    The 37 mm Gun M3 was the first dedicated anti-tank gun fielded by United States forces in numbers. Introduced in 1940, it became the standard anti-tank gun of the U.S. infantry with its size enabling it to be pulled by a jeep. However, the continuing improvement of German tanks quickly rendered the 37 mm ineffective, and by 1943 it was being gradually replaced in the European and Mediterranean theaters by the more powerful British-developed 57 mm Gun M1. In the Pacific, where the Japanese tank threat was less significant, the M3 remained in service until the end of the war.
    Like many other light anti-tank guns, the M3 was widely used in the infantry support role and as an anti-personnel weapon, firing high-explosive and canister rounds.
    The M5 and M6 tank mounted variants were used in several models of armored vehicles most notably in the Stuart Light Tank M3/M5, the Lee Medium Tank M3, and Greyhound Light Armored Car M8. In addition, the M3 in its original version was mated to a number of other self-propelled carriages.

    This gun was very famous for its anti tank capabilitys,so much so that it was mounted on most early ww2 tanks,tho it was concidered irrelevant during late ww2 but still was exelent for dissabling half-tracks and armored cars.

    Does any military use 37 mm shells for anything anymore? I get they wouldn't work as anti-tank weapons without HEAT warheads (the German WWII experience with their inadequate 37 mm AP shells show this... they were basically solid shot with a tiny non-shaped explosive). But like the autocannons used for anti-aircraft in the Vietnam War era were usually 20 mm (when they used AA shells at all instead of using missiles). And the AC-130 I believe ahs a 20 mm gun. Why not a 37 mm gun?

    • @blackegret666
      @blackegret666 4 роки тому +7

      They do in APCs and Bofor guns, 37mm is better for a automatic (full-automatic or BRRRT) than 57 and 75mm mostly because of firepower, cost and overall size and weight of the round

    Very very cool, I've got the same shell & several 37mm projos. I always try to find my 40mm & 3" projos. I've got a 1937 USSR 45x310R mm M32 anti tank gun that still needs to be reactivated. Do to a freinds M18 hellcat 3" gun blowing up nobody around here will touch it. I even rebuilt my ammomaster 50cal press to load the 45mm, made a big ass shell holder, neck size & seat die. Deprime is with a hand held rod w/decap pin on end😊😊

    My grandfather was part of a team of 9 using these one day against the Nazis bastard's. He was at the front while they passed the shells up man to man,just as he was relieved and put towards the back of the row instead of firing the thing, a grenade or mortor came in can't remember which but killed the first 6 outright, the medics didn't think he was going to make it,in fact they told him "you've done your bit go to sleep" he survived and won 4 medals although the shrapnel was in him untill he passed. It horrifies me now though hearing one of these go of.it must have been horrific for any troops around these things! Let's all hope there's never a world war 3

      @Mr. Moon and @Charles Jones have you heard of Pandora's box or know the story? If so then you know what hope is good for. If not here is a run down. So when Pandora was getting ready for her voyage to Earth jer Father gave her a box and said " don't open this box for evil beings are in here." She set sail as the voyage was long she had started to get curious but thinking of all the bad things inside made it a little easier to resist. Some time later she got the urge to open it and it grew and grew as the time past. Soon it was too much she had open the box disobeying her father's orders and as all evil creatures poured out into the world people had only feared them. She decided to open the box fully because of there thought to be nothing. What came out was a small light she picked it up and called it hope and send it out to the open as people had got some Hope they had fought back pushing the darkness further. Hope is to define the actions of the man, woman, or child as your guardian has done for you. Hope is a form of good that just the smallest amount in the darkest of times can spark the light needed to run the darkness off. Have you two ever hoped for something? Whether it be for family, friends, god or whatever you're beliefs are for a better day soon it will come. After WW2 came the Cold War and so did the threat of nuclear war so think about all the hope that those people had to avoid it then with that hope and that miss read in that speech the Berlin Wall fell families were once reunited, young kids had joined their parents form being separated. So respect those who had fallen for your freedom, respect those who had gave up their life for yours. And most of all never doubt the will of hope. For soon you will fall, you will gain it and use it for your action. Those who crave power have been plagued by satisfaction of others suffering the consequences and they say " they didn't use it correctly." So to the owner of this comment section I thank your grandfather's sacrifice. My dad was in the Persian Coast aboard an aircraft carrier in the US Navy. He ended up splitting his knee open and yet he is still up and kickin'. If it wasn't for the sacrifice that you're grandfather did we would not be here. Or we would probably speaking a different language. Everyone who served in WW2 had played a part. And if one was taken out it could change the story. So remember that. All of y'all have a great life and stay safe from this virus in 2020 sun, April 4.

      Your crew would set it up to face a likely path for tanks to take, perhaps as part of a battery of such guns in some sort of concealed position. When the tanks approach, the crew manning the gun pick a particular target tank and operate the gun's traverse and elevation gear to bear on it, adjusting for its range and any lead required. Then shoot, reload and readjust, shoot, reload and readjust; switch to your next target once your first is dead... you get the idea. Of course they'd have trained over and over for this operation. And guns like this were effective-lots of tanks in World War II were taken out by them.
