EP. 12 - Custom Fuel Cap Mount: Airplane Motor Volkswagen Build!

  • On this episode we create a metal buck to press form sheet metal. We create a recessed mount to hold our Aircraft inspired Fuel cap. This replaces the factory door and fuel cap. This subtle but bold piece compliments the rest of our "Aircraft" themed pieces. All inspired by the Radial Motion motor shoe horned into the back on the split window Volkswagen Bus.

Tip from an old tool maker! If you cut your center hole before you press your part, you will get a lot less distortion. The center hole will grow as you press, so cut it undersize, then trim to size as a final operation.

In the aircraft industry, openings, nuts and such are always facing in opposite direction of travel. Leave the cap the way it is on the video. I’m building a 1929 Stuz Model M Coupe clone.

Position the cap so if the latch fails, the cap is held closed by the slip stream of forward movement. That’s how we do it in aviation.

The attention to design/artistry and execution/fabrication is magnificent! A-and the explanation of your process with the videography (camera shot from inside watching you) is as good as it gets! This Combie is just breath taking....so subtle and over the top at the same time (Juxtaposition? Oxymoron?)! Josh...Drink! Go Benntts Customs, keep moving forward!

Thank you for not calling the filler cap a subtle change! I personally prefer smooth filler caps, but it does look good, and breaks up the slab sided bus.

gt40 had the catch to the rear. Good enough for Le Mans, good enough for here

The 2nd positional option makes more sense. Nice neat installation, as usual, Jordan.

Love the concept of the fuel filler in the stock location but with a custom cap. Numerous small fine details throughout the build really make a unique, amazing car! It’s really something.

Another benefit to having it in the 2nd position is that if you happened to not close the cap all the way, the wind would help hold it shut vs holding it open and allow dust/dirt to blow in before you discover and close it. I like the look of this option vs the big plate with the swirling detail. It blends better with the look of the vehicle IMO.

Hey Jordan, very nice work on the weld-in plate for the fuel filler cap. I like the second position of the flip cap. I.E., the release tab on the rear-side, and the filler cap hinge on the front-side. That way, the wind pressure would tend to keep the cap closed (and not a suicide door effect if the cap were to pop open).

I’d say leave the latch towed the rear of the bus, just like you had it at the end of the video. Newer subscriber here and I love the attention to detail. Very nice work, you have a lot of older videos I need to catch up on. I’m working swapping in a Chevy 350 into a s10 blazer. From Spokane Washington

I'm building a 600 pound mobile bar for a catering hall in my neighborhood. But more than that, I'm building suspense for this VW van that you're building. I have a definite deadline for the mobile bar. What the heck is going on with the owner of the van? Does he (or she) have unlimited funds/patience? How can I find me some clients like this?!? Don't get me wrong; I LOVE your work, but Australians must be born with WAY more patience than Americans. Over here, they want it NOW!!!

Nice work! I think I'd put it on with the latch at the back so that if someone forgets to close it the wind will push it closed instead of open. Also, if something hits the latch the latch will give and be less likely to break. I don't think I'd ever be able to do this with the paint job this far along. I'd be terrified of banging or scratching the paint up.

Thats pretty cool looking piece you made there!
I have used same stamping method with hydraulic press few times. Only thing i have done differently is, that i have made a hole in middle of pieces like that and locked the top die with a pin to the hole, so the top die doesnt move around when pressing it. And if there is no holes of the piece that i am working with, i have made a support bar for the top die and drilled guideholes on the bars ends. And i've make pins on the lower die, for the guide holes Well, keep up the good work!

Cap mechanism to the rear. Aircraft-wise; direction of flight. If activated, air pressure will keep it in a closed (ish) position. Love watching this bus project develop as your Aussie accent follows suit. Cheers from America!

Nice work forming that piece and welding it in without distorting Jordan, the fuel cap reminded me of the XC Coupe I had, the filler was mounted hinge to the front that way it would lay flat if you forgot to latch it, this is going to be one cool bus when its done! When's the big move on... the new location wouldnt be near a winery by chance? Cheers Greg

Latch at the back. Looks better and in the case that it doesn't get latched properly, the cap won't fly open in the wind and bang against the paintwork.

My take is you did the best you could to make something that looks out of place as least invasive as possible. That cap looks more like an RV water tank fill or waste tank cap than a fuel fill - it definitely isn't anything I would choose to install on a billboard flat side panel.

  • @funwithcars3154
    @funwithcars3154 3 місяці тому

My thoughts on the fuel cap: Aesthetically I prefer the second position, it looks better. The other advantage is if the driver forgets to close the cap after filling, the wind when moving will at least allow it to mostly close and hence less chance of getting debris getting in the tank. My only concern in this position though is the cap release mechanism. At 100kmh could the wind possibly generate enough pressure at the tip of the cap release to open in?
Also, I’m only new to your channel but am enjoying the content and your quality of workmanship. Keep it up mate 👍

Did you consider before pressing the round depression, cut the hole first so the metal can pull from the hole instead of from around the perimeter of the part? Make the hole smaller than needed to start out because it's going to get bigger as you press.

I vote gas cap option 2, latch toward the back. Maybe it’s my aviation background speaking, but my eye wants access doors, hatches, flaps, etc to flow closed with the air stream, not open.

latch towards the back if it does happen to open during driving for instance in a rainstorm it won't open and funnel water into the gas tank .

Artistic impression is an acquired taste. So, no-one can really say what would be a better option.
So, because we were asked about opinions, here is mine. I love the fuel cap. And get the idea of sticking to the Aircraft theme. However, it looks too bulky sticking out on the side. I would have liked it to be more flush. I understand this fuel cap design doesn't allow that kind of movement. This fuel cap with a (press to) pop out function would have been killer.
Keep up the good artistic work!
