Saw it in person in the late-90's when there was a sci-fi exhibition near where I live. She's an absolute behemoth and ridiculously detailed.
Stan Winston's team really knew what they were about, and it's a shame the industry has moved so much towards creating creatures digitally.

as far as the tech has come and as skilled as the artists are; I look at CGI creatures and my brain just says I'm looking at a video game.
some still images can fool me, but something about the lighting and sterile smoothness of the animation is still far from the mark.

Another great entry. Let me commend you for giving a long section to the Skotaks. Got to meet them at the LA Effects studio when I was covering "Titan Find" aka "Creature." (I was stunned when I went in and both the ten-plus foot "Nostromo" and "Dereliect" ships were lying on the floor in a corner. Now that you've shown so many Blink-and-Miss-Them" moments, I wonder if there isn't a sneaky shot of the Derelict in the background someplace.) The Skotaks never have gotten the credit they deserve so I was glad you gave them proper tribute.

What a well researched and presented account of my favorite science fiction action horror film. I sat in the theater at age fourteen vibrating with ecstatic energy. I had read and see every piece of media I could get my hand on. The experience was only improved upon when the directors cut was released. I’ve seen it a hundred and sixty seven times, and it keeps getting better every single time I see it!

The Queen planting eggs on the Sulaco has NEVER been an issue for me. When we meet the Queen she's connected to her ovipositor laying eggs. That process gets interrupted and she has to chase after Ripley.
Why is it so hard for people to believe that given the egg laying process was interrupted the Queen still had a few eggs still inside her and as a contingency plan in case she didn't survive, while Ripley was suiting up in the power loader the queen placed the remaining eggs on the Sulaco?
I don't even have to suspend disbelief to think this. It seems logical.
EDIT: And if Bishop already had the eggs the company wanted why would he even bother going back to rescue Ripley and Newt?

Alien and Aliens are both superior movies in their own right. I love Alien more for the horror and Aliens more for the action. They're both frightening, of course, but in completely different ways. I love both films and make it a point to watch both at least once a year.
As for Suzanne, I had ZERO clue about this until today. What a frigin crying shame that is...the petty things people will do for pride or to gain fame that's undeserved. At least she got her comeuppance (sort of) in the end. But not really, since most people (like myself) have no idea and think she deserves the award...makes you wonder how many stories exist like this in Hollywood today that we have no clue about. Cutthroat business.

No, Bishop says the Blast Radius is 30km, while in the dropship he says the area will be a cloud of vapor the size of Nebraska, two very different notations of size regarding the blast. Remember the blast radius is the size of the actual crater, not how much is vaporized..

I think this is a great action film, well thought out and with great characters. I think every detail is well thought out, and basically there is passion behind it (i.e. it was not just made for money). My only problem with the film is the hive-society and the queen. I like the queen in the movie. I like the end fight and everything. But I don't like the idea of this creature, which was actually "alien" in the last movie, being part of an ant farm, something we can see on our own world, anymore than I like the idea that it was created by a crazy robot. I feel the same way about Cameron's other sequel, Terminator 2. The first story was a perfectly constructed closed loop until you introduce the events of the sequel. I don't hate these films, but I block them out when I watch the original movies.

Lol how do people miss Hudson shooting the window? Also the film states that the pulse rifle fires 10mm AP rounds, which would annihilate it!
It's upsetting to know that Suzanne got credit for essentially hindering the production, she was a real life Burke. Just some corporate husk offering nothing artistic or creative, and yet got the spotlight just because of her position. But back to Aliens, the movie had such a huge influence on me and I remember replicating the colonial marines by drawing them on paper and cutting them out to use like action figures as none of the army toys I had were anywhere close to the colonial marine aesthetic. As I got older I didn't find the movie to be scary, but it's still an excellent film and I hold it and Alien in high regards to this day!

This is my favorite action movie of all time. It's what i consider it to be way more than sci-fi... I was 10 years old when it opened in Italy. My father went to see it with friends... He came home RAVING about it , like on fire. I would often absorb the movies of that era like that, same thing happened with The terminator , i was scared stiff of the incredible Hulk show so imagine how sensitive i was 😂. When they broadcasted it on tv for the first time the deal was huge, it was like it would open on theaters again, magazines about it, posters everywhere ... I mustered the courage to see it being i believe at least 12 at the time... I taped it also, i still have that vhs tape with the tv advertisements and all , i really have to get all that digitalized some day ... Somehow even in the tv set of the time, even with what must have been 45 minutes at very least of ads all throughout the movie it managed to kick my ass and blow my mind and nothing would ever impress me more cinematically speaking ... Of course i would then grow up, develop a taste and criticism like we all do and i'm not of course saying that this movie is better than Apocalypse Now to name a milestone of filmmaking ... but at that age when in no way is one thinking about that actor being not so good, that plot hole or that unconvincing visual effect , when you pretty much absorb it like it somehow really happened to someone somewhere... nothing shocked me more than Aliens, im branded with this movie and it's atmosphere in my brain forever ❤

