    I wish they changed the design for two reasons:
    First, is you would actually differ between both old and the new drop cam.
    Second, so they would add a ball joint to make it have even better motion.

    Just picked up the pro and so far I love it. something that I had a issue with that was not mentioned is, if you point the camera facing out a window for security and auto night vision is on it will reflect and block 99.9% of what your trying to see. work around: have it turned off with outside lights on when pointing out a windows at night

      It uses a USB port for power but it connects to your home network using wifi, so no battery.

    Is recording to the DropCam cloud server the only option? It would be perfect if it allowed users to record to their own personal SFTP.

    Wow... $200!? It'd cost over $1,000 to get my whole home set up with security cameras if I used dropcams.
    There are better options out there for around that same price that can be placed outdoors as well.

    Can you handle the storing of video yourself rather than using there service? To reduce costs?

    • @LEXXONE74
      @LEXXONE74 11 років тому +1

      It's not hard or time/storage consuming like people make it out to be, i have security Cam system I put up myself with a small DVR and WiFi to the phone, weather proof, night vision, view on TV or computer or both like I do, simple and only $79 more than this camera believe it or not. Thanks, Amazon.com

    • @LEXXONE74
      @LEXXONE74 11 років тому +1

      Oh you meant with this Cam specifically? Sorry. I don't think you can, check "Razors" I think he mentions something about having to use their service to store video.

    • @Razor2048

      For me, I purchased a security camera kit. it came with 4 480p cameras (of which, I replaced one of them with a 720p camera (though the dvr will only record at around 960x resolution. though things are still clear.
      with that and the 3 other cameras recording at 480p, I get a little over a month of recording on a 500GB hard drive (I woud get more, but during the night, I set the cameras to record non stop since the motion detection does not work as reliably. I then have the live stream go to my PC where a more robust security camera software can provide more detailed alerts (eg differentiating between objects and people) Then if someone comes in the area, I can download the raw footage directly from the DVR and piece together the multiple camera angles.
      For my system, I spent almost 3 times the cost of the dropcam, but that system has been used for years with no monthly fee. I can access the cameras and recordings remotely via server built into the DVR (no cloud crap needed) I have 4 decent cameras, and as an additional supplement, I have the security camera software also viewing a 1080p webcam at a window which provides high detailed footage of the yard. (only needed about 40 feet of USB cable (where I just used a few 15 foot extension cables connected to USB hubs (like $2 on ebay) this helps overcome the length limitation of the USB. (this largely only applies to people who live in the city as ample light from the street lights, allow the camera to work well at night.
      Other than that, any important recordings, I transfer to my NAS, the rest is auto deleted as needed to make space on the DVR
      Keep in mind that for the police to more effectively use your footage, you must have enough detail to identify the persons face. (a grainy blurry clip will only get you as far as those cases where someone robs a store, the media ask for help locating the person and the video, and the person is almost never found due to lack of detail)
      If I were to attempt this for a single camera, I would spend $200 on the camera, and $300 a year for the dropcam service and it would largely be non optional because they made sure that you could not bypass their cloud service and record locally.
      The dropcam will easily outstrip the cost of even an enterprise security camera system within a few years. If you install a security camera, how long do you expect to use it? (I have been running my system for close to 4 years, and I have no intension of stopping the use of it any time soon)
      For the user with the kind of money to get a dropcam or probably multiple dropcams, then pay for the overpriced service on top of that, they can easily get a high end 8+ channel DVR, some high end 1600x1200 cameras, and save money in the long run, while having more control, features, and cameras. and installation of a wired system is easy. (just need a screw driver attachment for a cordless drill, and also a half inch drill bit to make the hole, and pass the wire, then screw the mount in over the hole, and if needed, some compound to form a water tight seal around the mount.

    #soldierknowsbest Does this consume the broadband bandwidth if I'm not using the record function or when i'm not online to check the live view? cause we have a limited usage bandwidth and it would be over fast if the camera consumes it 24/7 at that resolution.

    Hello internet. This is the first time I am ever asking you for advice. So in light of the new consoles getting released, I'm thinking of upgrading. I keep on going back and forth between the xb1 and the ps4 but its just too hard. The ps4 is clearly the better console for gaming, specs wise, but the xb1 has the better exclusives. Also, I don't have cable so I have almost no use for the tv feature that microsoft included and sacrificed better gaming specs for. What makes my decision harder is that half my friends have the xb1 and the other half the ps4. So xb1 or ps4? Do I want to sacrifice an extra hundred bucks for something i won't use that much? Or do I want to sacrifice great exclusives like Halo and Titanfall for the better gaming console? And I only have enough money saved for one. So if anyone could help me, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

    Forgot to also add, the dropcam streams all of it's footage to the dropcam server at all times, whether you are using it or not, so it will constantly be pulling 600-800kbit/s 24/7 and can upload close to 60GB per month, so if your ISP offers crappy uploads, then this can saturate it and cause issues, and if they have bandwidth caps, then this can also cause issues for you.
    On a side note, for good measure about relying on the cloud, here is an example of a business decision. usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/12/09/21841229-major-ambulance-service-shuts-down-without-notice-in-six-states?lite
    Now that is a direct service where you pay, and use it once, but imagine if dropcam decided to do the same? what would you do with your $200 camera?

    "Razor" has the best comment here, no one thought of these things but he brought them to light. It needs more work for the price, I rather pay for a "GoPro" and upload to anything I want, not just the companies servers.

    Or get a camera that will record locally via a DVR, and get weeks or months of recording for free after an initial expense, and never have to worry about your investment becoming a paperweight the second the company goes out of business, decides to change business and drop the product, or simply decided to price gouge even more and force users to have to decide between willingly turning the item into a paper weight, or be price gouged further.
    Overall while the camera has useful features, it has an unnecessary requirement of cloud usage, where the company actually put a great deal of effort into making sure that you could not mod it or access the video stream locally, and if it does not connect to the cloud service, then it does not attempt to capture any video.
    When you buy a product like this, you are taking a gamble on whether they drop support or go out of business, or screw you in some other way, before you have decided that you are done with using that camera.
    A friend of mine has a security camera system by a company that is no longer in business, the camera system still works fine, and the remote access functions, still work fine. This is because it used direct connections via the WAN IP, so all of the advertised functions worked independently if the companies servers, and if the user wanted to record remotely, then they can pay for remote recording, or set up a server at a remote location, then have it DVR the stream.
    My current system is made by a company that is still in business, but if they go out of business, my device will still be fully functional.
