the less manipulation your hair experiences the better for it. (braids, wigs, weave, etc. are all protective), it protects from breakage and damage especialy in the winter, and when your hair rubs on clothes that can even cause split ends. And unless you have kinky curly black hair (loose waves and ringlets dont count) then your opinion on what black women should do with their hair is NOT NEEDED. And as far as "straight" hair goes, for centuries we have been forced to conform to eurocentric beauty standards by assimilation. This topic is not as simple as "pretending to be someone you're not".
Tamanda Itaye yes i know they do but majority of black girls wear weave all the time. You using the word protective that would be for a period of time that's fine but I'm talking about the vast majority of people that can't leave the house without a wig or hair hat on top of their head. I've never worn a with a weave or a wig and my hair is well taken care of and very long so it's just an excuse people use because of their own insecurities. Let's just be real
I agree with you love. I mean my shampoo and conditioner is definitely not $2 because I have virgin hair and like to treat it like royalty lol. But I do agree that sooo much effort is put into curly hair and it is far from messy. My nieces and nephews are half black and I’m utterly in love with their hair. I can’t believe ANYONE would consider curly hair to be messy. I had long hair down to my butt and cut it shoulder length because I wanted to grow it back healthy and my sister in law and other of their family members would ask me why I cut my hair. And I just thought to myself, I am NOT my hair.
Who cares what people say about kinky/curly hair on black women? I think natural hair on a black woman is very pretty and natural hair is versatile. Black women can wear their hair curly, kinky, straight, braids and in Afros and I think natural hair is poppin.

And let's take it a step further, men and women with locs have to self employ or be overqualified for jobs because of the opinions tied to that hairstyle. My supervisor(She's white) last year saw me with my natural curly hair. So the next week I came in to work and I had my hair straightened. She actually told a co worker that I need to keep my hair straightened. So I didn't say anything but you know what I did? I kept wearing my natural curly hair because i think it's beautiful.

This study doesn't surprise me at all!! Any African-American should be able to see those subtle signs, that we (including our hair) are seen as less attractive and our look is seen as distasteful. HOWEVER, that is NOT our problem!
WELL i was mistaken for a "black panther" not long ago. This white lady was following me around the store sneaking pics, another lady let me know. I confronted her very calm and nicely. Y'all this lady RAN and she screamed for help😑😑 lied and said I grabbed her by her throat... police came immediately put me in handcuffs wouldn't listen to me, until I told the store manager to play the recordings from the cameras. showed her following me around for 30mins😑 and me not touching her at all!

I love how the police automatically assume white people are in the right and anything else especially black is always in the wrong. That's how this white police officer got blown away by another white man in my city not too long ago. there was a call saying he was white and armed and dangerous... yet he approaches the man without his weapon and the armed white man shot him down. My husband drives uber and lyft and yesterday someone left him a review saying his dredlocs where "disgusting". People are so amazingly ignorant these days and have such a hard time excepting anything they are not used to. My husbands dreads are beautiful and I retwist them so his hair is always looking nice. It's really is so sad when you think differently about people because of the type of HAIR you have!!!!! HAIR! I work in Corporate America and I wear my natural hair out. I can tell some of my coworkers are uncomfortable by my hair and I could care less. I learned to love my hair the way it is and I wont allow someone to make me feel weird about it.

I've worked in a white community as a batista and I wore my natural in all types of styles such as; mini twists, afros, braids and even twist outs. I even went to my interview with an updo. The people from that area always complimented me on my hair. They loved it. Black girls just embrace your hair and don't worry about what others say.

Eventually some black woman standing up for herself and saying no I'm not changing anything about myself May Spark a Revolution and I think it's already here because our hair has already been political and I see more and more natural sisters every day. I love it however no one wants to be the one to get sacrificed especially in the music industry because not subscribing to what the people cutting your checks want can make you get blacklisted and for a woman who's already had her career put on pause because of past incidents in her life I don't blame her for wanting to just make it easy by throwing on a wig. I lost two jobs for refusing to straighten my hair and take out braids which were called locs in my write up despite them clearly being braids and being neatly done at that. Even up till now I'm paying off debt that I fell into because I ended up jobless for a few months from refusing to straighten my hair or make it "more professional" which really just means less black to them. Part of me wants all black women to stand up and be unapologetically themselves but the other part of me totally understands that it isn't an easy task especially when there are people in control in this world who will politicize something even as small as hair and not accept it and make our actual livelihood too difficult to cope with.

