If the music artists benefit from the tik tok creators, they could shine a light on those creators to draw the audience there. That could put pressure on the apps to give credit where it is due.
This has been going on since before Fred Astaire and Bob Hope (both of whom watched black performers to learn steps or jokes). A century later we've got to do better.

If you must boycott again, please strategize to minimize the pain the creators will feel. And let more of the Community know so we can back you up! Thank you for producing this. I am in the demographics (multiple) that Roy noted who needed the background. My niece tried to teach me a few of these dances during quarantine and I knew the white girl names they mentioned. I was able to have a great teaching conversation with her about this issue - a real, she can understand example of systemic racism and white privilege. She was super open and engaged in the conversation. It makes me feel like there can be progress if white people try.
We should focus more on teaching ourselves to speak the language of computers and create our own platforms. We can then own our talent I really do not like how we have to fight for independence all the time.
And something as ethereal as a social media app at that. Something that could quite possibly disappear tomorrow. Remember Vine, Periscope, and Meerkat? Content should have staying power and longevity. I can't see a dance having any of that. And let's face it, most "influencers", a term I've always disliked since it was co-opted by social media, are just pitchmen. They might as well be the Shamwow guy or Ron Popeil.
I hope this happens. I don't mean to be that guy, but as someone who works an actual physical labor job, I don't much have the stomach for hearing people whine about not getting their due ad revenue. I also am not on tiktok and don't care about influencers so this material is not for me. Though I'm cynical enough that hearing about the backbreaking labor of how they get up in early hours to edit videos and how life is unfair isn't moving me. Such a platform would require some organic movement and organization to do so, which means people who have the work ethic or resources to get it done. Or the profit motive, but then the sincerity of it all becomes dubious. Though that's pretty much the game, is it not?
I agree. As a solution, we should create our own algorithms, design our own apps, direct and produce for our own people, and copywrite it all so it doesn't get appropriated.

As someone in tech, I want to point out, this isn't just mysterious algorithms. The algorithms learn from and magnify what's going on with the audience: reports filed, seconds watched, comments and other interactions. We can't just blame an algorithm, it's also straight up racist audiences.

They steal dances and other content, present it as if it was their own, and because they have a million followers, they get away with it. And if a Black Creator says anything about it, the followers of the white content thief start attacking. It is really sad to see. What Tik Tok needs to do is make it IMPOSSIBLE to upload the stolen content without properly tagging the original.
