These kinda videos are my favorite from this channel! Material culture like this makes the past feel more Real and human. I may be separated by thousands of years and miles from these people, but they're normal people like me, they had rich relationships, they had favorite foods, they wanted to make themselves look pretty, they wrote complaint letters, etc. Wild to think these pots and bowls people ate out of thousands of years ago are still here, telling the story of their owners and makers when they're long gone. The reason I subscribed to your channel is cuz you make a lot of videos that talk about that aspect of history, and read a lot of primary sources. Thanks for making these!

Just to add, sometimes pottery artifacts help on dating not only by the style of art, but also by physical properties, namely resetting the "clock" of certain crystals in the clay. People who work with any type of radiation and use TLD badges would know this property well I presume.
Now this is the sort of content that makes you one of my favourite channels! Mesopotamian visual art has always fascinated me. I sometimes wonder if Achaemenid visual arts should be grouped in with Mesopotamian art due to the similarities, I'm ashamed to say I still can't tell the difference between many of the statues haha
That's a good question. When it came to visual art, the Achaemenids were heavily influenced, not just by Babylonian and Assyrian styles, but also Egyptian, Elamite, Phoenician and Lydian art, to name the major ones. A big reason for this was that just a few generations before, they had been nomads and didn't have the monumental urban art that for millennia had been present in the places mentioned above. Once they settled down though, they adopted much of the popular Near Eastern imagery but morphed it into something that was unique Persian. Watching this video gave me a question about cylinder seals. You stated that most seals had some religious meaning or reference and like the seals of today most were used to verify or identify official documents. So if a king/priest wanted to enact law/custom wouldn’t the easy thing to do is just claim the “god(s)” approved of it and used “their” seal, instead of the personal (king/priest) seal? What activity do we mostly see a personal (individual) seal being used as opposed to “gods/religious/ect being used? Sorry if I’m overthinking this, it wouldn’t be the first time.
That’s a really good question and I don’t have a definite answer. To my knowledge, there are thousands of cylinder seals that have been discovered, not just in Mesopotamia, but all over the Near East and even in Central and South Asia. I suppose just for variety’s sake you’d want different seals, even if you claimed to be the representative of a god (or gods). While I’m sure that some were merely for decoration, I tend to think of the seals of kings and high officials sort of like a medieval coat arms - most seem to have had some religious or mythical reference but they were also unique because the ruler or official probably wanted to stand out a bit. Just my thoughts. Other seals had prayers on them depending ensuring safe passage of whatever message or good it was verifying - perhaps invoking the protection of a specific deity for a particular case. If you visit the national museum in Damascus I am sure you need at least four days to complet just looking at the beauty of the ancient clay seal and how it is astonishing the accuracy in making those seal as for moment you think it is CNC machine has made it... According to the Quran, ancient Mesopotamians main worship was the sun, moon and stars. That would mean Utu, Nannar and Inanna were the main deities of worship.

And notice how there are 3 symbols in ancient mesopotamian art that represents the sun, moon and stars? Personally I think that's amazing.
@@js1423 And while it's true there are seals showing other gods than those trio, those trio were obviously worshipped day to day for a common person. Just look at the magnitude of the Utu/Shamash statue at 9:17 or the massive Inanna/Ishtar statue, you will not find another one like it with Anu, Enki or Enlil.
Why do a lot of mesopotamia male figures in art & statues have beards that appear to be made of small square shapes that make up the full beard? are these meant to be realistic representation of braided beards? or is it just an artistic style? or are these beads they wore in their beards? It seems like it's only from the mesopotamia area across many dynasties and empires, you see beards depicted this way for thousands of years. the whole figure looks lifelike, but the beards appear unnatural, like their braided, beaded, or something. I just don't know what.

I’m curious if the god An/Anu has ever been shown on cylinder art. It seems I can’t find any depictions of this important deity
According to the Quran, ancient Mesopotamians main worship was the sun, moon and stars. That would mean Utu, Nannar and Inanna were the main deities of worship.

@@js1423 Because the Quran was written 1400 years ago, while the knowledge on the worship of ancient Mesopotamians was lost over 2000 years ago and was unearthed approx a 100 years ago. And notice how there are 3 symbols in ancient mesopotamian art that represents the sun, moon and stars? Personally I think that's amazing.

@@js1423 And while it's true there are seals showing other gods than those trio, those trio were obviously worshipped day to day for a common person. Just look at the magnitude of the Utu/Shamash statue at 9:17 or the massive Inanna/Ishtar statue, you will not find another one like it with Anu, Enki or Enlil.
Why do a lot of mesopotamia male figures in art & statues have beards that appear to be made of small square shapes that make up the full beard? are these meant to be realistic representation of braided beards? or is it just an artistic style?
or are these beads they wore in their beards? It seems like it's only from the mesopotamia area across many dynasties and empires, you see beards depicted this way for thousands of years.
