I think you made a great choice. The new S&W classics are made in their Performance Center one at a time. The lock work has been simplified over the years and the tolerances tightened so you can shoot jacketed bullets accurately. I prefer the older style grips myself and agree that should change, but that being said the newer models are great shooters. Altamont makes the grips for S&W now, unlike years ago. The trigger will get better after 300 rounds or so. Looking forward to a range trip! Thanks for sharing as always!
Good morning, Viejo. I watched the rest this morning. Great video. My new 686+ has an exceptional double action, but when the hammer is hauled back by the thumb, there's a terrible hitch. I just need to send it to Smith. As for the thumb rest on the grip panels, the older ones allowed for resting the right-hand thumb pad, but the newer models allow for resting the entire thumb so you can tuck it under the second supporting hand. And, the newer ones are ambidextrous. The thinner panels allow for a thinner wrap of the hands. For me, personally, I like the feel of the older wooden grips, but I can really throw lead with the newer. The reason I want an older 41 mag is so there is no malfunction of the key lock causing action lockup upon recoil. If I had a newer big bore revolver, I would simply disable it. Nice revolver, Walter.
That’s a pretty .41! I Hope it’s a shooter. I’m finding lately I share a admiration for these beauty’s. I to prefer the old style grips, I could really see the difference thank you for sharing that.
I own a newer model 57 couldn't stand the stocks either bought a pair of Altamonte Coke bottle grips, made all the difference in the world they've been out of stock for a while keep looking you might find them in stock someday. Mine is a great shooter you should love it
I own one of these newer 57s and I agree with all you have said about the gun. I absolutely hate the red ramp sight and switched to a gold bead front sight, something you can't always do on some N frame models. I like the frame mounted firing pin in these newer revolvers as well as the tightness of the tolerances in these new guns. 57s have always impressed me with tight tolerances throughout their production life but the new 57 & 58 are the best. I prefer the 6 inch most times but do wish S&W still offered the Mountain Gun as the ideal carry gun in 41 special. But I digress, the 41 was designed around the 210 grain projectile and in cast bullets you can't beat that weight as an overall performer. I like H&Gs #256 if you can find it. Prayers on a fast recovery.
Thanks Lawrence. I had replied to your comment much earlier, but it was ‘magically deleted’. It’s been happening a lot lately to many of us. I now have several molds for the 41, but have another month before I can get to the range to shoot. 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
That's a good looking revolver. Nothing as nice as they used to be, but it's pretty good. As much woodworking as you do I bet you can make those grips fit better. It seems like the top side of the left panel might be causing the gap. Now you're going to have to keep your eyes open for a Henry in 41 magnum.
With you and Marc talking 41 Magnum lately, I’m feeling like I should get out the 57 and Redhawk! Maybe even a couple of Contender barrels that I haven’t run yet…
Thanks, Rich. I have never shot a 41 mag, including this one so I can’t attest to the recoil. There is virtually zero 41 factory ammo in my town at the moment, but all the major players do make it. It’s expensive. ‘Cheap’ factory ammo for 41 Mag is around $1/round and some is double that. I’ve got plenty of components and several molds so I’ll be fine.
Heheh "marcas registradas", that reminds me of my old Astra model 44 and Llama Super Comanche i used to have! Man those were great! They should bring those back into "Producción"!
I have a model 57 (no dash) made in 1966 with a 4”. Back then they came from the factory with a wooden box. Quality made with zero cylinder play once hammer is cocked.
There is nothing that can't be made cheaper and sold for more !! As far as that "cut out" on left side i believe is for the ejector on open cylinder and not intended as a thumb relief.
That is correct, Jose. The “football” cutout serves both purposes. The newer, flatter grips that I don’t like do not have the interference issue with dumping spent cases! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
Thanks for stopping by, Ron. Agreed, the quality of the older Smiths was better. In the N-frames I have a 29-2 and 27-2 and both are superior to tje Hilary-holes. 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
Thanks for stopping by, Ziruk. I have enjoyed this one since I acquired it. I’ll have some video in the near future loading for it with some 41 Specials! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
Good old S & W--cinching on their top of the line revolvers---yet they have increased the price astronomically. The grips should be as they used to be with Gancalo-Alves....the logo should be where it used to be and it should have the classic bluing. The company has turned into a cheap-a** class outfit run by bean counters with the CEO more concerned with his compensation package, than the quality of their Products. Where is the wood presentation case they proudly included with them in the past? Just shameful. I will never buy any new one from them ever again.
Agreed across the board, Starman. My 29-2 and 27-2, both purchased new some 40 years ago, came in wood presentation boxes with the GA grips. It all helped make the purchase, expensive for the period in time, more ‘comfortable’. I also have a newer 25-15. Same way. Thanks for stopping by tje bench! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
Hi, Craig, and thanks for stopping by. Yeah, after the presentation stocks that are on my older N-Frames, these just don’t seem right. Since I made this video, I have replaced them with the older style S&W’s. 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
Congrats Viejo. I love my model 57's.
Thanks, Andy! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
A real beauty of a pistol! Congratulations on the addition. Thanks for the close look brother. 🤝
Thanks, Ron. I’m excited to get it out to the range! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
Got my eye on one. Hope to make the deal one day. 41 is a sweet cartridge
Thanks for stopping by, Racer. I hope you manage to get ahold of one yourself! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
what a nice piece!
Thanks, Kyle! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
Beautiful collection Viejo!
Thanks GGW! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
Beautiful Walter. I am really looking at getting one since I have the brass now. Enjoy 👉💨
Thanks, Gene! I think you’d enjoy a 41! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸🦃

