- My review of the Dropcam Pro from Nest is here. Is this product a sad statement about the stagnation in the home monitoring market, or does it have the capabilities to justify its high price tag?

I recently installed a security system by samsung at my brother's new business store front. While its not wireless, its definitely high quality video, plenty of features, and didn't break the bank. I feel like these "wireless" security camera's can't compete and will always feel like overpriced baby monitors until, like you mentioned, come up with a game changer that wont cost your child's pinky toe to use.
I just don't think wireless will be good until the 'standard' of wireless routers and networks improve greatly
And they look completely stupid,
Can not go wrong with a good quality dvr and wired HD cameras.
3:15 How many tabs do you need?
LOL, I caught that too.
And it's only one browser window. If I remember correctly Linus's workflow consists of multiple browser windows with hundreds of tabs in each of them.
He recently complained that 4GB of RAM is not enough for his browsing needs and that he will change his favourite dell laptop.
ALL the tabs!
Wow his brain must have multithreading to be able to remember what he has in every tab!
I usually run far more!
...Although, I only have 38 tabs open at the time of writing this.
Ironically it seems that the Dropcam is what's going to rob you in the end.
My Foscam FI9821W was the same price and it has remote controlled pan tilt, night vision, audio recording and speaker functionality and recording to a local or remote NAS or a FTP server.
This. Would Linus review a Foscam camera to compare with Dropcam?
Jean-Francois Chevrette His name is Linus.. Linux is an OS
Henry Griffiths woa sorry about that I guess being a sysadmin I get to type 'Linux' a lot and made the typo here :) Thanks for pointing that out!
***** no it an os
***** no linux is a person
So you are streaming your living room directly to google? Not very convincing
SO MANY TABS
SAVE YOUR FUCKING PASSWORD
That's normal. It's only frustrating when you can't see the logos anymore
Asamori Craft Get an ultra-wide monitor (21:9) and you can have 33% more tabs with logos :)
***** Or use a triple-monitor setup like me... :D
Michael Even with triple-monitor setup you usually have browser window on only 1 monitor. I guess it would look kind of weird having one browser window stretched across 3 monitors ...
I built a security camera network for our business, it wasn't hard and it had the same features you wanted. Price was similar and I was keeping all the video on a hard drive, being able to go 2 months back in time.
I have it, it doesn't work perfectly, it doesn't even work great but I'm glad I have it and $10 is not a lot to spend per month. If you know of anything that works better, then please let me know.
I think the price is right as long you take advantage of all the features. This is perfect for me to watch my dog when I'm not home and security. People tend to assume everything is too expensive but lets be real, its either too expensive or you're too poor. no offense
USB Powered cams is what I'm looking for. It helps if you're travelling to places where there are power issues. You can always connect it to a portable power supply which can be charged and continue powering if there is a power cut by utility companies.
Linus, thanks for this. I gotta say I agree with you. As a Newegg Eggxpert partner I've been given numerous Network Web Cams to review from Netgear, Belkin, TP-Link and others and your first comments had me shacking my head in approval. They were all, mostly horrible. The D-Link (DSC2132) refused to connect to my Buffalo Air Extreme router regardless of configuration. When I did get it working with my default AT&T router the video quality was sub par, the setup was painful & the "Movement Alerts" blew up my inbox with so many notifications that I just had to turn the units most potentially useful feature completely off. Belkin? Took me days to find out out how to even make an account to log in, as they don't tell you in the instructions! Seriously? Who overlooked this? Lets give the customer an app that immediately asks for them to log in but doesn't give them a single clue as to how to create an account to begin with! The list goes on and on. Just saying... I agree. If a company were to do everything you listed & not charge an arm and a leg for it they'd own the market. Period. Regarding your question of if you were unreasonable. No, I completely agree. It's to expensive and them trying to nickle and dime the consumer for cloud storage is rather sad. Thanks for the review.
for the drop cam you can download OBS and use the monitor capture and select the screen region of the window and record it, i did a 12 hour live stream and it came out to be 8 gigs so you can record for a long time and have somewhat small files
You are right on the money about these cameras, I volunteer on nights and I can't see my way to purchasing a home monitoring system that is only available as a subscription service. All of these systems fail for a variety of reasons
They require a subscription
The recording function goes into that great open pit called the cloud (sorry NSA data warehouse)
The features that you really want are only ever available on the highest end model and like cable and satellite tv you must buy the useless crap to get to the good features
Great video keep bringing them they really are helpful and appreciated.
It's nice to see that Linus is no stranger to having a ton of tabs open at once and it's not just me...