I disagree with your nitpick of how Burke was able to get the facehuggers into the room with Ripley and Newt.
First, the specimen jars were likely designed to be filled and drained in the other room, possibly from where they sat. This is a perfectly plausible explanation and really isn't the sort of thing that requires some deep analysis.
Second, the lids are held in place with screws. It would be easy to loosen them to the point that the lid could come free with minimal effort from the facehuggers inside.
Third, we are introduced to the scene with Ripley waking up, and we see one of the jars empty on the ground, still moving. The facehugger must have just escaped its captivity, and any noise it made in doing so was likely the reason Ripley woke up in the first place. The fact that the noise and escape happen offscreen really shouldn't bother anyone.
So, I've always felt the scenario played out in the following manner. Burke drains the specimen jars, takes them both into the room - possibly laying them on their sides, loosens the lids, and retreats. The facehuggers push their way out of the specimen jars, one of them making enough noise to wake Ripley up, which is where we enter the scene. Given that Ripley and Newt were under the bed, the facehuggers likely didn't know there were targets they could immediately go after and hid, hoping to ambush an unsuspecting victim.

One thing I would note about the dropship's escape from the atmosphere processor explosion is the extreme force involved. Assuming the dropship gets to the edge of the "30km" blast radius, it takes them 24 seconds to travel 30,000m from a standstill. That would be an average speed of 1250 m/s. But since they are starting at a standstill, the final speed they have to be travelling is 2500 m/s. So, they have to accelerate from 0 to 2500 m/s in 24 seconds. To do that, they would undergo an acceleration force of 127.5 Gs, which would be certainly fatal. But, the Aliens universe does have intertial dampers and artificial gravity, so maybe they use that technology to prevent their liquification.

  • @JasonAdank
    @JasonAdank 6 місяців тому +1

Regarding the derelct and the nuclear blast radius.... Your discussion about the family travelling for a week doesnt necessarily mean its a literal d=rt situation with regards to it being way far away from the blast radius... Recall that the family was 'looking' for something which could imply that they were driving around in kinds of crazy patterns in search of the derelict. the 'week' of driving around doesnt mean it was in a straight line away from Hadleys Hope.

    • @dungeonsanddobbers2683

They were sent out to check a specific grid reference. I'm not sure what, if anything, they were told to look for, but yeah a survey team is going to go out to the area and drive around at a crawl, stopping every few miles to take readings, measurements, etc.
So, it's fully believable that they could have both been out there for a week and that the derelict was close enough to be effected by the reactor detonating.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the pulse rifle magazines as a logical gap.
They hold 99 rounds of 10mm armor piercing ammunition, correct? That's just shy of a meter length in a single stack. Even double-stacked, a magazine would still require a half meter of space to fit that many rounds. 10mm is the diameter of the rifle's muzzle, so the slugs would be even larger in a pre-fired state. Take into consideration the brass casings they're loaded into and the diameter grows even more.
Also, the average 10mm cartridge is estimated about 17.81g. A 99 round magazine of this loading would weigh 1.71kg before you take the magazine itself into consideration.
In short, you would probably be looking at a magazine that is two feet long and weighs four pounds. That's an incredibly stupid design for a weapon.

    • @XenoSpyro
      @XenoSpyro 3 місяці тому

It's 95 rounds in the movie as seen when Ripley loads one. It's 99 rounds in the AVP trilogy.
"Take into consideration the brass casings they're loaded into"
It may not end up mattering and something like 5.7 would make more sense. Gorman explicitly says "10mm explosive tipped caseless."

