My Dad had the Mk5 when it FIRST came out. Had it made for him, VW sent him pictures of it being made IN THE FACTORY. It was a United Gray, number 117/5000. I will never EVER forget that car. It was the greatest car I've ever been in to this day.
I have one in United Grey, also. Mine is 3915/5000. It's high mileage, and I have been refreshing A LOT of small little things on it to keep it up to date, but the one thing I have not had to do anything to is that amazing 3.2 VR6. It's a thing of wonder :)
Two years into ownership I do love it. It balances comfort and performance well so it's great to live with. The downside is the crazy tax and fuel consumption. But honestly people moan it isn't quick enough: it definitely is, it sits in the "powerful enough to have fun and not kill yourself or lose your license" category. Comparing it to 400HP models as people do is silly.
Its plenty quick enough to get you into trouble in the wrong hands . Why would you need 400hp and where would you use that sort of power. There's always a car just ahead forcing you to slow down anyway..

As an owner of a Mk V R32 (4588), I can say that it's the most fun/functional daily that I've ever owned. And once it hits 200k miles, it's going to earn a place of weekender status. I'll only part with it for a princely sum! Well done video!
My friend always called the R32 Golf Wookie/Chewbacca for how it roared, such a fantastic sound. I love the Mk 7/7.5 Golf R's, but I do wish they kept the VR6.
It's not just your friend it's a well known reference for any VR to be called a Wookie, every year in the US there's a meetup called "Wookies in the woods" where fellow VR6 owners meet up to drive the infamous Dragon which is a road course with over 300 curves in the Appalachian mountains.
You mean VR6 warble. It's very distinctive and unique in its sound. A very narrow angle V6 with uneven intake spacing and the firing order of an inline 6.

Just sold mine. Loved it. I don't miss the 600 + pounds tax per year and constant visits to the petrol station. Still I had on choice but to sell... it was a 2007 with 85000 miles and it went for 13 grand . Gutted still.

Went from an Edition 30 to a 911 to an R32 then a C63 onto an M4 and then back to a Merc. The Merc goes on Friday to make way for another R32. I used to own the plate V6 VAG. Got to say the R32 ticked everybox.
Have the candy white mk5 R32, I bought it in 2020 for 8k usd. Been getting offers from other people but I tell them it’s not for sale. Highest offer I got was $15k. It’s one of the best cars I own. I use it as a weekend car and I use my mk5 GTI as the daily.
Takes me back to my Mk5 R32 3 door manual in lapiz blue, loved that car 💙💙. . .current ride is a similar spec golf 7.5R, another great car but miss the sweet sound of that purring V6 engine 😎
Eh, I mean it's still a Golf 5 body, it's very much a love or hate relationship for these, hence why this chassis is still the only one which got a makeover big enough and in such a short period for the refresh to be called Golf 6. The Golf 4 R32 on the other hand... A fabrication black pearl coloured one of those would fetch a fortune right now.
Underrated because it isn't that fast, an edition 30 would annihilate an R32 all day long, that's my reading of it when people use that word. I love six cylinder golfs, all I've owned this last 22yrs so I'm not hating on the R32👍

The mk4 is the one and prices reflect that. I'm biased as I have a MK4 R32 and was never keen on the MK5 styling both exterior and out. Manual over dual clutch also for collectibility as well! Mk5 did have better chassis though. As for a MK5 the R32 is the best looking out of the MK5. There's a blue MK4 R32 ON BAT right now with low miles could be another 60k example?!
Solid review! I love the Mk5 R32, so much so that I'm on my 3rd one. Every time I sell one, I miss it and start looking for another. I don't think I'm gonna let this one go though.

Gladly they made a bit more powerful 3.6 VR6 (which is still in production & available for the huge car... Atlas, or whatever that car was called again). I also have the 3.6 in my Passat CC. Wanted a Golf R32, but then I decided I wanted a bit more power and a slightly newer interior. Oh, and also mk3 had a Syncro version with the 2.9 VR6, but surely mk4 had the first R-named model.

Vr6 motors are just the best sounding engine. Imo. As a VW fan boy, I was close to getting a Mk5 golf vr, but went with the ed30. Great cars, but gone back to my roots with the g60 corrado. When he said it was the worst car I was also 'done' with him 😂

loved mine, had it for 4 years from stock and turbocharged it. Great cars but woefully underpowered and really needed a supercharger from factory. Great sound though.
Its heavy compared to the gti, but is the best street machine out of both. Instant torque and no wheelspin at the lights, not to mention a soundtrack that turns heads. At the track gti has more potential - less weight more power with tuning.
My brother used to work for a company that fixed a lot of VW's. When this car came out, he told me that the Police would often visit and ask them to be on the lookout for certain cars. After enquiring, my brother told me that, according to recent reports, the R32 was the drug dealers car of choice for escaping the rozzers in urban areas !!
They drive really nice but they are not fast and in my opinion the gti looks and drives nicer , inside and out. The wingbacks make a big difference and the mk4 looks more special than the mk5.
Iv got a mk4 2.8 vr6 4mo with a centre delete and miltek res back box and let me tell you the noise is the best, fuel economy is really bad but smiles per gallon is high, my gear box do be sloppy tho lol

400bhp hot hatches are a joke. There's barely anywhere you can really safely use that kind of power output in the UK.

For the money, I'll keep my A3 3.2 Quattro S-line I knicked for just over 5k CAD! Basically a stealth R32.

I used to have a VR6 Corrado Storm. I now have an R32 MK5 DSG. The Golf is quicker, more civilised, and a better car. But I miss that Corrado.

Thought Hadex system only sent power to rear wheels when it detects slip at the front wheels normal driving is mainly front wheels only

the mk5 didnt carry over the haldex from the mk4, it was a new version of haldex

It's a V6, the cylinders are in a V shape, since the late 20's when Lancia invented this narrow angle V engines.
