You have to consider that during the game against Germany, Turkey almost had no players left from the A team. The manager even thought about brining in a goal keeper as midfielder.

This game was just incredible. Turkey were the underdogs and had sooooo many injuries and suspensions if I remember correctly. They were playing like 5 or 6 reserve players and equalised with the last kick of the game. Just amazing

Putting the result aside, I can say this was one of the best matches I saw. It was intense the whole time, from start to finish with amazing plays! Both teams had wonderful players and were at their prime.

This match was the most painful match to watch for me.
My favourite player Klasnic who just scored his first goal for croatia after returning from his long break due to kidney failure made me burst into tears, i was so happy until turkey equalized it and destroyed that perfect comeback. I'll never forget this game.

im a daughter of Turkish immigrants living in Vienna and let me tell you i was 10 years old back then. My mum spontaneously bought last minute tickets for the two of us from some random dude and we got in just minutes after the national hymns were sung! We won so closely and celebrated until the next day. the whole community was out on the streets celebrating and just having fun! it was an epic night. none of us knew it would be a legendary match! so thankful for the memories. thanks mum, i love you

This has to end up on a sports highlight reels as one of the most epic losses in sporting history. Croatia had this locked up with mere seconds left in extra time and the Turks equalize with milliseconds left. The Croatian players went from complete euphoria and joy to abject shock in a matter fo minutes. Stunning loss.

I was watching from Baghdad Iraq, i was so happy for Turkey
That was the day three things happened.
1) My heart broke. I remember the room I was in, I remember the smell, I remember the heat, I remember my friend Neno crying, Kiko storming out, Milan and Nino standing in silence and I remember me putting my foot through the TV. That feeling of powerlessness, pain, lack of breath and then ANGER. Like someone kicked me in the nuts from behind. Plenty of that feeling was visible on anyone anywhere in the streets for a week. Since then I've never felt THAT excitement and joy when Croatian national team plays, not even in Russia. I was excited and joyfull, but not as much as before.
2) I swore to myself never to watch Croatian team play unless it's the knockout stage in world cup. I was not going to get kicked again. There were always some calculations around the team: "if that team wins we can play draw, but if we lose then another team has to win 3:0 and if that doesn't happen then....oh, our plans backfired. Pack your bags guys, we are going home again." My health got a lot better.
3) I learned a life lesson: Its not over until its over. No relaxing, no stopping and no celebrating until the things at hand are officially over. Turkey partly won because it's sooooo common in Croatia to do that mistake, not just in sports. What's great is that Croatian team learned that lesson too. It took them 10 years, but they learned. And won silver.
That is how much of a milestone this game was and is for me.

Even that day i knew Rakitic and Modric would be great stars so i was sad for them they lost the game. 10 years later we, Turkey, couldn't make it to World Cup finals , but I was there in Moscow supporting Croatians, watched matches among them, delighted to see Rakitic and Modric who played excellent during tournament and carried Croatia to final.

As a greek I may dislike Turkey up to some point but in that tournament they gave us some very fascinating and memorable matches. They always played attacking and agressive football and this was the reason i wanted them more in the 2006 world cup instead of the boring (as proved) Switzerland.

What is strange about Turkey is the further they go on a tournament the better they are, probably based on moral and thirst of victory pushing them to do their best until the last seconds ? In any case their level before and after entering a tournament change drastically.

i was watching this game with a croatian girl friend in izmir, turkey. being a 35 yr old fella, i can say this was one of the wildest football moments i ever watched. we were on the lucky side that night and i wanted to celebrate like nuts. but as soon as i saw my croatian friend's face, all my happiness was gone. seing her so down really touched me. that was the moment that taught me it's not al about winning, respecting your opponents matters most.
ps: later we watched also world cup 2018 final together in zagreb, but again i had nothing to celebrate at the end :)
Still remember this was the only match where I cried afterwards. Rewind 10 years forward and I cried after one more match, but that one was against England and they were happy tears :)