You don't have to always wear your natural hair to love it or speak on it. I wear weave half the year when I want a different style to prevent damage to my own hair that doesn't make me love my own any less. People love their naked bodies or should at least and still wear lingerie when they want something extra 😉

As a black woman with natural nappy hair, I love it.... We are the only people on this planet blessed with such different amazing hair that we can do so much with. Our hair is like art, no one else has hair that can do what ours can do without a ton of glue. Most of the people on this planet have the same straight hair, but not us. We are different in that and I love it, and it is funny how men of other races are chasing us down. White women may/may not found our hair sexy, but their men sure do. You have the right to wear your hair the way you want but can we be really honest here? Is it still "protective styling" if your hair is covered every single day, year in, year out and you never ever ever wear your hair out? And is it really necessary to wear the silkiest hair, and the silkiest frontals with the silkiest baby hair when our hair very clearly does not grow out of our scalps like that? I don't like the message it sends and it just doesn't look right imho. I get wanting to change it up every now and then but some people take it too far. With that being said, I will be making my first wig very soon but the texture of the hair is very close, almost identical to my own hair.
Yes, it's still protective styling. No one should have to wear their hair out if they don't want to. Only that person knows the reasons behind the hairstyles that they chose. For many of us, only having braids with wigs or weaves is what suits our lifestyle best. When I was younger all I wore were braids. Every two weeks I took them out and got it re-braided. Now all I've done these past few years were wear two strand twists with my own hair 100% of the time. I didn't love or hate my hair more then than I do now. I love it, and will never let a relaxer touch it now that it's my touch.
Court Ro Somehow I wasn't thinking of braids when I wrote this. I was more so thinking of wigs and weaves and literally covering up your hair year in, year out. I kind of agree with you (in the sense that your lifestyle doesn't always allow you to wear your hair a certain way) and then I kind of don't agree with you because the whole purpose of protective styling is to protect your hair while trying to grow it out etc. If you're wearing braids and wigs non stop and have no intentions whatsoever of wearing your hair out in the future then what are you protecting it for??

I understand protective styling but many black women always talk about how we should embrace our natural hair but we rarely see them rocking their own natural hair. I'm sure they take off their weaves at home but all the young people who they're talking to (telling them to embrace their natural hair and love it), these young people are watching them and are only seeing the straight weave/hair. As much as we'd like to believe that we CHOOSE to wear the straight look, and we CHOOSE to contour our nose to look straighter, we CHOOSE to brighten up our skin and wear blue contacts, etc, all of this is our minds unconsciously telling us what we think is more beautiful, and that is dangerous to our self-esteem in the long run.
Amen sis! I don't get the 'protective hairstyle thing'. Been natural over ten years and my hair is not damaged since I do not straighten it. Yes it is sometimes a time consuming task to do my hair but I do it because I was not born with straight hair. This is me. Take it or leave it. I feel like some people use the protective style as an excuse for their own insecurities.
People should wear their hair however they please. Everything black people do seems to be scrutinized , when other races pick it up then its okay. I wear my hair natural because I like it and I like easy. For those who don't then that is fine for them. Its all about what you want and how you think you look. When all the white women have their noses done and all the other cosmetic surgery it is about how they look and what other people think, its no different. Women's looks in general are scrutinized too much, so a lot of women have low self esteem. We need to stop being so superficial and judgemental. I heard Adrienne on today's show shading fake baby hair , she said it looked terrible, stop it. It's a style like any other style, if you like it, wear it. Some white model or actress will pick it up and then people will have a different opinion. I think we all need to work on our inner selves and not be so hung up on the exterior . Women in general need to support each other and not be so critical of each others looks. We have worth beyond our looks. Sometimes it's hard to tell.

Honestly I have to say I'm going on my curly hair journey this year and I love my natural curls but I also think there is this stigma that people who don't wear their natural hair often don't love their natural hair... You guys that is called PROTECTIVE STYLING ! People want to protect their hair from chemicals and stuff like that so they can eventually wear their natural hair freely !
I'm a bit baffled why people think that other people's hair is any of their business. And to ask a section of society what they think about the appearance of another section of society makes me feel sick. Personally (not that my opinion on the subject matters) I think WOC have beautiful hair but I try not to judge other women by their appearance but on the content of their character. I'm a woman who likes to build us up, not knock us down.
Black women can have many hair types. I hate that there's a stereotype that black women can't have wavy hair or curly hair without being mixed. Like no you don't have to be mixed. And many black women have those hair types as well, as the stereotypical "nappy" coily more coarser hair. It's real though there is such thing as "good curls" and "bad curls" and it's disgusting because all hair is good hair. As long as it's healthy, then it's good!