How the situation at the end of Aliens is almost entirely Vasquez's fault: A micro thesis.
Disclaimer. This isn't to discount her as a character or anything, she's still one of the best in all of cinema history. All the best characters are flawed and this is a biggie.
So the crux of the issue is her willful refusal to follow orders. Her gung ho attitude is established at many points.
During the rescue mission when Ripley notices the location under the reactor and shares that and its implications with Gorman who reluctantly agrees and gives the order to hold fire and collect the ammunition. Hardly an ideal scenario but everyone complies except for Vasquez (and by extension Drake but he's following her lead) who holds back whatever that bit is supposed to be, a safety interlink of some kind I guess.
When her classic "LET'S ROCK!" moment comes it's already happened, it all sprials from there. Gorman may take a few seconds to react before issuing new orders, to regroup and fall back to the APC under cover of flamers because he rightly recognised the situation has changed, not necessarily to their advantage. I don't think anyone could've come up with anything better at the time. All well and good except Apone can't hear the orders because of the shooting. While he is struggling to hear and not paying attention he gets taken. It's not until then that Gorman breaks and we get one of Ripley's best bits when she shouts "DO SOMETHING!" but he's all out ideas so Ripley takes the APC leading to the next couple bites of this shit sandwich. In Gorman's credit he lets her once Burke tells him he's had his chance. During this sequence we not only break the APC but also lose the dropship because of the emergency evac situation causing the alien slime noticed by Spunkmeyer (what a name) not to be investigated and we all know happens next.
We're not done yet though, we still have one more stinky bite. The reactor meltdown isn't mentioned or noticed before this so it's fair to assume this was triggered either as a consequence from the shooting Ripley warned about or from driving the APC though god only knows how many walls, pipes and whatever else. Which wouldn't be so bad if they could evac via the dropship but they lost it already so they have to do that whole bit getting the spare and holding out, in the process losing pretty much everyone else including herself. You call it Gorman's redemption but I'd argue it's just as much if not more hers.
Now you could argue the meltdown was actually caused by alien goop gunking up the works and the slime could easily not have been noticed and they lose the dropship anyway another time so all that would've happend regardless. In that case all she did was get half her squad, including her best friend killed. Good job.
I rest my case. Questions? Comments?

To me, Aliens is the most timeless movie in the entire Alien saga. Its not dependent on suspense alone like the original Alien.
Alien is basically a far more beautiful and snazzy slasher film. We know when monster is coming. We know what the monster looks like.
If you want to talk about silly in the original Alien, lets talk about how many times the ship and cargo explode. Thats just improbable. And you have the audacity to trash this nuclear blast but give Alien a pass for those rock em sock em explosions??
Dont lay the derelict plot hole on Aliens. The future filmmakers of rat turds like Alien 3 and Resurrection completely ignored the information given to us in the Special Edition of Aliens.
Unlike the characters in Alien, i consistently and repeatedly care about the characters of Aliens as i did the first hundred times i saw the movie. I could care less about Kane, Dallas, and Lambert. They just dont have the staying power that Newts, Hicks, Hudson and even Vasquez have. They dont even have great character arcs.
When Vasquez has more of a character arc than Dallas, thats not good. If the characters in Alien had any depth at all, we wouldve seen a scene of him apologizing to Ripley for not listening to her.
Now in terms of Aliens, the fact that no one can see how many times the No. 57 shows up on the walls throughout the film is a testament to Cameron as a writer and director. The name Amy is also written perfectly imperfect on the wall of Newts den.
The talent, courage and confidence to hide those details in plain sight while using then to bring Ripley to life is far more amazing than anything Ridley Scott achieved in the original Alien. It takes great foresight to create that kind of visual storytelling so perfectly. Its like a great author only through the art of cinema. He personally thinks of it as quilting, which isnt far off either.
Cameron succeeded in creating a full-fledged human being in Ripley on paper and on screen. But Cameron also succeeds gloriously in thrilling us, exciting us and scaring us with everything else.
But now more critics than ever want to dissect and destroy everything Cameron has ever made. These movies still hold up for everyone else. Were not all cynical eggheads that want to overthink and overanalyze everything in his movies. Youre not even trying analyze the film for its artistic merits.
What Cameron has done with everyone of his films is push the bar. And im not just talking about Cameron's use of special effects. He has made the greatest 3D movies ever made, long before Avatar. Camerons movies have consistently and repeatedly engrossed audiences the same way in every movie since The Terminator.
That is due to his devotion to character and story. Theres so much to absorb in every shot of a Cameron film. Audiences arent getting this level of talent and commitment from any other filmmaker. Thats why Cameron's films are constantly making money and Ridley Scott is now failing far more than succeeding.

80s and 90s cameron made the best live action movies. It boggles my mind that studio heads and producer didn’t start handing him blank checks, final cut, and full creative control following aliens. Or after terminator 2, he had 3 huge hits: t1, aliens, and t2 - the latter being a landmark in special effects

