Playing the bachelor like a normal person and picking all of the polite options is great because you can just imagine him wanting to do the right thing, but all of the other dialogues are just things he really wants to say to these people since he's so fed up.

There was a part in the game where I realized I was agreeing with all his bad dialogue options because I was so sick of being roadblocked at every turn, and that’s truly (horrible) magical.

Aww. I liked this! Daniil is definitely a character who, transplanted into a kinder setting, would be a jerk with a heart of gold. Oh, man, though, the way he struggles after getting a glimpse past the fourth wall thrills me.

Pathologic REALLY got me into his headspace. I set out to roleplay as best I could, and I fell into it hard. A few days on and I couldn’t really separate his feelings about the situation from my own. When Daniil felt angry about something, I was angry about it too. When Daniil was begrudgingly kind, I was too. When Daniil was conflicted, I was incredibly so. Even though I knew the army arriving would be bad and would disrupt my work, I was relieved when there was someone there with me to deal with the rampant arsonists and infected. This game does an amazing job of making you feel exactly what the character does.

@@PlayheadNorth I love him too. My favourite of all three. He lost so much because of this town, put his own life at risk for other people, despite the fact that its citizens resisted his attempts to save them. At first they didn't even want to believe that there was an epidemic in the town! And then the Bachelor was accused of giving power to the Saburovs? Well, maybe if you weren't morons and immediately recognized that there was an epidemic in the city, this would not have happened?! What other choice did he have? God, such moments just piss me off. Oh, and what were the great saviors Clara and Artemy doing at this time? Artemy tried to survive and deal with his father's inheritance, and Klara recruited people into the sect of her adoptive mother! The only one who dealt with the disease in the early days was the Bachelor! He's done so much for the town, when he really didn't have any obligation to do so. He's just came here to visit some old man, goddamit!
      Sorry, scream of the soul.

@@MrLarva-sn7tz Haha no I totally get the frustration. I think people really do forget that Daniil is why the prices didn’t totally spiral out of control, why the infected districts were cordoned off, why a quarantine ward was set up. All of the shady stuff Saburov did he did without consulting Daniil, and Daniil was horrified at the man’s abuse of power. Daniil may have been misguided sometimes, and he’s definitely arrogant, but he did really try to do the best he could in a truly impossible situation.

love your take on daniil :) he's very easy (and tbh very fun) to mock, but he IS a tragic and complex character. your point that the bachelor's story is the most "emotionally difficult" is really well observed and i think is what makes pathologic so memorable and unique.. even the prickliest of pricks in pathologic are generally trying to do what they think is right, but their personalities and ideologies inevitably do harm. looking forward to the next episodes! :)

I'm sorry, if it has been said already, but there is one line of dialog from conversation with Aglaya that explains why Dankovsky is good with guns. He says that his father was a military officer and wanted Daniil to go into military career as well. So he supposedly received training before disregarding his parents' will and going to study medicine in university. Which ads like a whole new level of sad backstory.
I might not agree with Dankovsky, but in context his perspective is very understandable.
Thank you for the video, it's really fun to listen to other people talk about pathologic, I enjoyed it a lot!

  • @chocolatMouse

Thanks for this essay and your perspective on the bachelor. I was getting irritated by vocal parts of the fandom who decry Daniil as being some one dimensional malevolent racist.
One of the most brilliant things pathologic has done is to make you feel mentally exhausted, when. playing as Daniil. You start of with the best and logical intentions (setting up quarantines, hospital, making a vaccine) but with every step, it seems that you have to drag the town with you kicking and screaming along while trying to save them. Especially when you suffer drawback after drawback, seemingly out of other people's unwillingness or anti-intellectualism.
In the entire pandemic situation nowadays, it strikes at you hard because some people just at first glance don't seem to believe in evidence or listen to reason.

    • @PlayheadNorth
      @PlayheadNorth  3 роки тому +18

Oh my goodness yes! There is so much about this game that seems creepily true to life in the current pandemic.
Daniil definitely has his biases, but I think they stem more from his intellectual elitism than xenophobia. And I really think he does do some growing over the game! (Well, maybe not in Clara’s route, but definitely in the other two.) I also found his perspective on life to be very similar to some professors and other researchers I’ve known, and to be honest, he wasn’t half as bad as some of them. At least there is a part of Daniil that I think genuinely wants to help people.

      Imagine Bachelor living through COVID-19.
(D is for Daniil, T is for Townsfolk)
D: "Are you mad, people? Me and Rubin, we work day and night to make your endangered lives slightly more likely to be preserved, but you can't even force yourself to comply to the most basic of our fairly trivial orders? Can you not muster enough will to wear a piece of cloth over your face? And, when we come up with a vaccine, you cannot help but backstab us with those absurd rumors of our cure spreading mental diseases?! Totum revolutum..."
T: "Doctor, the Powers That Be want us under their boot! Them damn masks and vaccines will make us into their cattle!"
D: "Alright, fuck it. General, nuke them".

the [pained emoji] coolest thing about the willow mellow storyline is that it was pretty clearly based on verdi's opera rigoletto. which makes perfect sense considering what pathologic... is, but also it was wild to be spoiled for the end of that subplot about 150 years before the game actually came out. a delightful progression of "haha, just like rigoletto!" to "oh dear, just like rigoletto", and then finally "ah. just like rigoletto." (fascinating implications likewise that the thing that happens at the end of the opera is not even at the midpoint of daniil's story in the game.)