I have naturally curly hair and I'm in 8th grade and I was forced to straighten my hair and I was taught that straight hair makes me look better and I believed that and everyone was telling me "oh my gosh where is your curly hair" "why did you straighten it" "go back to curly hair" and I did go back about 4-5 months later and let me tell you I got more compliments in one day with my curly hair then I did in 4-5 months with my straight hair and I've been wearing it natural for about 1-2 months and I still get compliments everyday :)
I am white and I have thick curly hair. When I divorced a couple years ago and started dating I would run across guys on dating apps that would straight out say "if you have curly hair, pass me up, I only date women with long straight hair." I thought what a jerk and oh well he's missing out. Then this past fall I cut my hair from a couple inches below my shoulders to right above my shoulders. It was so freeing because I could wash my hair and let it dry naturally. To not have to get up and blow dry and straighten my hair took off about 40 minutes of my getting ready time each morning. Plus, I love my hair curly. Then a really good male friend made a comment when I posted a pic of my new haircut on Facebook and said "that is youthful." He didn't say how cute or how pretty… I thought it was a little off for him, but gave him the benefit of the doubt. Then around Christmas time I posted a picture taken Christmas Eve. My hair had grown about an inch and a half and I chose to wear it straight that evening. My friend then posted a comment of how gorgeous my hair was. Later on I texted him to ask why he thought my hair was so "gorgeous" that evening. His response was that it was so thick and full he just wanted to run his fingers through it. I asked him why he didn't say that when it was curly and he and said curly hair just doesn't give you that response. I told him that was stupid - that's how I felt. It's the same hair. It's on the same person. However, honestly until I watched this just now, i've been going back-and-forth on whether to get my hair redone the same way or let it grow back long. I like the curly and it's easy... i'm the same person either way and it's the same hair either way… I'm going back to curly!
Then you should date Ethiopian men, they love curly hair. LOL. But seriously, this curly hair vs straight hair thing is kind of new to me. I've always assumed that if you have thick and somewhat long hair, whether it's curly or straight, it's considered sexy. My hair is naturally curly and long, but whether i wear it curly or straight i've never gotten a negative comment from anyone about it. In fact, it seems like men prefer mine when it's curly. I remember when i got a new job i went to work with my hair straightened and when i went outside during lunch break it started raining, so when i came back from lunch my hair was curly because of the rain. All my coworkers, most of them men, told me they really liked it that way and that i should always wear my hair curly. All the guys i've dated have also told me they love my hair, curly or straight. I know that we all have different preferences when it comes to the kind of people we want to date, and there is nothing wrong with that, it's human nature, but i believe that the majority of men don't put that much emphasis on hair when choosing partners. Sometimes i hear men say they prefer women with long hair, but i've never encountered or heard a man say he doesn't date a woman with curly hair. If a man refused to date me because of my hair, to be honest, it wouldn't bother me at all because i know there are many other men who will... I will advise you to do what makes you happy. If wearing your hair curly makes you happy, then do it. If someone doesn't like it, so what. I'm sure you'll find many other men who will love and appreciate you just the way you are... A friend of mine sent me this quote which i like-- "In a society that profits from your self doubt, liking yourself is a rebellious act."
I have thin straight hair so i am so envious of black women's hair whether its natural, curled, corn rolled, puffs, dreads, synthetic, yarn, human you name it i think it is so beautiful and wish that i would have been bless with hair like them. Even despite how it's supposedly hard to manage.

I understand where Loni came from. I worked with a lot of black women on a day to day basis & we would get to talking about our hair. They would come up to me with questions like how I had to take care of it, did it get oily fast, treatments, all that stuff. Which was fine because I would ask them the same questions and it was simply people who wanted to learn from one another. But there were times when they would touch my hair without asking & I would think, "okay, I don't go around touching YOUR hair, why are you touching mine?" - simply because my hair gets very oily when it's touched a lot & if people got oils on their hands or lotion, then that gets into my hair. Questions are cool, learning is great, but please don't touch others without their consent! Thank you!
I find that hard to believe. Why would black women be asking a white woman about hair care when our hair is so different from yours? And why would they touch your hair? I have never in my life wanted to touch a white womans hair. Thats just really wierd
People are absolutely ridiculous. I LOVE my natural hair. Believe me, I didn't always love it. But I think it's so sexy especially that third and fourth day hair when it's voluminous and a little bit frizzy. Natural hair is bomb and I apologize on behalf on the ignorant people out there. Am in malaysia and one day i sat in a salon n the hairdresser was a chinese lady and i took my scarf off and prepared for my hair trim and after she saw my curly hair she said I cant trim this type of hair and she moved to a person next to me and everyone else stare at me i looked so ridiculous and it was the most painful experiences ever because i had to awkwardly wear my hijab back and leave the place and after i did that and went out i cried like a baby! i was just horrified of how rude she was i understand if she is afraid she might trim my hair in a wrong way! but the way she immediately turn around to another customer was what made me feel so bad! so i came back to her n i thought her a lesson! she felt so bad and said sorry so i hope she won't treat someone else the same!
faisa Noah honestly I always wash and comb my hair, lotion my hair, put on a hat and THEN go to barber...it saves time and its easiyer for the barber and saver for me.
That's truly terrible and she handled that situation terribly but all in all take it from me be glad that she didn't trim your hair because I've had countless stylist tell me that they can trim all types of hair then I sit in their chair with my Afro they clearly look puzzled and start hacking away at my poor hair Knowing full well they don't know what they're doing then I end up with the uneven fro 4 weeks