Your reviews are awesome Linus. Perfect blend of honest feedback and un-biased product feature rundowns. Nice work!
As you have mentioned in the video, there should options to record the video to a local device / network. Uploading video to an online server is such a bottleneck on the network. The setup seems to be fast and you can monitor it from different devices. And yeah when we are paying close to 200 bucks, we expect to get a much better product!!
I have to agree with you. About a year ago I started looking into getting some home monitoring equipment. What I found was very expensive with very few features. I ended up just deciding not to buy anything.
DEM TABS THOUGH! :D Linus Loves His Tabs!
Linus, I love how straight-forward and truthful you are in all of your reviews and unboxings. I agree with you about it being too expensive! You're doing a great job giving your opinion. (:
Are you guys considering revisiting smart security cameras in the near future? I see a lot of new offerings for 2018, but I’m not sure about the reliability of all of them!
I always love watching till the end just to hear that awesome outro music.
I always appreciate the honesty of your reviews
I actually was going to invest in this product till I hear more and more negative things about it.......Linus what would you recommend for someone who has a vacation house (45min away) from my primary dwelling, I like to have something like this but that can actually pan around the room, notify me when there is movement, and of course that gives me clear video while I'm watching.........And of course that has one set fee, don't feel like having to pay for every little extra thing....
Come on Linus.... When are you going to update the firmware of that iPad
I'm glad the ads are mostly at the end because I already have the JAS Mini, an intel SSD, and hulu +.
Is there a camera on the market that records and you can view on your phone that you don’t have to pay a monthly subscription for?😊
?
well thanks, I saw this inside Target for $199.99 thanks for this video for sharing some tips. I didn't know there's $10 monthly for this or more. Hopefully in future will make changes of down price.
For 1000$ we set up a security system in our house with 4, weather proof cameras, which also has excellent night vision, it's included with a DVR with 2tb, enough for around 5 weeks of footage, and with simple setup, for free, I was able to live monitor, and review the past week as long as there is internet access on both ends, anywhere in the world.
P.s the installation and a monitoring tv are also included with the price.
Honestly, I would seriously consider something like this, however; you're completely right about the lack of local storage. Subscription is terrible, especially if they stop supporting the product. There are local home camera sets that allow you to add your own storage. Granted that you can't view it remotely.
I would be fine with them offering something like a streaming subscription. You're able to see the activity triggers, and get alerts, but you aren't able to view the cameras remotely, unless you pay. Yeah, they need income in order to keep the streaming service up, but leaving out the ability for you to manage your own video with your own storage is terrible. I honestly think people should be taking the BitTorrent Sync approach, more.
In regards to do it yourself security and stream monitoring systems what do you feel is the most reliable one?
Agreed. Dropcam (or any of the other camera makers in this space), should make a version that can be used without connecting to the cloud. The only solution I have found is a completely jenky workaround using another device and crappy video outs.
I have pretty much the same experience as you Linus. The problem with this particular Dropcam is the fact that it gets pretty useless if you are not willing to spend a - in my opinion - whole bunch of monthly fees. For that reason I'm going with FOSCAM'S as they have a open API and a lot of functionality. I'm saving the footage to my home server and backing it up to an amazon s3 bucket (cloud storage).
You are completely right Linus. One of the things I hate most are products like this. I coined the term "paying for a product you already own" for this exact purpose. On a side note: SAO 2 is out?!
Thank you for your honest reporting.
I really wish it had some local storage option in case my router crashes or a local WiFi storage option on my computer in case my Internet stops working. Dropcam recently launched an API for developpers, but I doubt Dropcam would allow such feature. Also, the sensor is 1080p, but only streams at 720p.
I have never seen advertisement like this before....isn't UA-cam ads beneficial enough? ads within ads within ads>? Good work though, I have to admit. which is why I have already SUBB'D!
I don't know about US and Canada, but here in France not a lot a people can upload constant 720p video to the cloud without impacting severely their network. So not being able to store the stream locally is a big problem.
The CVR price should only be around $19.99 a year if that. Google owns Nest so the CVR cost should be very little.
What should it be powered by if not USB
Wall outlet... (you know, like many other things such as printers, monitors..) Basically just the plug outlets with the little tips on the end. (they don't break)
thekingfallsdown USB is much better IMO. Can plug into a battery pack etc.
Joshua Farrow Should have both. At 200$ anyway.
thekingfallsdown True
thekingfallsdown
But there are USB to Outlet adapters that cost less then 5 dollars a piece. Pretty sure Linus wanted them to be powered in an encased Thorium reactor or un-obtainium. Or maybe even eco-friendly Unicorn farts like Apple products are.
