That was extremely nostalgic! I grew up watching this man. I have always been gifted with a brain that understands what its seeing perfectly almost immediately. I performed every experiment that he said not to do. I'm still here. I'm not an engineer or anything but I could have been. I was a stair builder cabinet maker/ remodeler/finish carpenter. Goldsmith, jewelry maker, Craft beer brewer (don't drink anymore) and so many other things and I think Mr. Wizard helped fuel my passion for learning different things.
You may not see it but there is always a pressure, a force that is pushing in your body right now, all around your body, this pressure is called atmosphere pressure and it's always there. And there is also a pressure within your body, a force that's trying to push out antagonistic to the atmosphere pressure that's pushing in. So this maintains the shape of everything that we see now. Everything that u see from ballons to your body. So if you remove the atmospheric pressure that's pushing in. You are left with the force in your your body that pushes out. So u will be bigger without the atmospheric pressure. However, hard things like metal,diamonds. etc may maintain the shape even without the atmospheric pressure because the force of the bonds that holds together the molecules ignores the presence or absence of atmosphere pressure
When Mr. Wizard said: "You can have a lot of fun with a vacuum pump." The naughty part of my brain thought: Yeah, I bet a lot of guys have fun with a certain kind of pump!
My chemistry teacher showed us this same experiment, but instead of a regular marshmallow, she used a Marshmallow Peep, so it was humorous to see the Peep grow in size in the vacuum created in the bell jar and then shrivel up when atmospheric pressure returned.
