Joining the fandom was a slippery slope for me. Started with poking fun at them, and then shot down to where i am now. I don't think I can escape anymore

I have ALWAYS Liked drawing animal characters and telling stories with them. When I was 11 I Used to write comic books about mythical animals living together in an apartment. With a black, Anthro, Wolf-Like Chupacabra (named Chuppy) as the main character.
Some time in 2020 I discovered what the furry fandom was via UA-cam videos. And here I am now with a Neon Purple Jackalope Fursona. ^^

I have probably always been a Furry. As a kid in the 1960's, I had no interest in playing with dolls or other human things. All of my toys were animal figures. I couldn't relate to human figures. When I daydreamed, I was an animal, often living the life of a human. I drew comic books where all of the characters were animals doing things in a human world. Having grown up with Bugs Bunny and other cartoon characters, I never thought this was anything but normal.
When I grew into adulthood, this fascination never left me, but since I was forced into it, I had to Adult and leave that fun anthro world behind.
A few years ago I stumbled into Second Life, where at first I was not very interested as I thought the only avatar I could choose would be those vacant eyed, exaggerated human bodies. How glad I was to find that there was a wide variety of anthro animals to enjoy! That's where my fursona Eyerollz was born.
Now I am approaching my retirement age ( unless they keep raising that age ... the verdict is out on that one, I'll probably end up being one of those wrinkled faces you see in the McDonald's window) and I have been learning all about the Furry Fandom. I hope to be welcomed by those who have been enjoying the friendships they have found, and I hope no one will be put off that I am as old as their grannies. Furries can be anyone. I just want to have fun.

*Put off* by granny-age furries?? That's a plus to me! In my experience, behind your wrinkly faces are the most charming, funny, and unapologetically wise brains more often than not. I'd be lucky to meet a nice greymuzzle like you

Well I don't remember the main reason why I joined the Fandom.
But it's definitely the support of the Fandom that made me truly open up to the Fandom
The support in the community so unbelievable! It encourages us to pass on the baton of emotional support

The main reason i joined the fandom is because i don't like much my life. And the fandom gave me a reason to live it and be happy. I feel a bit like it's an escape for the real world.
I met so many amazing people there and now i almost feel indebted. It really is part of my life, and i try to bring the best of my and my experiences.
And most important, you are part of this

Escapism can make such a difference
Correction, more than an escape it is a distraction. Im aware of everything that happens in my life, but i try not to think about it too much. To not live depressed
I definitely became one because of the art and overall creativity of people in the fandom. It all began when I started drawing. I decided to draw furry art one time, and I absolutely loved it!
I love that!! Honestly the art always has so much detail and emotion behind it!
I’ve heard the furry community can be very supportive and understanding and sometimes it can be opposite, but over all I don’t blame people who feel much more comfortable in the fandom, and I have no problem with the fandom overall considering I’m not apart of anything. Great video!!
Just as any large group of people there will be bad apples and unsupportive people but I’m glad overall it’s pretty supportive ^_^ and now we are furries it’s out time to continue this trend of good bean behaviour
For me it was love at fur-st sight :) the moment I saw a furry in their own context for the first time (that's a weird way of saying Zee the raccoon popped up in my shorts feed) I fell in love! Dove headfirst and never looked back. Today I'm slowly learning fursuit making and hoping to go to my first con next year (Denfur!) wish me luck!

Yeah definitely once I accepted it I fully jumped in and have loved every second of it!
I've always like animals and anthros like Looney Tunes and Animalympics, but I didn't even hear of furry until I was an adult and looking to learn coding. I stumbled across Second Life and Furcadia as ways to at least practice sudo code before I went late to college and I found 90% of the best and most interesting coded objects were all done by these people that had anthro avatars. So I grabbed an anthro avatar to hang out and chat with them and all the other reasons you mentioned fell into place. The amount of creativity for everything in fandom is amazing, you can't find any other group with as many.

I always wanted to be a dragon. Then I discoverd the fandom and found out that i wasn't alone and here I am. I still remember the date when I officially joined

Not a furry myself, though with how much furry related videos I’ve been getting recommended UA-cam seems to think I am.
Either way despite the hate the community usually receives from outside it seems like a pretty chill and cool community. Plus I gotta thank the furry community for their service, who else will run our IT and internet services?
A stereotype for sure but almost every furry I’ve interacted with works in IT.

Same here. I'm ace and rather sensitive to *that* stuff, even had to stop watching furry tiktok because all the "dances" just made me that uncomfortable :( but at least, we're in good company!