Nice video Walter. I have been looking for an older model 57. Highboy

Thanks so much, Marc! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
Very very nice walter, love the 41 mag, great looking collection sir, hope you are feeling a bit better
Thanks, Mac! I know that you enjoy yours. I’m doing Ok over here, all things considered. 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
Sweet ! Hope You'll be able to fit those grips better. 👍😁🌽
Thanks, Walks. I’m confident that it’s an easily fixable thing with the grips. 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
Very nice Walter
Thank you kindly, Don! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
👍🤠🇺🇲 Looks awesome. Great addition to your S&W collection.
Thanks, Six! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
That is a thing of beauty
Thanks so much, Dale. 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
Very nice. I regret selling my .41 magnum Smith in the 90’s. One I wish I still had.
@@tomahawk5118 thanks for stopping by. I have really been enjoying this one. Perhaps you can round up another! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸

Nice family photo
So nice 😃
What a line up at the end! Beautiful! I like the look of the new grips...until you put it right beside the others. All are beauties, for sure.
Thanks, Jamie! I had replied to your comment much earlier, but it was ‘magically deleted’ 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸

👍 Excellent! Nice collection of N frame S&W’s. If they come out with. 57 in stainless (657) I will buy one to go along with my 629,610 and 686+.
Hello, Marc. Thanks for stopping by! Yeah.. a stainless 57 would be nice! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
Very nice. Does the 41 have much less recoil from the 44? Is commercial ammo available. Not up to speed yet to reload.
Excellent! Stay away from the gunshops for a while now, cause ya know, .41's in the form of Blackhawks are gong to start showing up!🙂
Of course. That’s always the way! Thanks, Mike! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸🇨🇦
I just found this channel, and it so happens I also just bought a .41 blackhawk as my first pistol.
Heheh "marcas registradas", that reminds me of my old Astra model 44 and Llama Super Comanche i used to have! Man those were great! They should bring those back into "Producción"!
Hiya, Sniper, and thanks for dropping by the bench. Agreed..that Llama would be supreme to have out again. Come back on by to say ‘hey’ anytime. 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
I have a newer 57, too. While I like the shape of the grip, it's the grip finish that doesn't seem up to par compared to the older ones.
Hi..thanks for stopping by. I have since swapped out the standard grips for a set of the older N-frame style 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
Enjoy your new revolver. I like the older Smiths much better.
Thanks, Ed. Yeah, I like my older ones better, too! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
I have a model 57 (no dash) made in 1966 with a 4”. Back then they came from the factory with a wooden box. Quality made with zero cylinder play once hammer is cocked.
Hi Ron. My 29-2 and 27-2 both came with the presentation wood boxes. Very nice! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
The grips on the 57 are thinner for the use of speed loaders. The 57 was originally for law enforcement and the use of speed loaders.
I believe that all the new N-Frames are outfitted with the slim grips. 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
Sweet Pistola brother.
Thank you, my friend! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
Love that blue on it
Thank you! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
Was this made in Massachusetts , that could explain a lot considering the political atmosphere in that state and why S&W moved out of that state !
Hahaha! Thanks M1! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
I’ll stick with the early S&W’s when quality meant something. Same with Ruger single-actions, I only keep the 3-screws. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for stopping by, Ron. Agreed, the quality of the older Smiths was better. In the N-frames I have a 29-2 and 27-2 and both are superior to tje Hilary-holes. 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
Best caliber my opinion
Thanks for stopping by, Ziruk. I have enjoyed this one since I acquired it. I’ll have some video in the near future loading for it with some 41 Specials! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸

@@scottzipperer6146 hi Scott. Thanks for stopping by! I’d love to an older one. I have a 29-2 and 27-2 and a couple of others. 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
The only N frame cal. your missing is 10mm. I know the 610 is ss, I don't know if they ever made a blue 10mm.
Hiya, Rich. Thanks for stopping by. I don’t think I’d want a 10mm in a revolver. I have a 1911 in 10mm. 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸

@@brucelowell7506 yup. Grips are replaced with old school S&W like those on my older Smiths. Thanks for stopping by! 🤛🏻🔫🥸

another shi##y new s&w. the reason the older guns go for so much.
