So to be clear, red and blue are not primary colors in terms of pigments (subtractive). I am a visual arts major, so I spoke to my professor about this and she was quite impressed. The thing is, even other traditional art mediums (especially ink and printing based ones) know this, it's just that the RYB model became popular in painting when other pigments were not so easily accessible. Try using cyan, magenta, and yellow as your primaries and you'll be capable of a much larger range, including everything RYB gives you and plenty more that RYB isn't quite capable of. For acrylics I recommend the Amsterdam brand's primary color set, for gouache Holbein is quite good and the cyan is actually more accurate there.
If anyone is confused: White is not a color. The spectrum of white to black are shades. White being the epitome of light and black being the absence of light. So depending on how much light is added or subtracted, you get different shades of grey. Adding/subtracting “light” or white/black to the colors, you get different shades (or hues) of the color. So he didn’t add any extra COLORS, he added the element of light to the colors.
Yes it is, and so are gray and black. They count as some of the 16.8 million, 4096, 256, 128, 121, 96, 64, 48, 24, 16, 8, 4, or 2 colors in computers, crayons, pencils, and markers; but they are just not _hues,_ so they haven't counted as "colors" in B/W TV/other video, film (or photography in general), copying, and printing; and the "color" versions of those things should've been called "hue TV," "hue film," etc., but the term "hue..." never stuck, so we have the imperfect terms "color... ____ " instead. As they say, "It is what it is."
White and black can still be considered colors although you are right that white contains all non- gray scale colors and black is the absence of them. Same argument for zero being the absence of number yet it gets the treatment of a number

That's not brown. That's dark red-ish magenta aka port royale. Mixing primary paint pigments reflects lights that are not necessarily primary light colors. Result is white + some blue + even more red but since it's pigments most of the light is absorbed so it's dark. Brown is simple: orange+black