I'm from Spain and I have really thick, curly almost afro hair. All my life people laughed at my hair, boys called my ugly because of that and I had really low self esteem. Now I know it's part of me, you can like it or hate it but I love it because all my friends got straight hair and it makes me different. sorry for my english!

Spain is primarily a white country and as bad as it sounds for them to be judging you, almost anything that stands out from the "majority race" will be judged. How you handle those judgments is up to you. Put those same white spanish ppl in a black country and they would be judged too. It works both ways. Best thing to do is to make your curly hair look really good and soon people will wish they had it. Get braids, dye it.. do cool styles to it. The thing is a lot of people with curly hair don't make use of all the different styles avaialble to them.. they just sit and complain about how they wish they had boring straight hair. I grew up in a majority white school and I wore braids almost all the time, a lot of the white girls in my school wanted to get their hair braided by me and I became somewhat of a trend setter in that regard and they always wanted to play with my hair. This was way before the days where this whole "cultural approrpiation" movement came in and whites can wear braids without any issue. I feel like the world took two steps back in terms of accepting cultural differences.
When I started wearing my hair natural I started getting comments about me “getting a perm” and that it looked “messy”... but when I flat ironed it literally every day people made comments about me spending too much time on it. Notice my hair is only 3A curls so I can’t imagine what other women with type 4 curls go through when they are trying to transition. It takes time and is honestly a skill we should be able to put on a resume, taming natural hair is HARD
I'm glad they are talking about it. I wore my natural hair to work this week for the first time. I couldn't believe some of the comments I got - some people said my hair was nice, others said I looked like 'the help', a poodle and the wine bottle opener we have at the office. I think it's really ridiculous that we have to defend our hair almost.
I've been natural for over a decade now. I went natural in 2002. I went through a several phases with my hair. As a little girl, I was teased by other little black girls about my natural hair. I begged my mom for a relaxer in the second grade to stop the bullying. It didn't per-say, they just graduated grade school and then we moved to a new neighborhood which I had to switch schools for. Then in high school, I remember a girl cross examining me about my "new growth" as I wasn't getting my relaxed fast enough for her liking. Even though how I kept my hair wasn't any of her business and she wasn't even a friend of mine; she just had to be critical. I'll never understand why people pick on others out of their own low self-esteems. The beginning of my self-love, hair love journey came through the Neo-Soul music scene when everyone was bumping Lauryn Hill (who I still LOVE), Jilly from Philly, and Ms. Badu to name a few. Seeing these beautiful Black and unique ladies rock their God given hair gave me the courage to rock mine and I did a "big chop" like India Arie cutting off all of my dead chemically treated hair. Mind you... I had a lot of nay-sayers at first. I had a White co-worker ask me why my hair was so nappy, and man tell me a woman doesn't look soft without long "flowy" hair down her back; although, using the the relaxers were giving me scabs and breaking my "length" off. Even my mom gave me grief at first until some years later she returned to her natural hair. I could share more stories from interviews to bad advice but I know this comment is already super long. Just know I am still natural; loving who I am and the beautiful natural hair God gave me!

Ugh. They say all this...yet all of them are wearing straight hair. Its like preaching to someone about Jesus when youre wearing a hijab. I understand protective styling. I currently have some fleeky crochet box braids in at this very moment. But protective styling doesnt only come in straight wigs. You could wear an afro wig, or 3a-c wigs, or kinky/curly extensions. And they brushed on it, but didnt really speak about the fact that different textures of hair are appreciated more than others. Tamera, like Tracee Ellis Ross, still can get booked with curly hair. Other than sister sister, most people know her for her hair. Loni couldnt get booked. Why? Because of the fact that Tameras mixedness and ambiguity (in both her hair and skin color) is preferred over Lonis unmistakable (and beautiful) blackness in the white supremacist society of which we live. I know it might be difficult, and maybe even hurtful, to express the way that society rejects you...but thats the point. You open the dialogue so that others (me and the MAJORITY of other black women who have kinky and not curly hair) can relate and so other people can open their eyes to the disparities. The flack I got from my mother-in-law alone when I started growing my locs was very surprising because she feels the creamy crack look is much more presentable and yes...prettier. The issue isn't about whether or not black women should be able to rock whatever style they want...the issue is how society perceives the ones that choose to wear what God gave them.