If you're approaching this situation as a medical doctor would, there is SO much weird arbitrary bullsh*t that gets in your way that it feels completely normal to lose patience. As a player I've found Batchelor's ending gloomy and unsettling. The music, colors and overall tone of the ending roll felt like he was being played by Kains and their lust for power. The image of Town's ruins and Polyhedron, rising from the ground like a giant wasp nest, was utterly frightening.
I feel like idealistic young people like Daniel, Eva and Stamatins are often being manipulated by powerful elites, who pretend to match their ideals but ultimately want immortality for themselves. In Changeling's arc, Stamatins even say that Polyhedron doesn't make sense without people of the town. Peter build it to be a Utopia, but it was used as a body for a one aristocrat fearful of his own death.

I like hbomberguy's video essay on this game, but I felt like he didn't do the Bachelor justice. It mostly consisted of mocking and dismissing him, while there was so much more going on with his route, just as you pointed out: he was a prickly prick, but an idealist who was crushed by the town at every turn, and decided that starting over was the best way to save everyone left.
And really, that's pretty much how his whole route plays. He rescues Andrei Stamatin... but fails to rescue Eva. He saves 6 people from being executed by rogue soldiers... but couldn't get there in time to save the 20 others already killed. He makes a vaccine that keeps people from catching the plague... but can't do anything to cure those already infected.
The Bachelor's route is learning that you can't save everyone, but saving who you can is better than none at all.

Awesome video! Looks like you’re putting together more videos in the future? If I might make a suggestion - putting forward a video with some of your favorite games, a little bit about them, etc - a total of 3 to 10 games would work.
Then perhaps a series on whichever game resonates with your audience in a way that reveals something interesting to you.
So often I see content that is simply the author working out their own thoughts in a video, but no following synthesis where they communicate an idea that actually changes the perception or opinion of some of the audience.
Again, awesome video. Very enjoyable, you move between earnestness and light-hearted gigging gracefully and it makes it so much easier to just sit back, relax and run a terminal command granting you admin access to assimilate your thoughts into mine, the interfacing being an easy follow-along instead of someone trying to shove their errant thinking in through my ears or eyes or whatever is needed.

Feed the algorithm, comment en masse! Great video, by the by. I’m slowly making my way through the game, and I’ve currently got one thing on my mind that’s bugging me about the endings.
We know early on in game that a majority of the children in town are quarantined within the Polyhedron. So... when the Haruspex destroys the Polyhedron, is he also killing several hundred kids in the process? Or is there some event down the line where there’s a mass exodus from the Polyhedron?
I just think that maybe the Bachelor incidentally saved the lives if the town’s next generation, which is weird given that all of Artemy’s bound are the children.

    • @PlayheadNorth
      @PlayheadNorth  3 роки тому +1

That's a totally valid concern! But I think you can assume that the children will be evacuated from the Polyhedron before it's destroyed. I don't know how far you are in the game, but the Kains will be kicking the children out of the Tower regardless, and I think the implication is that they will be out before the army destroys it if you choose the Haruspex ending.

Given the news that has come out about Nikolay Dybowski, I am adding this pinned comment to all of my Pathologic videos. Or at least I've been trying to add this comment. UA-cam keeps deleting them. I think UA-cam believes I'm spamming my own channel. By the way, if you make a comment on one of my videos and it disappears, odds are 90% it was UA-cam. I have deleted exactly one comment myself, and it was 100% spam. I'm seriously so annoyed with UA-cam right now, but typing the comment so it's slightly different from the others seems to help keep it from believing I am, you guessed it, spam.
Basically, there is credible evidence against Nikolay Dybowsky. If you want to look at the evidence against him, follow this link, but please note a content warning for CSA: drive.google.com/file/d/1KeKKptAkn1D662UZYdWWg-mr16YbYK-S/view.
Note: If the link doesn't work, try copying and pasting it into your browser. UA-cam might have disabled it.
In light of this, I want to encourage people to take a look at these allegations for themselves and let their friends who might be interested in Pathologic know about them as well. The rumor is that these allegations have been an open secret around Dybowski for some time, and one of the worst things people in the Pathologic community can do is let them fade into secrecy once more. I am not going to judge you if you want to continue engaging with Pathologic; I am simply asking that you do so with knowledge of this evidence against its creator.
If you would like to do something to help, the following tumblr has some great links for organizations you can donate to: auroraoptica.tumblr.com/post/647700868588863488/hey-everyone-given-the-recent-news-from-twitter.

In that case, they should go to the police and write statement about the crime. Talking about this on the internet will do nothing and will be useless.
If they were over 16, again, there's nothing to talk about.

This looks suspicious. Maybe he slept with children, maybe not - such "evidence" is easy to make about any person. We do not even have victims in this situation, some anonymous sources, but everything has been decided already. This is bad and has nothing to do with justice. It's sad that people forget about presumption of innocence.
      Nikolay Dybowski on this:
I am commenting on the situation. The accusations are false.
I know very well what kind of person distributes them, for what reason and for what purpose she does it.
Last year she already wrote a denunciation to HSE. The HSE Ethics Commission conducted an investigation last year, and they are very strict with these things. All charges were dropped and I was apologized. This information is easy to verify.

Actually have a bathtub on a room like that was kind of normal in the middle age's castles.

I didn't know that! I assume it wasn't normal to sleep in the bathtub though.

A thought that I had is that Daniil only works as a prick. I mean, you need a massive ego to go against all forces of cult and tradition, saying "No, I know what is best, I just arrived here 5 minutes ago, but you are all wrong and I am right". A more humble doctor would have probably just lent assistance in treating the sick or shut himself off after receiving so much pushback from the locals.

It's very true. Sometimes you need someone to be a little stubborn when there a a bunch of obstacles in the way.
