I'm watching Band Of Brothers for the first time ever!
I can't wait to experience this iconic Show for the first time! Band Of Brothers is such a beloved Show by so many people and I can't wait to for you all to watch along with me
The story of Easy Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division from 1942 to the end of World War II. A collection of fifty portraits illustrated by archive footage and recounted in voice.
With the war nearly over, the American and German soldiers now fraternize, anxious to simply get home. Nevertheless, Janovec dies in a fluke car accident, ten points short of being able to return to America. Winters discusses how men are still dying, due to an overabundance of weapons, alcohol, and free time.

For all of the achievements and shortcomings of America throughout its history, one of its greatest achievements was sending their best to Europe to fight a war they did not have to fight - they did not fight for treasure or conquest, they fought a war of liberation, then returned home. The honorific of 'The Greatest Generation' is richly deserved.

What you said about Spiers being handsome (when you watch "We Stand Alone Together, you'll see from old photos that he and others were quite good looking in real life), it made me think of a woman interviewed in a documentary series about the Battle of Britain. She worked in the Operations Room where RAF squadrons coordinated and dirested to intercept the Luftwaffe, and although the women there were not suposed to fraternize with the pilots, she and one of the Spitfire piots fell in love. Speaking about the pilots, she said "For some reason, they all happend to be very handsome." Sadly, he was shot down and killed just days after she accepted his marriage proposal. She even heard it as it was happening on the pilots' radio chatter as she worked in the Operations Room, but as heartbroken as she was, she stayed at her station and kept working toi save her country from the invading planes.

Warning, Pacific is not as warm and cuddly as Band of Brothers. It centers on the US Marines island hopping strategy and very gritty in your face battle scenes with a lot of the psychological toll the troops suffered from. When Winters was called back into service during the Korean War, they gave him a choice to either go to Korea or stay stateside and help train airborne officers. He chose to stay stateside. The fact the army gave him a choice showed how much respect they had for him. Winters was the only Army officer that was promoted through the ranks of Lieutenant to Major during the war.

  • @TheGoIsWin21
    @TheGoIsWin21 Рік тому +31

Absolutely do go and watch The Pacific. Its a much harder series to get through, as Band of Brothers is more of a sanitized version to The Pacific's brutal reality, but its just as (if not more) important for people to see.
For a palette cleanser you could probably follow up wirh Generation Kill, which is in the same style but takes place during the 2004 Iraq invasion.
I think those three series together provide a fantastic basis of understanding for civilians about what war is.
Band of Brothers is the nobility and the sacrifice.
Pacific is the struggle and the brutality.
Generation Kill is the absurdity and nonsensical.

My grandfather never talked about the War. I told him I thought he was a hero. So he told me he had to shoot a 12 year old Hitler Youth who had run out of an abandoned home in a village their company was passing through. The kid came out of no where and opened fire on his squad. He shouted to the kid in German to drop his weapon and shot him in the leg to stop him. He hit an artery and held the kid giving him water out of his canteen to comfort him as the kid bled out. When he finished the story he said: "There was nothing heroic about that goddman war." And that was it. He never talked about it again.

As an Australian, you might appreciate "Gallipoli" (1981) which is won Best Film, Best Direction, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Screenplay, and Best Cinematography at the 1981 Australian Film Institute Awards. It's about a group of young Australians who join the ANZACs in WW1. It gives a good portayal of the life, culture and attitudes of young men in Australia in the 1910s and the conditions they faced in the war.

Captain Nixon did indeed divorce twice, the lady, Grace whom he met in 1956 was actually a Japanese-American lady who'd been interred in a camp in the States during the war. When the film crew started interviewing the veterans, they noticed that the men were always surrounded by most of their family members Initially, the cameramen & interviewers thought it was because they thought Spielberg or Tom Hanks would be there, but quickly came to realise that it was because it was the first time their Father/Grandfather etc had spoken at any length about the war, and they wanted to hear him ...

That line from Winters about his grandson asking if he was a hero is not his grandson. Those segments of the real veterans of Easy Company speaking are for a documentary about Easy Company. That line was edited and cut in both the show and that documentary.
In Winters book, Beyond Band of Brothers based on his memoirs, he explains the changes they made in the TV series. That line was one of them.
It was from letter one of his men and veteran of Easy Compnay wrote to him and that veteran was telling the story of what his grandson asked and how he answered. Winters was retelling that letter in the documentary but they edited to make it look like it was a question his grandson asked and he answered.

sobel's story after the war is really sad. he was recalled to the army for the korean war and became an accountant. he married and had three kids but attempted suicide in 1970 by gunshot. the incident left him blind and he spent his last days ( ~17 years) in a VA assisted living home until he died of malnutrition. no memorial service was held in his name...
edit: from what i read he was a good father and husband but the war experience and the experience with easy company haunted him and they ended up getting divorced which led to him being estranged from his family.