I used to tell myself (and husband and others) "I'm no furry. I just really _like_ furry content." first that was no lie. It gradually became one tho.
But it all changed very recently when my brother unexpectedly passed away. It is not like that changed it by itself. It just gave me the conclusion not to lie to myself about it and just engage in the stuff I like since it all is so pointless and life is too short.

i remember my reason to join the fandom really good.
when i was six or so, i was really scared about furries, but i always got a weird feeling when i saw one.
when i was 12, i dreamed about being a furred dragon, i was really scared of my appearance, but at that moment, i knew: there was no turning back, i was doomed to become a furry. so i embraced my fear, i wanted to not be scared anymore, so i won from my fear by becoming it.
about that feeling: i still get it when i see a furry, but i embrace it, because it is part of me.
Ironically I am a crossover from another fandom, I joined in the mid 90s, the furry fandom wasn't well known at the time. Let's just say conventions brought together many different fandoms back then. Excellent video!

The local conventions in my area were comic and sci-fy, but you would always see the occasional fursuiters, so out of curiosity I learned about the fandom from a comic dealer that also happened to be a furry. The rest was history. In my opinion yes I believe it is much easier to find the fandom now more than ever, as it is much more well known, and I'm certainly glad that it is.@@wooflesthewolf

I've always laughed when I tell this story but. . . The thing is I always have preferred none human characters in media and stuff.
Like The Looney tunes or tom and jerry, Sitting ducks. What have ya. For the longest time I didn't know what a furry was and once I figured out what that was I realized I was one.
It's sometimes disheartening reading comments on certain furry videos with People being something like "OH GROSS animal NSFW! Your disgusting!" And I would like to just say, Furries and you know who's aren't the same people. They sometimes can be but more often then not that isn't the case.
The Furry community and the LGBTQ+ community have always been underdogs in my eyes and I hope together we can all work to make this world a more accepting and loving place. Did I just get sidetracked? Dang it. . . . the point is that I was a Furry and I never even knew it. So that's my Story. sorry for the long comment. ;3

Tv tale spin, swat cats, extreme dinosaurs, mlp fim and so much more
I became a furry because, here is my story, I watched top 5 Minecraft music, and I stumbled upon yellow fire, and then I stumbled upon Eric myval and I learned about the furry fandom
The way I turned was pre-furry I think I was a gifted artist and I read the entirety of Wings of Fire, soo that didn't help me escape the ramp.

I must say, I myself was sort of in a strange position. I had literally never known what a furry was before I joined the fandom. I know that probably sounds weird, but like, it makes sense to me. I needed ways to express myself, and I had taken my sudden obsession with foxes and kitsunes to a certain personal level. I only really found the fandom over discord almost on accident, tbh. However, one thing I must say is that I haven't even been in the fandom for a full year yet, and I already feel right at home in it. It just feels like I've always been in it.
Aw I’m glad you feel at home! End of the day being a furry is supposed to be a fun thing and make you feel warm and cosy! So I’m glad you’re having that experience :3 hope you keep that feeling for decades to come!

When I was first made aware of the Furry Fandom, I too used to assume Furries are weirdos that are into weird things.
It wasn't until last year when I started watching furry related (it was Mango Foxy's meme compilations) just because why not.
I then realized how much the fandom has been portrayed so negatively across the media.
I also came to realize what the whole community is all about, and it ain't about fetishes and shit like that (most of the time).
So yeah, that's how I became a Furry and please don't believe everything the media says about certain fandoms.
By the way, I'm currently working on my fursona, I still can't figure it out just yet.
Yeah I think there’s always this general perception that furries are into weird stuff. And we are weird but weird makes us happy ^_^

I love your avatar also I figured out I was a furry after watching zootopia and drawing anthropomorphic characters for 7 years now and I’m 16 so I was 7 when I found out I was a furry and my parents found out I was a furry last week and they are fine with it and they are my biggest supporters on UA-cam and I only have 56 subscribers and mom and dad are my 1st two subscribers and they love my avatar and I made a fursonas for my parents and they appreciate my talent and I own a regulus base and I have a personal regulus named star and she is really cool

I became a furry long before i knew the name for it, simply because of 3 factors or should I say characters. Fox embodies most of what I'm like. Crystal is the kind of person I want by my side, and panther is well...the OTHER side of me. How could anyone grow up with the starfox series without becoming a furry?

In fact, part of furry for me is specifically about learning about and appreciating animals as God's lovely creation. Please, remember that God is the only perfect Judge, and he's given us a Book to tell us exactly what is and isn't okay. If it isn't labeled sin in the Bible, there's no reason to give our faith a bad name by claiming it such yourself.
