No you’re missing the bigger picture. Sardar Patel was the Iron Man of India and he was as resilient as Deng Xiaoping or Bismarck. IF Sardar Patel had become the first PM then Nehru would have probably become the second. The problem with Nehru ISN’T his policies which were largely fine enough (The Non-Aligned movement and the establishment of the tech institutes) but what he left as a legacy. Even today the Congress party CANNOT move past the heirs of Pandit Nehru DESPITE having some excellent reformers and ministers. PV Rao is largely responsible for India’s growth from 1991 to 2017 due to his liberalization and he worked with Ex-PM Manmohan Singh. Someone from Congress and who ISN’T from the “Royal Family” of Nehru is the BEST reformer and leader along with Atal Vajpayee who was probably the BEST PM in my lifetime.

Although Patel died in 1950, his health had deteriorated badly almost a year prior. There is no possibility that Patel would have been able to serve any useful or relevant term as PM. On the other hand, as a deputy PM of pre-independence India, he played a vital role in unifying the country as we know today. If he were made PM in 1946, it's unlikely he would have also been given the job of unifying the country. Someone else would have done that work and they most probably wouldn't have done as good a job as him. Nehru as PM gave a solid decade and a half of good leadership during which many institutes which form the foundations of modern India were built and his contribution towards the freedom movement as well as keeping a young country united is immense and should not be undervalued. Most people who make this a Patel vs Nehru fight don't even know how close they were as friends or even the H of History. Some of them belong to a faction which supports a right wing group who had zero contribution to the freedom struggle and were in fact partly responsible for the country's partition.