Off Topic
Linus, why are you still using iOS 6? Only curious to know if that you either wanted it to be like that or forgot.
He's doing a temporary " iSwitched back" thing. He touched on it briefly either during one of the WAN show's or another video. I"m not sure what to think either.
I'm comparing it to ADT, not to other cameras. This was very useful.
LinusTechTips I would love to see you review the Piper. Has the same features as Dropcam but no monthly sub for cloud storage PLUS zwave automation, multiple sensors, siren, etc.
Do you even close tabs bro?
No, I like seeing you rip unreasonable products apart. Videos like these is what makes your opinion so highly respected.
Can you use dropcam without paying for subscription? I just want live stream to check on dogs when I'm not home. I don't need to save video.
Yeah the subscription is pretty dumb plus I have Comcast internet with a data cap so they would charge me more money there since each month I go over my 300GB data cap or get really close to it already. Therefore this product isn't for me.
get a new provider! Here in Nova Scotia (Canada) there are no bandwidth caps! Bandwidth is dirt cheap to ISPs and them charging you for going over a "cap" is criminal!
300GB cap? How do you survive?
TallahassZ Remington Yes, I am in Halifax and have Bell Fiber with 175 down and 30 up with no cap. Unfortunately, in NB and ON, Rogers still has a cap I think, unless they removed it recently. A couple years ago I was in Toronto and the people I was visiting only had 60GB a month or maybe less... but Rogers is crap and their cell phone service is also crap lol
TallahassZ Remington
wish we Americans could switch providers... but nope. Monopolies. Monopolies as far as the eye can see.
Kyle Morton I'm in Hali as well - I have FibreOP. Eastlink is the reason Bell doesn't have a bandwidth cap - because they don't have one... I know b/c I used to work for Eastlink as a PM designing data circuits for them.
Pretty much all reviews I have seen are positive but price is just a massive issue. I calculated the cost over 5 years for 3 cams with 7-day cloud recording and its a whopping $1582 - so yes it is in my opinion TOO PRICY!
Oh and one more complaint - the product is only sold in the US directly and Canada through partners. I live in Scandinavia...
Linus have you reviewed Ubiquiti cameras? I would like to hear your take on them.
Wow, Linus this was very helpful, I agree that paying high prices to get the benefits that should have already come with the camera, is the wrong way to go.
I was impressed with this right up until you said "subscription"
If your going to spend that amount of money you might as well get a dedicated system
I would like to manage my own data pls, also agree with Linus on the cost. Possibly add some text messaging or alert functionality to let you know if something moved.
Some people may prefer offsite or cloud storage so it's nice to have it as an option. Not the only option.
7:46 that FULL HD spittle
2:56 holy tabs batman, thats the most amount of tabs ive ever seen opened on a video from linus and that is saying something.
I was turned off immediately that setup required turning ON 3rd-party cookies, just to get the camera set up. Then I had to connect it to a Google account. Then I had to go through several levels of signatures and permissions -- I simply want to see if it would be a useful piece of hardware for a webcam to do Zoom/meetings at home. (I recognize it's expensive; I got it from a junk bin but it works.) Would like to know if I can set this up on a Windows 10 system for the purposes described WITHOUT the whole NEST Account baloney.
I almost bough the dropcam a few months ago. The price and bandwidth was an issue. But in the world we live in, it might be worth the cost. I just wish Dropcam had an Xbox One app and use my kinect instead of their camera.
Interresting review. Would be great to have a comparison with the new Welcome from Netatmo.
It's way too much, wifi can be jammed and what no battery in cam to keep it alive during a power outage. You're right there should be better security offerings. Makes me think I should commercialize my custom data center monitoring software. Actually caught multiple times a female creep in high end SUV jamming local wiFi. Though my 320 res cams did not get readable plate. Crowd fund maybe?
Wonderful review
Hi, thanks your review was very helpful, the whole package is to exoensive for what delivers in my opinion the monthly service is crazy expensive
You are being completely rasonable with your review Linus
I think the same
Ya it's too expensive IMO whatever. Is gun gale online out now? Or sao season 2? Don't know what it's officially called.
Great video. You definitely know what you're doing. Keep it up.
I still think those home security systems, that detect any movements in your house and alert you when there is someone moving inside, when power goes down and even when roberes try to turn it off. The only downside to that system is that you can't have a dog or a cat since it would make the alrm go off
For
Awesome review, you gave me some very important information and saved me a lot of unnecessary spending.