Every time I watch Winter speaking at the end, it reminds me of my dad, Bill Young. He served from Feb of ‘41 to Oct of ‘45 in the American 1st infantry division in North Africa and Europe. He was wounded by German mortars in Algeria and carried shell fragments in his back and legs until he died in 2008 at the age of 95. And even though he fought in every campaign in the European theater and was decorated for bravery, he never thought of himself as a hero. He said the heroes were the ones who gave their lives. Dad was always popular in our hometown in Ohio, but his dearest friends were 2 of the soldiers he served with from New York, Martin Konkle and John Mills. On the 65th anniversary of D-Day he told me that not a single day had ever gone by since the end of the war when he hadn’t been reminded of someone he knew or something he’d seen while he was at war. @@MovieJoob I'm reading a book called, "Fierce Valor." It's story of Ronald Speirs. After WW2 he went on to do even more missions. He served in the Korean war and he went on special missions in south east Asia just prior to the Vietnam conflict.
My father was in WW2 Europe right near the end. Step father served in Korea and did the full 26 years of service before retiring. My uncle was in the Pacific in the Navy during WW2. He then joined the Army and went to Korea where he was wounded as well as being a POW for about 8 hours until he was rescued. His Purple Heart was for being hit by a grenade. He almost lost his right arm. He also did 26 years before retiring! Needless to say I come from a military family. I have all my uncles awards, including his Purple Heart. My sister has my step fathers awards.
You need to come visit Texas some time.😊😊🙃💯

Pacific would be awesome continuation, yes its more brutal than Band of Brothers but you survived Hacksaw Ridge, so Pacific shouldn´t be too much of a problem. I would recommend also Clint Eastwood´s double Featurette: Flags of Our Father & Letters from Iwo Jima. Seeing same battle in two different perspective.

    A couple of points…
Australia entered the war in 1939. Diggers fought in Tobruk, Italy, and France, as well as New Guinea for a long time. There are very few of these men left. If you see any of them, stop, ask where they served, tell them their sacrifices made a difference, and thank them. Oh, and if you haven’t seen Gallipoli move it high on your view list.
Germany was defeated. Some Nazis like Hitler and Himmler committed suicide. Many were tried for war crimes at Nuremberg. Some were executed. A few were found not guilty, very few. Some were guilty but didn’t get the death penalty. These people, Rudolf Hess,Albert Speer, were prisoners in Spandau Prison. The command of the prison rotated among the Allied nations. It was a very big deal for Speirs to be the American commander.
Watch The Pacific. It is different from BOB but just as good. Don’t expect to feel the same way.

My dad fought in WW II so I have a huge interest in this series. I’ve watched it many times and I’ve watched many reaction videos. I have to tell you that, of all of the reaction videos I’ve watched, yours are by far my favorite. You focused on the humanity of all of this and, to me, that’s what it’s all about. The people and the effect they had on the war, as well as the effect the war had on them. I teared up several times watching your reaction whereas I rarely do anymore because I’ve watched the show so many times. Thanks you

You made it through, Jade! A very high smiles to tears ratio in this episode. Stephen Ambrose (author of the book) grew up listening to the stories of WW II veterans. The reason so many of them went into construction, teaching and the like is that they'd seen
utter devastation and wanted to build, teach and help the USA become worthy of its heritage.

I adore your reactions, and can see how my last comment might seem insensitive. My family were gypsies, and my uncle served on the U.S.S. Indianapolis. I'm a veteran of Desert Storm, and truly believe everyone should see this series, because it is a very realistic view of what our soldiers, and marines went through. It helps civilians understand what we volunteer to do.
If you want some insight into ANZAC troops, the movie Danger Close, although it is Vietnam, has a good view of that. The song I Was Only 19, by Redgum was written by a survivor of that battle.
Again thank you for watching this and appreciating the sacrifices made by soldiers of any nation.

About the German that Liebgott was hunting:
it would have been very easy to find out if he was a "regular" soldier or a SS man. The SS and Waffen SS had their blood type tattooed on the left side of their torso, on the ribs just below the armpit, while the regular army (German "Heer") did not. In real life this was used to sort out SS and Waffen SS men who were trying to hide amongst the regular army prisoners.
