90% of my flies is tied on a size 4, 6 or 8 Ahrex lightstinger. The last 10% is also tied on a Ahrex hook, a Curved gammarus hook in a size 8 or 10. Good work from all of you guys! 99% of the time I do C&R. So it warms my heart to hear, that the fish is still travling along the coast/contries and re-produce in the streams ❤️
I typical fish with #6/8/10 trippel hooks on my lures. I agree that the hooks mounted from factory is too big for Sea Trouts as I see it. Some times I use 1/0 single hook, used the 3/0 but it broke when I tryied to un hook a fish, so I stopped to use those. Bombarda and fly fishing, yes I doing all diciplines, I use small #12 three hooks and #4/6/8/10 flyhooks. Trippel hooks and landing net is not a good combination. Too big trippel hook will, if it is a small Sea Trout, in bad cases actually poke through one of the eyes from inside and out. Not pleasent at all. Thats why I try to fish with smaller hooks. For your information, we are also able to catch big Sea Trouts in Danmark :)
Firstly Sam keep up the great work! A great video and very much needed research. Here in Ireland we seem to lack scientists who also have such a passion for angling. I would be interested to see the same carried out on sea trout caught in the fresh water systems where they maybe more vulnerable. On our river all of a sudden since 2016 we have seen a dramatic increase in fungus infection killing trout even before spawning. They seem to be more susceptible all of a sudden. We have been battling from answers but no one can pin point a cause. Arguments have been made that trout have been handled and released for many years and why now are we seeing this fungus killing so many trout. Environmental factors could be having impacts yes but no research is being carried out which is frustrating. Keep up the great work.
Thank you! Very good video! I tie on mostly Ahrex hooks depending on the model #2 - #10 usually a hook gape about 1cm. Most of the time i squeeze in the barb prior to tying. However a tip for those who feel like they want to fish with a barb, but they don't want to damage the fish as badly as a sharp pointy barb sometimes can, like if the hook is going around a Gill-arch. What one can do is to squeeze in the pointy tip of the barb. That way there's a small smooth lump instead of a sharp barb. It's a good way to start moving towards using barbless hooks I think.
Hi… just wanted to share my thoughts on hook gape/ size … years of salmon and sea trout fishing have learned me that big hook gapes (all being relative …. # 6 - 4 and with some hook brands even # 8) quite often damage fish more than had I used a # 10 - 12 - 14 … With such small hooks I aim to connect with the skin in the mouth of the fish … rather than trying to penetrate the jaw - pallet or other parts of the mouth of the fish. The skin in the mouth of salmon and trout are pretty tough and with a strong modern hook (like hooks made for barbel or carp) one stand a very good chance of landing the fish with little injury to its head … Using small hooks for salmon and sea trout is not a new thing but tying on tiny hooks is a mental barrier anglers must pass before getting to terms with a different way seeing the fish we come to catch… my favourite hook Owner ST # 14 … such a great hook
I normaly use hook size 1/0 or 2/0 singelhook, depending on the manufacturer. I agree that a treble hook do a lot more damage and sometimes stamp the mouth shut. U will get a much cleaner hooking with singelhook, i feel better when it only take max 10 sek to unhook instead of up to 60 sek when using treblehook. Love the video, keep up the good work.
Hello! Great work! I have used single hooks for över 12 years. First I started out with small, soft hooks for bait (or for långrev), as I couldn't find proper single hooks. Nowadays I use Owner S-61 in sizes 5/0 and 3/0. I have removed the barb since a couple of years back to make release easier. If I see the fish is small or brown, I just slack the line and let the fish get off the hook by itself. It's more of a challenge to keep a fish I want to land on the hook as you need a really tight line. I also use a rubberized net (same that you use, btw), but some recent trouble with hook, line and fish tangled up in the net has made me want to buy a Brodin ghost net replacement. Skitfiske!
Thanks Thomas, The ghost net would definitely help with possible tangling issues. The net tangling problem is also worse with treble hooks, but you have moved beyond that issue :) .

Thanks Torbjörn, In this case the oversized net was needed so that the fish could move freely for the reflex testing, and not escape until the tests were done. Most sea trout fishing this one is definitely too big to be practical, but having a net that is too small would not be ideal either. If too small even a rubber net could cause fraying of the fins, or if the gill flap is pushed up against the edge of the net it could make it more difficult for water to pass over the gills.

Avkrokningsverktygen kan fungera bra om du övas med dem, men de är inte alltid en förbättring jämfört med pincett eller bara händer. Det hade varit trevligt att kunna testa fler krokstorlekar i detta fiske. En trekrok i storlek 12 borde vara bättre än storlek 2 eller 4 som kommer med många havsöringsdrag. Men för fisken skulle en storlek 12 singel förmodligen vara bättre än en storlek 12 treble.

I wonder if those water temperature effects on oxygen are particularly harmful in stillwater sites compared to fishing in the waves (with potentially higher oxygen). Do you have any personal opinion about that? Great job!!
Thanks Fernando, and interesting question. Oxygenation should generally be better in areas with high wave action, but there are also other metabolic impacts related to temperature. However, there might also be challenges to landing and unhooking a fish quickly in bigger waves, and moving to calmer water for this could take the fish back into a lower oxygen zone. Every situation has different factors that need to be balanced to make for the best possible outcome.

For the short and sweet set of advice I recommend looking here: www.keepfishwet.org/principles There are a lot of situations where we have to release fish for reasons other than voluntary C&R, such as them being outside the size limit, or the wrong species. So we have to be able to do C&R or selective harvest as well as possible if we as a society are going to continue fishing. If C&R is done as well as possible I would imagine that the individual fish prefers to be released rather than killed, but where possible and legal to do so it makes sense to kill and consume fish that are unlikely to survive.