Thanks.
well what about setting up the server to screen capture the monitor while leaving the cvr on? it wouldn't be a bad idea considering linus server
You are correct. On site hard drive storage would be a much better option.
You're justified in being upset with the subscription. I'm still really excited about the category though.
The subscription price would be acceptable in my mind if they gave the consumer the ability to store the footage locally and still utilize it's features. Some non-techy people might be willing to pay the premium to just not have to worry about it. For me as an IT guy it makes no sense to go that route
I got for 40$ a camera with day AND NIGHT recording (plus movement sensor! + okay ish audio)
it has a SD card built in... can use wifi... and looks better lol.
Wouldn't use that one for as much as a door stopper.
Oh an their upload service was cheaper
It`s got an comfortable for people in terms of installment, but in competitve ways to the market of security market no matter what solution like IP or Landline application, it`s bit expensive. Use of this tool seems to be limited to inhouse application and angles of view doesn`t really cover the whole place as this product seems to provide only the view its position front.
Nope, I'm with you: If the camera could save to network disk with a reasonable retention period without a subscription it would be worth the $200. Then, if you wanted to add cloud functionality like 14 day review/scrubbing with limited long-term retention (like 1-3 years) THAT would be worth a monthly fee. Anyone with a NDA against anything going to the web (like employees that work from home, like myself) would not be able to use this since it's cloud-only.
love your vids linus ,keep it up!!!!!
Was that Slick stealing shit at 3:45? LET'S GET HIM!
Great video / warning about CVR. Thanks Linus!
Or just buy bunch of USB webcams, $10 PC from garage sale, Security Monitor Pro from DeskShare (I highly recommend that one) or iSpy software and some hard drives. You have just got your own surveillance set. Also, file server at your grandparent's house would do as a great backup and server in case they just destroy the primary PC. Thank me later.
Linus referencing SAO?... Good man, take my like!
UniFi has a series of cameras their new lineup in particular looks good especially now that they finally added IR LED support. I also use their WiFi APs and they also work very well.
The dropcam is beyond highly overpriced especially with ongoing subscription requirements.
I love your videos. It's helping me (the dinosaur mom) finally understand what the youngling (not yet teenaged son) is talking about when he tries to explain why he wants what he wants when he wants some new product for his computer build. Guess why I made him find a job for the summer $$$.
Have you checked out the VSTARCAM T7838WIP ?
That's a camera you should review
I feel like a good portion of this audience would just by the cheapest one of these that still has decent image/audio quality, clear all of the software it comes with, and either write their own software or find someone else's online.
Love your vids man keep it up
3:26 HIGHLANDER shirt, 4:09 8-bit Tshirt. 2 shirts, 8 - 2 = 6. Add 2 more 6s and u get 666. illuminate confirmed.
review the new WD hardrives. are they really as fast as they say they are?
I'm looking for a dropcam to purchase for a hidden spy camera clock that I want to buy where you can uninstall the dropcam ip camera, and store it into the clock.
Doesn't Hulu Plus still have the ads though?
Why is there no option to save the footage on local storage?
because reasons. most likely money
Why not have a small $150 windows laptop with the browser open and a screen recorder recording the browser and saving the footage to a HDD?
The camera is too expensive, the cost of the cloud thing is reasonable if they would make the camera cheaper. However it'd have been great if they let you save footage to a disk. Also knowing Google now owns Nest and how there was talk about ads displaying on the thermostats, what are the plans of Google on this...?
i like your reviews
I don't think the price is unreasonable, but my connection can't handle constant 720p streaming, all day every day. The lack of support for using a home server is a deal breaker.
I have been liking the ip camera better. I'm not a fan of dropcam, thanks for this review in confirming this overprice hardware.
STOP ADVERTISING COOLER MASTER JAS MINI...
I wanted to buy them... but they are either sold out (especially the Espresso coloured one) or only available for absolute ridiculous prices (We're talking about three times the MSRP...) here...
:(
Wow, the linux show has really changed!
I think you are being very reasonable, the camera is well priced but those other add on costs are unreasonable.
haha perfect way to review a security camera monitoring the productivity of your employees
Does anyone know a cheaper alternative? I need something to get an eye on my dog from work :)
Ip cam (or all kinds of cams) + linux + zoneminder = great home monitoring
No pan+tilt, non weather resistant, saves to a cloud that requires a subscription which increases by $50 for each camera you add and has only 7 or 30 day option? even comcast gives better options than that for less.
