This is an altogether lovely and winning 6th Concerto, emphasizing beauty and melody more than virtuosity, as does the less impressive and expansive 7th Concerto. Its playful finale seems to mirror the mischievous glint in violinist De Mayer's eyes.

Henri Vieuxtemps was maybe not the greatest innovator, but without doubt the greatest violinist after Paganini and before Ysaye.
