draggy, compared to quick, direct numbers.

Square-Enix is working on making their earlier titles more accessible on newer platforms. If they go with Dawn of Mana, the battle system and upgrade mechanic needs a COMPLETE overhaul. As I recall, the reset of the progression system was a design choice that did not sit well with reviewers or gamers (like myself) alike.

Even when Eric didn't like it, I'm kind of happy to see Zone of the Enders The Fist of Mars here. I still keep my cartridge with love. Wouldn't say it's a hidden gem, sadly the game is kind of basic and easy, but it has a great story structured as an anime with 25 chapters, with really well constructed and memorable characters. Perhaps is an adquired taste, but I still love that game.

Sorcerer's Kingdom was actually one of my earliest experiences with RPGs, and I still think it's a great game. Even having played through it more recently I still think it's pretty great. If you like old-school 16-bit turn-based/tactical RPGs, you could do a lot worse than Sorcerer's Kingdom. I'd really like to see another game take it's battle system and do something cool with it, because it is kind of a unique blend of turn-based and tactical RPG mechanics.

Shadow Tower and the King's Fields games _"appeal"_ is their difficulty, old style of _"make your own maps on paper"_ and slow grind to become powerful enough just to survive.
All of those predecessors of the Souls formulae.
Sure... They are slow paced, wildly unrewarding and difficult just for the sake of difficulty as all heck...
But nothing beats the satisfaction of acquiring the ultimate versions of all spells in King's Field 1 (USA) and decimating everything that gave you a hard time before or finally finding the route to that _"out of reach"_ item/weapon/chest that has been teasing you for hours.

I haven't played Tecmo's Secret Of The Stars since the Mid-90s but at the time I had a lot of fun with it. Yes, the graphics are quite basic but the soundtrack is nice, the battle mechanics are cool and include a combo system not unsimilar to Phantasy Star 4 and the story is servicable. What I can't remember, though, is that the game was ever the talk of the town. It completely flew under the radar but the few people who played it seemed to enjoy it. So it's no wonder no one cares about the game today because no one knows about it and no one knew about it in the first place.

I actually liked Fist of Mars I still own it. When I heard Winkysoft the people who made the Super Robot Wars spin-off series Masou Kishin I had to try it.

The games on this list I care about:-
ZoE: Fist of Mars (I LOVE the ZoE franchise)
Key of Heaven/Kingdom of Paradise (So glad no one cares about this because I was able to pick it up for £3)
Zoids Assault (I like mecha. The end.)
Shadow Tower (Spiritual precursor to Demon's Souls? Yes please!)
I don't own the last two but they are on my list. Also I suffer with chronic insomnia so Shadow Tower may be perfect for me. 😂

Virtua Quest could have been great with some better controls.

Virtua Quest was a bit of a mess but I did enjoy playing through it a few times,
Even regret selling it back when I was a kid, not that I'd like to pay that 30~40USD range for it though,
Maybe if it ever goes down in price I'll get it again.

Played through Shadow Tower completely back in the day. It is very atmospheric, unsettling and just plain weird. Very much just like King's Field, just not as good. Still did enjoy it though

You said you made this 2 years ago? I would be really interested in your opinion on shadow tower now a days. I love kings field ( especially the 4th one) and loved both shadow tower and shadow tower Abyss. Im just a big From software fan and have played almost all their games.

Dokapon Monster Hunter can get boring but the Gameplay is Good, as for Secret of the Stars i just started playing that RPG to prove that it's worth trying

Dawn of Mana is a good game and I'll forever stand by it, it just begins horribly. By chapter 2, it gets a lot better and never stops until the surprisingly dark and poignant ending. It also doesn't help that the default button layout is just weird, I remapped every single command button on the controller to get it to play, like, normally. Just bad decisions all around that makes it easy for people to dismiss the game, and I don't blame them. But I do urge to give it another go. The first Shadow Tower is boring but the PS2 sequel is AMAZING, and there is an English patch available. One RPG I absolutely adored and nobody ever talks about is Trinity: Souls of Zill O'll for PS3.

The art direction in ST:A is truly stunning. God I really want another Shadow Tower game with the current FromSoftware team

Yeah, some of those games were quickly forgotten... but people *really* care for the soundtracks of some of those titles :D
