Y'all don't understand how influential she is... Miss Janet Jackson set the tone and structure with this video and then came Rhythm Nation... GOAT status
The amount of artists that have cited this video as a game changer and so influential on their own career. It was released in 1987. Everyone wanted to be Janet.
I only saw her once, after she got married and was performing head to toe in all black. Wish I’d seen her in her young prime! It was still amazing just seeing her on stage. She’s still touring so you may be able to catch her before she hangs up her dancing shoes! I’ll pray you do! ♥️
Facts! And STILL has the scar(s) from the inevitable fall that came when we all tried it! 😂 Our lil lives flashed before us several times the day we did! Which reminds me, Ms. Jackson? U owe many a clinic payment to us 80s babies! Damn chair!😂🤦🏾♀️🪑🤸🏾♀️💃🏾📻📼
This video shows pure talent. No dancers, no special effects, no location changes - just JANET 🔥 stars like JLo often mentioned that this video is the reason why they started dancing. It changed the game forever! JANET THE BLUEPRINT
Janet was holding her own against Madonna back in the last half of the 80s through the 90s. And definitely gave her brother Michael a run for his money.
This was Janets transformation toward the end of her album. She had been wearing allll those layers of clothes, BIG 80's hair, she was thicker, ALWAYS had all those ppl and dancers in previous videos...but as a later release on the album, PEOPLE WERE SHOCKED at Janets new look. Straight hair, t-shirt and jeans, had lost a lot of weight and looked fabulous like working out and that tiny waist...and BRILLIANT with her new look to have all focus on her...just her dancing in a warehouse. New Janet had arrived, and slayed it. I remember dj's on the radio would be like "HAVE YOU SEEN THE NEW JANET!", lol. Song and video always my fav Janet! Compare this new look to "When I Think of You" released first off the album, and then by the last release Janet stunned looking like this.
I really need people to understand just how iconic this video was at this time. The 80's was the eptiome of frills, bright clothes, heavy makeup and big curly hair for women. The sleek hair, black clothes and simple makeup in this video were a total gamechanger, especially since they made up a look that most girls & women could emulate. And most videos were doing the most in terms of set design and backing dancers in this decade, as we can see ftom Janet's own work, so the industrial set and solo dancing was another gamechanger. The lyrics for this song and the Control album in general were a million miles away from what we had heard in most black music before, no more Saving All My Love For You. Janet knew what she wanted and she wasn't going to be satisfied with anything less. This was the original Girl Power. It's almost impossible to choose, but I really think this might be my favourite Janet video and even one of my favourite videos of all time by any artist. I still get a shiver up my spine when she puts her hand in front of her face. ❤
Janet Jackson is the BLUEPRINT for many female performers of yesterday and today . She celebrated 51 years in the entertainment industry since the age of 7 in Las Vegas with her siblings. She just ended her U.S. Tour at the age of 58 with rave reviews, Janet Jackson is PHENOMENAL !
This video is - for my money - Janet's greatest video ever. This video was like a lightning bolt at the time. She was showing she doesn't need anything but the song and her dancing to make for riveting entertainment. This was groundbreaking. And the song is a BANGER.
She is the blueprint of what super star means !! No need dancers just herself and it’s enough to make you starring at her for whole five minutes ❤Janet Jackson is so talented ❤
The Blueprint. Miss Jackson built the house that allll these dance chicks can now live in. Hands down the best Female Dance Video Of All Time. So glad you guys did this video.
I’m old and was around her age when this video came out and I didn’t even know that. I always thought she used a double. I love learning something new. Thanks for sharing! ♥️👏🏾
This video is absolutely timeless. I’m an elder statesman of the Rhythm Nation and I remember the night this video premiered. I taped it and watched it over and over and over again. It holds up. Janet is a force! I just love her so much❤️
“The classic waving the head and hand around” is actually an iconic hip hop/r&b dance move called “the whop”. LL Cool J and others have referenced it in their songs. In his song I’m Bad, he says 🎶I’ll make you say ‘Go LL!’ and do the whop🎶
This is the Minneapolis sound incase you didn't know. Lots of artist in the 80s and early 90s produced by jam and Lewis had this sound. One of my fave up beat songs of her! It's timeless!
Last time I saw Janet live in concert was in 2017. So she was over 50 already. All her backup dancers were 17 and 18 years old, but she was keeping up! She's always been good.
She's still such a baby here but she had already been married and divorced! So she really makes you believe she's already had her heart broken ten times