bro you dont understand how nukes work... the blast radius being 20 miles means the fire ball of the explosion or the "core" of the detonation IS 20 miles... you this does not include the area around the explosion were thermal damage is done or the area around that there concussion damage is done... an example is the zar bomb the biggest bomb made by man which is 50 mega tons... that the equivalent of 50 million tons of dynamite... it only has an explosive center OR core detonation of 6 miles, meaning the explosion itself only goes 6 miles in radius, but that 6 mile explosion does 50 miles of damage around it, so lets do some math... if the explosion of this fusion reactor is 20 miles that means it is 3.33 times bigger than the 6 mile explosion of the zar bomb roughly 6 * 3.33 is 20so if the explosion is 3.33 time bigger the damage radius will be 3.33 times bigger which means it will be 166.5 miles in all directions bishop was talking about a radius and in nuke explosions are self re-enforcing meaning 20 miles in all directions 166.5 miles in all directions is actually a width of 333 miles when they talk about a radius in nukes they mean miles out from point of blast not width overall so a radius of 166.6 miles is 333 miles wide... and finally the blast with that big of impact damage would in fact kick up debris that would travel through the air for hundreds of miles in the form of mostly gas since a nuke explosion gets so hot about 10k-100m degrees depending on the size that most matter would be vaporized so yes a "cloud of vapor the size of Nebraska" for a 20 mile radius blast is in fact not a change of distance but rather he was talking about the debris to explosion ratio... and that ratio is totally plausible... if you are going to argue the accuracies of a movie then be accurate yourself... i get you are trying to be fair on both sides but you cant speculate someone is wrong about something with out doing the research about the accuracy in the first place... also i know about nukes because i had training in the military, James Cameron however is obsessed with accuracy and actually researched the sizes of nuke explosions and debris, he was not exactly accurate but he was very close...

This is a funny argument here:
You speak a-matter-of-factly to denounce a point of view and lecture someone about research in a science-FICTION movie but you have the gall to assume your opinion is the end-all.
The bottom line is that you are arguing FACTS on an earth-like planet with grass, trees, combustibles and a certain oxygen composition to spread fire. LV-426 is ROCK, LAVA BASED and has no vegetation and you or I don’t know it’s oxygen composition (which would be less than earth as they are terraforming) which would affect said fire. So, in the end you are not spouting FACT about the situation on this planet.
Argue it all you want, you are reaching. As for the video maker’s theory it is possible, he is right or wrong and I’m not going to judge his research on it because I don’t know what details he took into full account to come to his conclusion. However, I will say you can see in the movie itself that the blast doesn’t cover a large proportion of the planet. Sure, it would spread fallout everywhere but you don’t see the atmosphere igniting.

I had to edit this reply because I actually watched the video again to understand what in the world this comment referred to as we covered Newt's experience in the ducts in part 1. The only line in the video that this could possibly refer to is when Newt led them into the ducks which were infested by invading aliens or when I talk about Newt letting go of her coat. The aliens are actively scouring the facility for living beings. This is not like when the place was a tomb, and a scout would look around for something out of boredom. There is an active hunt for anything alive. And yes, where she ends up she is ACTUALLY caught by an ALIEN. What's even funnier is that in less than a 1/2 from the moment of entering said shafts a nuclear bomb would go off. So yeah, I would say physician heal thyself, because there is no way she would survive regardless of semantics.
To try to minimize 1 1/2 of detailed analysis and then say pay better attention to such an ambiguous interpretation is so disingenuous.

There are so many plotholes...storytelling & world building were just stepping stones to the next one liner or set piece it's an insult to the original
Cameron did the same thing writing the screenplay for the sequel to First Blood taking a carefully written character & turning him into a shallow trope.....
he can't write I really can't see why he is so highly thought of he gets some very nice shots, & set pieces but as a story teller or actual film maker he's a hack
Are you going to cover Alien 3? the extended cut is an underappreciated gem & often maligned I think partly due to Fincher's disowning of it....but he crafted the raw materials for a fine film, his falling outs with production management I believe embittered & blinded him to the work he actually produced

The derelict was in the Illyium Mountain Range around 220 miles away. So the nuclear blast was nowhere near it. However it was a very unstable volcanic area the derelict was damaged when The Jordan family found it. But after time the derelict was swallowed under volcanic eruptions and lava and ash and was destroyed.

@@RepresentThis Taking the volcanic activity at face value, it still doesn't entirely eliminate the possibility that the eggs survived. Many people think that Kane descended into a hold or cargo area of the derelict, when that can't possibly be the case given the size of the cave and the fact that it seems to go on forever. Instead, it was (probably) a hollowed-out cavern using similar techniques used in the construction of the derelict itself.
So, even if the derelict was destroyed (which in itself seems unlikely given its hardiness), the egg chamber could've been unaffected.
I don't know the canon of the whole situation. Incidentally, the nuclear blast destruction was unintentionally lampooned in Aliens: Colonial Marines when it was revealed that Hadley's Hope wasn't completely vaporized, but remained surprisingly intact. Also in ACM, the derelict survived the explosion since it's prominently featured in the game.
(Of course, no one takes ACM seriously.)
