Excited Cows Moving to Pasture!! Plus How we do it!

- On the east coast of Canada, many of us do not move cows with horses, mostly because a lot of our fields are smaller and separated by dense forest. Alley ways and paths to the fields is the only way we can comfortably move our cattle since running them into the thick woods isnt an option ! Our farm is small so it works, and while sometimes it can take a little longer moving the young ones who don't yet know the drill, ultimately in the end everyone finds the good stuff (grass)!
today we moved about 1/4 of our herd to the first rotation. Our bull will join these ladies soon for another breeding season. Our finished steers remain int he barn until harvest now (they got the last two summers out on fields and this year they stay in), and our yearlings will be put out onto a different pasture away from the bull (because they are too young, as well as related to him). It takes some shuffling around but it works and as we move through the season it becomes more streamlined. Come October, they will all come back into the barn yard until next spring. Our winters are harsh, and they really love a cozy place to rest indoors!

No wonder the cows like to get out to that luscious grass after a long winter incarceration . The simple things are still the best. Thank you for all your great advice regarding sourdough. I have decided to follow your method of caring for and using sourdough. Which will hopefully now become a family heirloom.

North Eastern BC and the cows have gone to pastures here too . Our girls were on a cattle drive last week and I could watch the videos over and over :). Yah for spring / summer :)
I love watching the cattle drives out west!! Its not something that is common here as we dont have the open land masses and foothills the way you do out there. I would love to participate in one someday though!