Went natural 4 years ago, couldn't be more in love with it and I feel prettier with my own curls makes my features pop. Yes 4c (the thickest tightest curl) is hard work but it is so beautiful. Wigs help for a break and Winter protection.

My supervisor(She's white) last year saw me with my natural curly hair. So the next week I came in to work and I had my hair straightened. She actually told a co worker that I need to keep my hair straightened. So I didn't say anything but you know what I did? I kept wearing my natural curly hair because i think it's beautiful.

My husband drives uber and lyft and yesterday someone left him a review saying his dredlocs where "disgusting". People are so amazingly ignorant these days and have such a hard time excepting anything they are not used to. My husbands dreads are beautiful and I retwist them so his hair is always looking nice. I work in Corporate America and I wear my natural hair out. I can tell some of my coworkers are uncomfortable by my hair and I could care less. I learned to love my hair the way it is and I wont allow someone to make me feel weird about it.

I've worked in a white community as a batista and I wore my natural in all types of styles such as; mini twists, afros, braids and even twist outs. I even went to my interview with an updo. The people from that area always complimented me on my hair. They loved it. Black girls just embrace your hair and don't worry about what others say.

I lost two jobs for refusing to straighten my hair and take out braids which were called locs in my write up despite them clearly being braids and being neatly done at that. Even up till now I'm paying off debt that I fell into because I ended up jobless for a few months from refusing to straighten my hair or make it "more professional" which really just means less black to them. Part of me wants all black women to stand up and be unapologetically themselves but the other part of me totally understands that it isn't an easy task especially when there are people in control in this world who will politicize something even as small as hair and not accept it and make our actual livelihood too difficult to cope with.

As a black woman with natural nappy hair, I love it.... We are the only people on this planet blessed with such different amazing hair that we can do so much with. Our hair is like art, no one else has hair that can do what ours can do without a ton of glue. Most of the people on this planet have the same straight hair, but not us. You have the right to wear your hair the way you want but can we be really honest here? Is it still "protective styling" if your hair is covered every single day, year in, year out and you never ever ever wear your hair out? And is it really necessary to wear the silkiest hair, and the silkiest frontals with the silkiest baby hair when our hair very clearly does not grow out of our scalps like that? I don't like the message it sends and it just doesn't look right imho. I get wanting to change it up every now and then but some people take it too far. With that being said, I will be making my first wig very soon but the texture of the hair is very close, almost identical to my own hair.

Yes, it's still protective styling. No one should have to wear their hair out if they don't want to. Only that person knows the reasons behind the hairstyles that they chose. For many of us, only having braids with wigs or weaves is what suits our lifestyle best. When I was younger all I wore were braids. Every two weeks I took them out and got it re-braided. Now all I've done these past few years were wear two strand twists with my own hair 100% of the time. I didn't love or hate my hair more then than I do now. I love it, and will never let a relaxer touch it now that it's my touch.
Court Ro Somehow I wasn't thinking of braids when I wrote this. I was more so thinking of wigs and weaves and literally covering up your hair year in, year out. I kind of agree with you (in the sense that your lifestyle doesn't always allow you to wear your hair a certain way) and then I kind of don't agree with you because the whole purpose of protective styling is to protect your hair while trying to grow it out etc. If you're wearing braids and wigs non stop and have no intentions whatsoever of wearing your hair out in the future then what are you protecting it for??

I understand protective styling but many black women always talk about how we should embrace our natural hair but we rarely see them rocking their own natural hair.
I'm sure they take off their weaves at home but all the young people who they're talking to (telling them to embrace their natural hair and love it), these young people are watching them and are only seeing the straight weave/hair.
As much as we'd like to believe that we CHOOSE to wear the straight look, and we CHOOSE to contour our nose to look straighter, we CHOOSE to brighten up our skin and wear blue contacts, etc, all of this is our minds unconsciously telling us what we think is more beautiful, and that is dangerous to our self-esteem in the long run.

Amen sis! I don't get the 'protective hairstyle thing'. Been natural over ten years and my hair is not damaged since I do not straighten it. Yes it is sometimes a time consuming task to do my hair but I do it because I was not born with straight hair. This is me. Take it or leave it.

