You should consider Albania (Tirana), very little taxes, cheap living & great food, flexible visa rules, gorgeous weather, nice people, and against all belief, it is safe. Not to mention you're going to be 1hour flights away from Athens, Rome, Croatia, Vienna, Budapest etc etc. It's a hidden gem.
At least you get something grom those taxes - like functioning police, infrastructure, transport, education and healthcare. We get nothing from those 5%, not even pension. That's the trade-off)

But when I get the breakdown of my monthly pay by the employer, it's 10% for the income, several percent for health insurance, several percent for additional retirement savings (which are mandatory, cannot be skipped) and when I draw the line, I get about 70% of what my gross salary is. So in reality, you pay 50% in Belgium, I pay 30% in Eastern Europe, but you have the "functioning police, infrastructure, transport, education and healthcare" Oleh was talking about. Who is getting the better deal?
Actually it's 5%. And you can afford everything you need. Visit to the doctor in private clinic is 18$. And there is no waiting line. Dentist are cheap too. But for serious stuff better to have insurance.
I’m also a software developer I live in Kiev. I can confirm in Kiev a lot of things are cheaper and better. Especially the unlimited internet is very cheap and very modern with highest speed 1 gbit per second costs about 20 usd. And the food is the most amazing 🤩

Yes because as a citizen you’re entitled to a free health care and free education, including higher education and the unemployment benefits are pretty good. That means even the taxes might be higher, growing up in finland and starting a family is a lot cheaper than elsewhere. But expats or freelancers arent’t necessarily entitled to these benefits that the high taxes bring. Secondly, the taxes are progressive so it really depends who you ask if the taxes are high or not. For low and medium income person the tax rates are way lower than in many other european countries like for example in germany. For example if you earn less than ~15k a year your tax rate is 0%. An average person who would earn like 30-50k a year pays about 20-35% tax. So unless you’re a high income person, it’s really a miconception that the taxes are high in finland.
I used to live in Bangkok. If I would do it again, I would live in Chang Mai. Just be careful and don’t fall in love. So my wife is from Thailand. Currently they have protest and so I am not sure how that would effect quality of life. But definitely true about “visa runs”. Ukraine is amazing, my mom was born there, I want to go there again.

Why don't you consider Istanbul guys? For around 20k usd you can buy an appartement there and have a 5 years legal residency, after that you can apply for citizenship. Verry cheap for living and renting too
There’s this European guy living in Cucuta Colombia with $450 dollas budget. He must only eat 1 tortilla a day. But I think Mazatlán beats those places if you look around in downtown Mazatlán you can rent a so so apartment for $250US. No snow or pollution there nor are the cartels killing everybody. Besides Americans can stay illegally in Mexico without being harassed or deported.
Actually Lviv is one of the most tourist oriented cities in Ukraine, many many people speak not only english but many different languages you wouldn't even expect to find + there's many foreigners there. I've been living 2 years in Ukraine, i know what I'm talking about

But if you're just wanting to put your head down and work for an honest paycheck while minimizing financial pressures and ultimately maximizing discretionary income to enjoy your free time, it just seems there are much cheaper options (although your locations are still probably nicer than 85-90% of the planet LOL).

yes to an extent, it's slightly complicated. there are exemptions in credits if you're living outside the US for most of the year. (FEIE, foreign tax credit).