I’ve followed her career all my life, being two years older than her. I don’t think y’all understand, she is truly a living legend, started performing at the age of just 7 years old along with her brothers and sisters, she has performed with legends like Cher and Carol Burnett, Sammy Davis Jr, and many others you wouldn’t know. I saw her latest tour just last month. She has been in the business 51 years ! She’s now 58 and still tearing up the stage.
9:59 Mike that dance move was known as The Wop and was quite popular with kids at the time. You can find tutorials online. Janet was most famous for doing another move known as The Snake. I feel so cheesy knowing all of this. 😂
Well at least you’re not alone in your cheesiness. 😂 I just left a similar comment about the dance and talked about LL referencing it in I’m Bad. So we both know random facts. 😂
You guys nailed the Ready for the world comparison. It’s all the Minneapolis sound from the late 80s. The writer of this song is from the Prince camp, he was also a member of the group “the Time”. Jam and Lewis produced most of the album in the vein of the Minneapolis sound.
And the fact that mainstream music is the opposite of this today is really affecting young people's mental health, in my opinion. I'm glad that the younger generations are rediscovering this music.
This is my favorite Janet video and I practiced this choreography all the time and still remember every bit of it. Back then, I could do it all except the back flip and split. Great reaction.
This video is TOP TIER. Pure talent at its best. She inspired me with this video when I was young. I performed this song for my highschool pep rally and shut ish down 😂
Just realized Victoria Monet's last look in the 'Alright' video reminds me of Janet's hairstyle and hand choreo in this video. (We need a Victoria Monet week one of these days)
This version of the song is almost a total remake of the original version recorded by her and can only be found on the video. It has added vocals and instrumentation which makes it significantly better than the original.
I was a teenager when this video came out, and I remember not wanting it to end because I knew I would have to wait a week to have to see it again. This is why I appreciate UA-cam because I can revisit my faves as often as I want . Sidenote: The world needs more people like Mike and Joe. The two of you rock and I love your channel.
I just love you guys..I just do.i so appreciate your recent reactions to all genre's of music especially with me being a 70s 80s kid..this ms Jackson week and the other one only reminds me just how influential and amazing she was and is.. Even if you don't react to it you must watch the videos Miss You Much, Doesn't Really Matter and Anytime Anyplace ( this one is HOTT) oh and the beautifully videoed AGAIN..Keep up the great work fellas and thank you Again
The music video and good cinematography in music videos all came from Michael Jackson. He set the bar and raised it constantly. His short films (he hated the word music video. He had it band on his set) got so big, that in the 90s, they would premiere in primetime on all the major networks: Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS, MTV, VH1, and BET Unfortunately with his passing, the bar has descended lower and lower.
Janet was a regular on the hit TV show Fame. So she is more than just a street dancer. And knock off the 70’s talk the era of Solid Gold, John Travolta and the “Hustle”😂
Ooo I thought this would be number one, now I'm so curious about the rest of the list. Also the chair move lives rent free in my head even till this day.
This was not produced by Jam and Lewis as the rest of the album was. It was produced by fellow Time member Monte Moir. Can we praise Janet's vocals on this track too, and I mean the lead vocal, not the backgrounds.
I love Janet Jackson I'm a huge fan of her she is a legend and iconic thank you for reaction to her songs many people don't understand how iconic Janet is that why I still love her to this day Janet 🤘
You guys would’ve enjoyed the 80’s. I mean I was 6-16yo so I probably see it largely through a preteen’s eyes but I thought it was a blast. The movies, music, TV and toys were all so fun.

The flip off the chair was really her. She took gymnastics as a child.
Where Ciara draws her inspiration from when it comes to dancing! You'll notice some of these moves in Ciara's music video Ride and Promise.
Exactly. You can totally tell Janet is very much her inspiration and idol.
Just know Janet is the Blueprint and did it first!

Rhythm Nation and Miss you .much IMO
She reportedly did the back flip exactly once and they captured it. But the way it was edited made folks think she used a double.
I’m old and was around her age when this video came out and I didn’t even know that. I always thought she used a double. I love learning something new. Thanks for sharing! ♥️👏🏾
I actually never thought it was a double. I knew it was her and never questioned it.

no Britney, Bey, Ciara, Normani, Victoria, I could go on, without Janet.