People should wear their hair however they please. Everything black people do seems to be scrutinized , when other races pick it up then its okay. I wear my hair natural because I like it and I like easy. For those who don't then that is fine for them. Its all about what you want and how you think you look. When all the white women have their noses done and all the other cosmetic surgery it is about how they look and what other people think, its no different. Women's looks in general are scrutinized too much, so a lot of women have low self esteem. We need to stop being so superficial and judgemental. I heard Adrienne on today's show shading fake baby hair , she said it looked terrible, stop it. It's a style like any other style, if you like it, wear it. Some white model or actress will pick it up and then people will have a different opinion. I think we all need to work on our inner selves and not be so hung up on the exterior . Women in general need to support each other and not be so critical of each others looks. We have worth beyond our looks. Sometimes it's hard to tell.

I'm a bit baffled why people think that other people's hair is any of their business. And to ask a section of society what they think about the appearance of another section of society makes me feel sick. Personally (not that my opinion on the subject matters) I think WOC have beautiful hair but I try not to judge other women by their appearance but on the content of their character. I'm a woman who likes to build us up, not knock us down.
Black women can have many hair types. I hate that there's a stereotype that black women can't have wavy hair or curly hair without being mixed. Like no you don't have to be mixed. And many black women have those hair types as well, as the stereotypical "nappy" coily more coarser hair. It's real though there is such thing as "good curls" and "bad curls" and it's disgusting because all hair is good hair. As long as it's healthy, then it's good!

I have naturally curly hair and I'm in 8th grade and I was forced to straighten my hair and I was taught that straight hair makes me look better and I believed that and everyone was telling me "oh my gosh where is your curly hair" "why did you straighten it" "go back to curly hair" and I did go back about 4-5 months later and let me tell you I got more compliments in one day with my curly hair then I did in 4-5 months with my straight hair and I've been wearing it natural for about 1-2 months and I still get compliments everyday :)

I am white and I have thick curly hair. When I divorced a couple years ago and started dating I would run across guys on dating apps that would straight out say "if you have curly hair, pass me up, I only date women with long straight hair." I thought what a jerk and oh well he's missing out. Then this past fall I cut my hair from a couple inches below my shoulders to right above my shoulders. It was so freeing because I could wash my hair and let it dry naturally. To not have to get up and blow dry and straighten my hair took off about 40 minutes of my getting ready time each morning. Plus, I love my hair curly. Then a really good male friend made a comment when I posted a pic of my new haircut on Facebook and said "that is youthful." He didn't say how cute or how pretty… I thought it was a little off for him, but gave him the benefit of the doubt. Then around Christmas time I posted a picture taken Christmas Eve. My hair had grown about an inch and a half and I chose to wear it straight that evening. My friend then posted a comment of how gorgeous my hair was. Later on I texted him to ask why he thought my hair was so "gorgeous" that evening. His response was that it was so thick and full he just wanted to run his fingers through it. I asked him why he didn't say that when it was curly and he and said curly hair just doesn't give you that response. I told him that was stupid - that's how I felt. It's the same hair. It's on the same person. However, honestly until I watched this just now, i've been going back-and-forth on whether to get my hair redone the same way or let it grow back long. I like the curly and it's easy... i'm the same person either way and it's the same hair either way… I'm going back to curly!
Then you should date Ethiopian men, they love curly hair. LOL. But seriously, this curly hair vs straight hair thing is kind of new to me. I've always assumed that if you have thick and somewhat long hair, whether it's curly or straight, it's considered sexy. My hair is naturally curly and long, but whether i wear it curly or straight i've never gotten a negative comment from anyone about it. In fact, it seems like men prefer mine when it's curly. I remember when i got a new job i went to work with my hair straightened and when i went outside during lunch break it started raining, so when i came back from lunch my hair was curly because of the rain. All my coworkers, most of them men, told me they really liked it that way and that i should always wear my hair curly. All the guys i've dated have also told me they love my hair, curly or straight.
I know that we all have different preferences when it comes to the kind of people we want to date, and there is nothing wrong with that, it's human nature, but i believe that the majority of men don't put that much emphasis on hair when choosing partners. Sometimes i hear men say they prefer women with long hair, but i've never encountered or heard a man say he doesn't date a woman with curly hair. If a man refused to date me because of my hair, to be honest, it wouldn't bother me at all because i know there are many other men who will... I will advise you to do what makes you happy. If wearing your hair curly makes you happy, then do it. If someone doesn't like it, so what. I'm sure you'll find many other men who will love and appreciate you just the way you are...

