Thank you soooo much!!! I'll be super honest, it took me a couple of years to understand and put to use all this stuff but once you know the concept the information will work at a subliminal level every time you paint ;)

    You, Sir, are KILLING IT!
I will be watching this multiple times and taking notes.
This video is so well structured and info packed, and you've chosen really good examples.
I can't wait for the knowledge to sink in and express itself in my art in the years to come.

😁😍 Thank you sooooo much 😁😍!!! I can assure you (because I had the same experience) that this stuff will become a subroutine in your brain for every time you paint or you see something interesting. It will take some time but everything will become useful: Alfonso Giraldes told me "maybe you don't understand this now but now you know it and you'll understand everything in the future while painting" 😅

Been around for ages and have painted with a few big names of the scene at some point and I must say of all the UA-cam painters I'm aware of, you're the one casting the best light (haha) on the more dedicated miniature painting scene and the deeper artistic concerns of it. At the same time you manage to keep a light tone and remain encouraging at all times.
From what I've heard I imagine to have a similar experience, when I finally take the chance to attend one of Roman Lappats workshops.
    Kudos for your efforts here!
I'll keep a very close eye on your work, while I get back into actually painting stuff after a veeeery long hiatus.

This series on color theory reminds me of art school but you present the material so well - much better than my professors of 30 years ago! Have you ever considered doing a workshop? Hat's off - not yours obviously, but definitely mine
I'll need multiple passes through this extraordinary vid to begin to usefully absorb the sheer spectrum of complexity and possibility but I know the opportunity is there to begin to think like an artist, this is the door to actual composition and not just hoping to fake it.
I also fully realise that if it wasn't you explaining this Marco, with your full disclosure/complete from first principles yet simply explained approach to building understanding then multiple passes would still leave me not much wiser.
The proof is - this is by no means the first vid on colour theory I've watched
It is the first one to leave me with even a sense of what it is I'm needing to grasp to make my colour and contrast decisions with reasoning and intelligence, rather than copying and trying to apply other talented folks colouring choices that I've seen obviously work strikingly to the model in front of me. Including previously stealing some of yours!!!
The door is ajar for me to learn to colour from my own grasp and understanding.
I've done it before from video, if I watch the original cut of the karate kid just 3 more times I get my black belt. Mind I've been waxing on and off for 22years and have worn three cars down to the doorhandles...

Wow! That is a lot. 🤯
I will rewatch this a couple of times and take notes. A big thank you for doing this. It is awesome! 👍
Just one question, when you are working with a more 'grimdark' approach (I was thinking about your Admech tech priest you painted a while ago), do you mix a cold osl for contrast or maybe just go with colour harmonies instead and pick a warm osl? If this makes any sense to anyone...?
Great video, I can't wait until next time. 🙂

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  4 роки тому +1

      😍 yeah a lot of stuff 😅
With the "grimdark palette" you have a lot of freedom for these effects because you usually start from a very desaturated model so the tone for a light effect depends more on the mood and sensation you want to achieve; in a case like this the contrast by saturation and lightness is dominant and the choice of tones is less important

I remember a couple of amazing tutorials by Rusto and Franciuus trying to crack open the topic of values. I tried to find them on the Legiopictorum's website but I get some weird error and can't have access at all. I I can find only the facebook page. Totally unrelated, but congrats for your gold at Monte San Savino 2019 :)

I don't really understand the picture at 9:30, with the 2 columns of similar color labelled warm and cool. Awesome video though. I have so much to learn.

Thanks 😊! In the picture you have the same hues but with different temperatures to show that even the "same colour" can produce contrast just with a temperature change

I am having some trouble with oil washes, at the beginning works great but while applying the last models the oil breaks like when there is not enough pigment. Constantly mixing after applying and still happens. Any idea why?
    Thanks again, amazing work!

Hi Marco! I love your channel, you are doing a great job, im learning a lot with your advices. Now im going to face a new project and i need some help. Do you want to play a game?😈 what colours would you say to pair off with this words: alien, urban, treacherous and technological.

Heyho! I just watched this and I am a bit puzzles by how I should choose my colours to get a vibrant look. I am painting a mini in a very cold - overcast scene. She has blue skin and purple armour with lots of leather. How should I choose warm shadows for this scene? I can not really see how it would work now. I have tried experimenting and one thins I really liked, is how an ultramarine blue mixed with a red made a really nice dark crimson colour. I used this on a red cape and left the shadows a cool blue. But I am not sure how to add warmness to the other areas. Brown also worked nicely in my eyes, though I still have to enforce contrast. There I used glazes of purple mixed with sepia. But I am really puzzled by the purple armour. Should I use something like green? :O

hey Marco. Can you simplify that thing with homework? Can I say if my highlights are greenish my shadows should be deep (dark) red and vice-versa? I guess it another question, but what if my colour is low saturated cyan tending to be cold white in highlights, should I do not just low value "bluish-greeny-white, but make it "warmer" somehow?

The most important thing and the starting point for any piece should be the main environmental light; that sets the temperature of highlights and shadows. In a winter scene even warm tones should have cold highlights and during the sunset even powerful cold tones have warm highlights from the sun.My best suggestion is to study illustrations and pictures in this kind of "extreme conditions". For the contrast of tones trust the color wheel and you can't go wrong!

I heard, colour-blind and people, who cannot see the entire colour spectrum, have a very good sense for contrast...no, idea if that's true.
