- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Presenting the 2020 winner of NPR's Tiny Desk Contest, Supported by State Farm
Oct. 5, 2020 || Linda Diaz -- Winning the Tiny Desk Contest has been a surreal experience for me, not only because it's a big, big honor, but because it's all happening in the midst of a global pandemic. Even just shooting my Tiny Desk (home) concert has been a wild ride: getting the band together, getting the NPR team together, figuring out how to shoot safely with everyone in New York City. At one point, we finally had everything set and ready to go. Then, days before the shoot, I tested positive for COVID-19. I will spare you all the details (lots of tears, lots of phone calls), but I am so grateful for my band, the NPR Music team and the Javits Center for going above and beyond for me, the human as much as me, the musician.
Even though I couldn't be at the Desk, I'm feeling lucky to have been able to share some extra little parts of my personality with my (home) concert. Like, how dope is it to be able to say that I'm not only the 2020 Tiny Desk Contest winner, but that we were the first musicians ever to perform on the top of the Javits Center?! In more ways than one, this concert is a victory and a dream come true for me.
Through this whole process, it has felt weird to be celebrating, but what has been reiterated time and again is that it is more than OK to be Black and celebrate and mourn and organize and rest and any other number of things. Black joy is radical because it actively opposes defeat. It is necessary.

Please have Litany on in the future. So thankful for these spotlights. In gratitude.
I was in Bakersfield and npr was good.
So very proud of my niece, Linda Diaz. From the day she was born, I waited hours for her in the waiting room. The nurse rolled her out and I saw this little pink bundle, I cried. I remember saying to myself, “wow, she has a set of strong lungs.” This rang true throughout life. My darling niece, I am proud of the beautiful woman that you have become. Continue to sing your heart out. Reach for the stars and beyond. You have always been a star. Shine bright my love.
She is quite lovely I dare say
Awww you sound like a wonderful auntie. Love that you support her and provide positive support in her life!
She is amazing...love from Australia
This is so pure
💗💗💗💜💜💗💗💗
audio engineer is the real MVP
RIGHT!!
Man listen...
Location shoot on a windy noisy day
Good to see 'ol iZotope RX keeping audio engineers gainfully employed.
I was thinking the same thing! This is outside and clearly windy just outside of the city. I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS AUDIO! And this group is amazing!
Shout out to the sound engineers during this beautiful, windy concert.
Are you Linda's sister? haha
Are you the sound engineer?
Linda and her band are amazing! The mic is a Sennheiser MKH 416 shotgun in a Rycote wind jammer + lots of help from iZotope RX...
Josh Rogosin you sir are one of the reason I’m always enjoying these amazing NPR Tiny Desk Concerts !!!...Keep up the amazing work !! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
@@chiefsallday842 No I'm a writer, but I studied it as an undergrad. I fell in love with the complexity and have mad respect and admiration for sound engineering.
NPR really has the best audio engineers ever. I always thought this cause I always thought people sound better when they perform there but how they handled this outside/windy concert just seals the deal! So impressive.
Hello how are you doing today
Shots fired, KEXP. They gonna record in an active volcano for 2021. Pick the musicians. FIGHT!
For the first time in my life I googled microphones after watching some of these little sets! They capture the moment so well. This set and everyone is so hard to describe... but why even try :-)
Playback
Thank you for having me! It's an honor
🤩
You did phenomenal! I love how light this performance was especially with the wind 🍃
Thank you, Linda! This was such a fun concert!
This was a beautiful vibe! So happy you're feeling healthy and didn’t lose your opportunity ❤ You have such a gift
You need to collab with Khalid!
WOW!!.... I am SO so glad to see that NeoSoul isn't dead!!! They sound beyond their ages!!!
She has such a unique vocal quality. It's so tender that it seems like it's about to fall out of the note and yet somehow she powers through every time. It's such a delicate and precise voice. I love it. New fan here.
You described this perfectly. I was trying to analyze what was so unexpectedly awesome about her voice. You took the words out of my mouth!
The most aesthetically pleasing tiny desk background yet!
so good, so memorable
They're in New York City. 🗽
I never knew something like this existed in NYC, anyone know where it's at/what it's called?
@@GG-cp7xi This is shot on top of the Javits Center, a convention center that was repurposed as overflow medical space earlier in the pandemic. New York has a lot of beautiful places like this but this reminds me more of San Francisco to be honest
i immediately thought the opposite. i hate the industrial as i come from the center of it
We stan an Afro-Latina queen 😍😍😍
That's my cousin right there.! Congrats girl.! ✨
Shootout to the keyboard player who set the whole mood with the nice and soothing chords. Jade Che? Girl you rock!
Yeah, no kidding! She has infinite chill
NPR turned me onto Linda Diaz, and I’ve been telling everyone about her since!
I've been unabashedly doing the same
dawg tell me about it🇿🇦
Same!
same
Her voice, her skin, her dress, the wind blowing her hair. Just beautiful!
As a grandfather of a wonderful little granddaughter who loves performing and art, I can assure you that giraffe meant so much to your grandfather, Linda. He'd be thrilled to see you bring it to your "home" concert, and probably have tears in his eyes as I do.
Thank you for this ❤️
She is so beautiful!!!
She could be called _Gorgeous_ Diaz ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
her name in spanish and portuguese literally is beautiful
Her parents named her correctly @@TheEpicgamesx
You might be giving the win to the singer, but I’m giving it to the whole band! An ensemble that plays like that deserves as much respect as the singer for sure!
Omg never heard of her where she been all my 38 years of my life love her song 🗣️💗💗💗💗💗👑👑
i literally was just thinking about how nice it would be to have a full linda diaz episode on here as i was revisiting her contest entry yesterday!!!!!! wow what a gift!

I am a big fan of Cool Company whose Matt can be seen on the Bass here and is producing Linda Diaz. Loved her ever since they recommended her first songs on their channel. She deserves all the attention she will gain through this! BTW they do too - you should really check them out!

A deserved win, this tiny desk sess was amazing. Congratulations 🤎.

Beautiful, happy music. Thanks Linda! Backup singers Jacks and Bianca are great; ditto for the rest of the band.
the fact that i cant hear wind is shocking and amazing
Oh, she is lovely!
Once again the sound engineers doing an awesome job! Thanks for this NPR
Im In love 🥰 she reminds me of a classic 60s Jet magazine model. I love her energy 👑 beautiful voice
Talent!!! Linda you are magic! Glad to have discovered this concert.
Hello Carole
This is probably the best Tiny Desk so far. The soft perfect outside environment, birds squaking and the band is dope. Live mix is incredible.
Super chill. Just wish I heard this during the summer! Perfect summer day music.
How did they all perform this?!? No in-ear monitors? Just a roof in NYC with lots of wind. Holy cow.
Great musicians
Maybe there's a massive PA behind the camera.
Clue is in the editing. At least two takes, at least one take with everyone solo performing . During green tea ice cream the drummers wind shield is missing from a shot, and during the last song one of his mics falls down, he doesn't actually need it since the rest of the song is only on one drum but his lack of expression means he knows that it doesnt matter what it sounds like as they already have the true master down.
Obsessed with Linda’s music
watching linda diaz on tiny desk contest submissions: "how did this not win"
watching this: "oh wait it did"
besides the artists and the band, the visuals are goin crazyy
her voice is so wholesome omg!