I understand where Loni came from. I worked with a lot of black women on a day to day basis & we would get to talking about our hair. They would come up to me with questions like how I had to take care of it, did it get oily fast, treatments, all that stuff. Which was fine because I would ask them the same questions and it was simply people who wanted to learn from one another. But there were times when they would touch my hair without asking & I would think, "okay, I don't go around touching YOUR hair, why are you touching mine?" - simply because my hair gets very oily when it's touched a lot & if people got oils on their hands or lotion, then that gets into my hair. Questions are cool, learning is great, but please don't touch others without their consent! Thank you!

Am in malaysia and one day i sat in a salon n the hairdresser was a chinese lady and i took my scarf off and prepared for my hair trim and after she saw my curly hair she said I cant trim this type of hair and she moved to a person next to me and everyone else stare at me i looked so ridiculous and it was the most painful experiences ever because i had to awkwardly wear my hijab back and leave the place and after i did that and went out i cried like a baby! i was just horrified of how rude she was i understand if she is afraid she might trim my hair in a wrong way! but the way she immediately turn around to another customer was what made me feel so bad! so i came back to her n i thought her a lesson! she felt so bad and said sorry so i hope she won't treat someone else the same!

That's truly terrible and she handled that situation terribly but all in all take it from me be glad that she didn't trim your hair because I've had countless stylist tell me that they can trim all types of hair then I sit in their chair with my Afro they clearly look puzzled and start hacking away at my poor hair Knowing full well they don't know what they're doing then I end up with the uneven fro 4 weeks

Spain is primarily a white country and as bad as it sounds for them to be judging you, almost anything that stands out from the "majority race" will be judged. How you handle those judgments is up to you. Put those same white spanish ppl in a black country and they would be judged too. It works both ways. Best thing to do is to make your curly hair look really good and soon people will wish they had it. Get braids, dye it.. do cool styles to it. The thing is a lot of people with curly hair don't make use of all the different styles avaialble to them.. they just sit and complain about how they wish they had boring straight hair. I grew up in a majority white school and I wore braids almost all the time, a lot of the white girls in my school wanted to get their hair braided by me and I became somewhat of a trend setter in that regard and they always wanted to play with my hair. This was way before the days where this whole "cultural approrpiation" movement came in and whites can wear braids without any issue. I feel like the world took two steps back in terms of accepting cultural differences.
When I started wearing my hair natural I started getting comments about me “getting a perm” and that it looked “messy”... but when I flat ironed it literally every day people made comments about me spending too much time on it. Notice my hair is only 3A curls so I can’t imagine what other women with type 4 curls go through when they are trying to transition. It takes time and is honestly a skill we should be able to put on a resume, taming natural hair is HARD
I'm glad they are talking about it. I wore my natural hair to work this week for the first time. I couldn't believe some of the comments I got - some people said my hair was nice, others said I looked like 'the help', a poodle and the wine bottle opener we have at the office. I think it's really ridiculous that we have to defend our hair almost.
I've been natural for over a decade now. I went natural in 2002. I went through a several phases with my hair. As a little girl, I was teased by other little black girls about my natural hair. I begged my mom for a relaxer in the second grade to stop the bullying. It didn't per-say, they just graduated grade school and then we moved to a new neighborhood which I had to switch schools for. Then in high school, I remember a girl cross examining me about my "new growth" as I wasn't getting my relaxed fast enough for her liking. Even though how I kept my hair wasn't any of her business and she wasn't even a friend of mine; she just had to be critical. I'll never understand why people pick on others out of their own low self-esteems.
The beginning of my self-love, hair love journey came through the Neo-Soul music scene when everyone was bumping Lauryn Hill (who I still LOVE), Jilly from Philly, and Ms. Badu to name a few. Seeing these beautiful Black and unique ladies rock their God given hair gave me the courage to rock mine and I did a "big chop" like India Arie cutting off all of my dead chemically treated hair. Mind you... I had a lot of nay-sayers at first. I had a White co-worker ask me why my hair was so nappy, and man tell me a woman doesn't look soft without long "flowy" hair down her back; although, using the the relaxers were giving me scabs and breaking my "length" off. Even my mom gave me grief at first until some years later she returned to her natural hair. I could share more stories from interviews to bad advice but I know this comment is already super long. Just know I am still natural; loving who I am and the beautiful natural hair God gave me!

I love that your talking about this because I wanted a answer for it. I watch sister/sister and it was amazing but at the beginning you guys had your Curly hair and that was the thing I love the most but then it when from curly to straight hair. I was furious because I didn't understand why. I stopped watching it for like two weeks before I continue because i was mad. I needed to wrap my head around why but I honestly love it. Ugh. They say all this...yet all of them are wearing straight hair. Its like preaching to someone about Jesus when youre wearing a hijab. I understand protective styling. I currently have some fleeky crochet box braids in at this very moment. But protective styling doesnt only come in straight wigs. You could wear an afro wig, or 3a-c wigs, or kinky/curly extensions. And they brushed on it, but didnt really speak about the fact that different textures of hair are appreciated more than others. Tamera, like Tracee Ellis Ross, still can get booked with curly hair. Other than sister sister, most people know her for her hair. Loni couldnt get booked. Why? Because of the fact that Tameras mixedness and ambiguity (in both her hair and skin color) is preferred over Lonis unmistakable (and beautiful) blackness in the white supremacist society of which we live. I know it might be difficult, and maybe even hurtful, to express the way that society rejects you...but thats the point. You open the dialogue so that others (me and the MAJORITY of other black women who have kinky and not curly hair) can relate and so other people can open their eyes to the disparities. 25MKool, I agree that just because they're black, they don't have to rock curly/frizzy hair...but the point of the discussion is that curly/frizzy hair is looked down upon, even amongst black people. The flack I got from my mother-in-law alone when I started growing my locs was very surprising because she feels the creamy crack look is much more presentable and yes...prettier. The issue isn't about whether or not black women should be able to rock whatever style they want...the issue is how society perceives the ones that choose to wear what God gave them.

There's an issue in that comment alone that I wanted to point out. I understand the bigger picture and everything you're saying. Tamera as a black girl I grew up watching you and Tia on Sister Sister and always admired your curly hair. Then you straightened it and I was sad for a while but then because you guys were my idols I straightened mine at thirteen and it was the worst thing i could hvae done. It cause so much low self esteem for me for years with hair damage and that my hair could stay straight and beautiful bcz my mom didnt have money. Now a naturalista for a decade now in my thirties hearing you be truthful about your hair damage is empowering to me and I am glad you can be honest about it.

Ana Muslimah yes because you know that for sure please shut up majority of black women who do have natural hair under their weaves do so to protect their natural hair if I want to wear a straight style I'm not going to heat damage my hair I'm going to wear a weave if I want red blue or blonde hair I'm not about to bleach and dye my own natural hair I'm going to wear a weave if it's cold as f*** outside and I don't have the possible time in my life too wet my hair which will make me sick then add a cream and oil to my hair every single morning before I go out and every single evening when I come back home I'm going to put on a weave hell if it's spring break and I'm going on vacation and I know I'm about to be in the pool or the beach and I'm going to have to wash my hair every single day and I don't have the time nor do I want to spend the time on restyling my hair every single day while I'm trying to enjoy my vacation which will take up at least 2 hours as thick as my main is I'm going to throw in a weave. Stop pretending like you get to speak for all black women they already explained that of course straighter hair is more acceptable and they have dealt with that in their careers but both women have natural hair and do wear it time to time by the way but when you're living A busy life it's far easier and much safer on your own hair to just wear weave
Went natural 4 years ago, couldn't be more in love with it and I feel prettier with my own curls makes my features pop. Yes 4c (the thickest tightest curl) is hard work but it is so beautiful. Wigs help for a break and Winter protection.

I'm Latina and black, and my aunties tried to relax my hair once and it burned my scalp. I've accepted the fact that my hair is curly, and there's nothing wrong with that. Embrace your hair... :0)
As a young black woman, I want to learn how to embrace and care for my natural hair so I can teach my future daughters how to do the same. I wouldn’t want my daughters to feel insecure and become misinformed about their hair they were blessed with.

Woo, JA...JA has issues period. The whole skin bleaching movement & such...Again, I can only speak about my experiences. I wasn't rich nor did i have long twists, but I was the head girl of my school & the top performer. The girls with long hair were not, so everyone's experiences are different.

That's great that you were head girl (the head girl at my high school was coolie) and I know is not only the long haired girl that's smart or whatever. I was just making the point that just cos you were coolie doesn't mean you were automatically praised. its nuts that you have to wear your hair to make others feel comfy or accept you, you should wear your hair the way you like it, you can still make your hair look clean and neat or professional depending on where you are but that doesnt mean you have to change the texture or color of your natural hair , your natural hair can look professional and neat if its clean and groomed well, no need for it to be straight and blonde
Sister, Sister was my favorite show as a kid and I LOVED Tia and Tamera's curly hair! I wished mine looked like that.
My favorite show too as a teenager, and I'm now in my late 30s.
I know I probably sound like a hypocrite with this wig in my avi but I'd to see Loni and Tamera wear their natural hair on the show more. Especially Loni.
